Honestly a lot of Linux users in the comments are missing the point of this advice, and I think ZTT is spot on. If you're going to switch to Linux full-time, you would already know you want to. If you're debating, definitely dual boot and try to get as much done from Linux, but don't ditch Windows unless you feel *really* comfortable with WINE/Proton and virtualization. I say this as a user who did just switch from Windows to NixOS of all things, which was quite painful and the only reason I even considered doing so is because I was already immersed in a lot of Linux development tooling through WSL, and I realized "hey wait. like most of my day-to-day tasks run in WSL why don't I just switch entirely". If you're in a similar situation where you're comfortable with Linux, then go ahead and switch entirely. Else, don't ditch your windows until you know you never want to see or touch it again.
@ivarhaugseth79732 ай бұрын
Instead of dual booting, I recommend running a VM through something like VirtualBox to test out the UI. You will get a performance decrease due to virtualization, but this way you will have better control in case something bad happens

Can you do a pc with a $ 1000 budget?
@ricardobino74103 ай бұрын
If, and really mean IF you need windows, specially W11, do as little as possible in it. Game, or use that absolutely necessary program in it, but do the rest (particularly things that require login into banks, social media or anything personal) in Linux. Windows keeps getting crazy about taking all your info.

Duel boot is the way, the only time i use windows is to play a few select games and vr stuff. i now use Linux to play Steam, Epic, Prime, and Gog games no issues so far. I am also able to run discord aswell. Just got to tackle the linux vr ....

My guess is that Linux VR could be a thing in 2025. But that isn't an educated guess because you can't never know with the Linux community (See Asahi Linux).

Even updating Linux using normal apt can mess it up. Happened to me a year ago on Debian with Nvidia graphics after receiving a kernel bugfix update, and now it had a login loop cuz it said GPL licence incompatibility. I replaced the Nvidia driver with Nouveau and it worked. But literally last night my PC (same system) auto-logged off saying Neuveau failed to idle channel 0. I went to log on and continue my work and still idk why it logged off. Either way yes Linux, even the ol reliable Debian, is sometimes unreliable. And just maybe you should stick with Windows if it's something mega important.

I don't have a spare SSD SATA or NVMe, but I do have a SATA HDD. I don't think I'll need a lot of speed for Arch Linux since I'll be experimental with it, so I hope HDD is fine.

“You can definitely screw up your linux if you don’t know what you are doing” I once managed to accidentally format the BOOT DRIVE and it actually proceeded with erasing itself and when I tried to reinstall linux it was actually formatted. The OS actually ran off memory for quite a few seconds but when I openend file manager to eject my “windows formatted usb” it crashed

Wouldn't Windows recall be able to take screenshots of your Linux VM? This is more of a privacy question.

If Linux had mass support for games I would have switched already. There’s a lot of stuff already on steam but it’s not quite there yet. Hopefully another few years
@bhargavjitbhuyan93943 ай бұрын
There is already. You don't need or want proprietary kernel software by an an untrustworthy company running in your kernel. In this case, kernel mode anti-cheat. Linux already supports a huge library of games thankx to steam and valve.

There's Proton, but still, if you want to play a multiplayer game that uses anti heat software, Linux is definitely not an option.

I have been over 10 years running Linux and the truth is that sometimes it just stops working (gpu drivers, battery drivers, sound and microphone stop working, boot stops working…) . If you use your computer for work, use windows or macOS. Use Linux for stuff that may not be super urgent

In installing linux please physically disconnect the windows ssd/hdd So that no bootloader overlap each other This comes with the problem/benefit of changing the OS through BIOS/UEFI screen

Is this a good upgrade for going from 1080p to 1440p Im going from a ryxen 5 4600 g and a rtx 3060 12 gb to a ryzen 5 5600x and a 6700xt

Is the rtx 4060 ti 8gb and the ryzen 7 5700x a good combo?
@IMthebiggestboy3 ай бұрын
Doesn’t bottleneck much, but there’s other things to consider. The 4060 ti has shit price to performance. Also, it depends what games you’re playing, and in what resolution.
