Honestly a lot of Linux users in the comments are missing the point of this advice, and I think ZTT is spot on. If you're going to switch to Linux full-time, you would already know you want to. If you're debating, definitely dual boot and try to get as much done from Linux, but don't ditch Windows unless you feel *really* comfortable with WINE/Proton and virtualization. I say this as a user who did just switch from Windows to NixOS of all things, which was quite painful and the only reason I even considered doing so is because I was already immersed in a lot of Linux development tooling through WSL, and I realized "hey wait. like most of my day-to-day tasks run in WSL why don't I just switch entirely". If you're in a similar situation where you're comfortable with Linux, then go ahead and switch entirely. Else, don't ditch your windows until you know you never want to see or touch it again.

Instead of dual booting, I recommend running a VM through something like VirtualBox to test out the UI. You will get a performance decrease due to virtualization, but this way you will have better control in case something bad happens

in that process rn, i use kubuntu unless i know for a fact that i have no choice but to use windows to get something done. though in recent times compared to when I first tried it, there are so many more useful apps on linux operating systems than before so I barely touch windows now ESPECIALLY with learning about steams proton.

Actually, if you want reliability and stablility for most programs, it is windows sorry to burst your bubble, but even my dad who hates windows knows that Linux has screwed him completely over from its updates by removing all his stored files off the pc. In fact that is an issue that hasn't existed as an issue for windows for decades. And yes most would consider windows a lot more stable than Linux i can't get Linux to function correctly for me, i can navigate windows easily but Linux has always been a pain.
@aaronpalmer7425

@AlexandreDuarteDM i have less issues with 11 than I had with early windows 10 which would crash multiple times a month, an issue was one of the first to use windows 11, so you sure it's the OS or the hardware? Ram issues will crash a computer giving you blue screen, cpu issues will cause same issues, and just because it's new doesn't make it good, I went through 3 sets of ram before my pc was stable it is especially common for new standards of hardware, ddr4 ram was stable but it's early year it was horrible, same with ddr5 and ddr3, early years are the roughest years for new standards.

For example in Linux there is a lot less software that you may be already used to like Adobe products, Microsoft office PowerPoint and so on. So you will need to use some alternatives such as the Libre office. Also, gaming on Linux is pretty much dead and nonexistent.

You don't need a separate SSD. You can dual boot from the same SSD that you have Windows in. You just need to repartition it, and you don't even need to reinstall Windows. Just shrink the existing partition (or partitions). Sure, I'd recommend that you backup your important data before doing this, but you DON'T need a separate SSD just for Linux.

Or you could boot Linux and run Windows in a virtual machine. The VM is easy to backup and restore to a functional state, i.e. before the last update. And you coud have as many different versions of Windows as you want: 3.11, 98, XP, 7. Interesting concept: opening a window to Windows! You can also launch, and experiment with, additional Linux distros in VM's, as well.

Linux has updates all the time as well. I have Lubuntu and Xubuntu and Mint running on various machines but I keep my main machine on Windows because that's what most of my clients have.

You can mess up Linux very easy if you are a bit careless. So e years ago I messed up an Ubuntu installation by trying to install KDE, and an issue with the drivers simply didn't allow me to repair it. At that moment didn't have the time/patience to deal with everything by following tutorials, so, I simply went with reformatting. FOSS OS are cool, but definitely not for everyone.

It is as easy if not easier to keep a linux installation updated and maintained (and not messing it up) than keeping a windows11 maintained. And: if you don't run win11 on a daily basis, and inly boot it every now and then, it will nearly all the time greet you with an update So if 2 OSs, you can even go 2x Linux

If, and really mean IF you need windows, specially W11, do as little as possible in it. Game, or use that absolutely necessary program in it, but do the rest (particularly things that require login into banks, social media or anything personal) in Linux. Windows keeps getting crazy about taking all your info.

Even updating Linux using normal apt can mess it up. Happened to me a year ago on Debian with Nvidia graphics after receiving a kernel bugfix update, and now it had a login loop cuz it said GPL licence incompatibility. I replaced the Nvidia driver with Nouveau and it worked. But literally last night my PC (same system) auto-logged off saying Neuveau failed to idle channel 0. I went to log on and continue my work and still idk why it logged off. Either way yes Linux, even the ol reliable Debian, is sometimes unreliable. And just maybe you should stick with Windows if it's something mega important.
