Summary of video: 1. Use 1 main target keyword that's clear and focused How to decide? -Use a keyword directly related to video content & title -Search for popular keywords surrounding your content by using KZbin. Enter the keyword in the search bar and analyze what shows up -Use free chrome extension Keywords Everywhere. You'll be able to search through the app to see the keywords ranking and suggestions, which will help when selecting your complimentary keywords 2. Put the keyword in all the right places. Make sure your primary keyword is in your title, tag, and description. Additionally tags should be complimentary to your primary tag. It should relate to your video as it'll help the Algorithm push it out more. How to find the complimentary keywords? 4 tips: -Alternative keywords that are logical and makes sense and is related to your video -Broad categories keywords. You may not be seen initially in the search as it's a broad term, but it gives more info to youtube to push your video -Your name and/or channel name. It helps more of your videos to get added to the viewers suggestions Common Mistakes 1. Using all sorts of keywords thats unrelated to your video 2.Using like tags like instagram hashtags aka way too broad 3. This is SO true! After I learned this I went back and fixed one of my older videos that I thought should have been doing better (I changed the title, tags, and description with much better and more targeted keywords) It worked!!! This is the most in depth video I have found. The others are detailed but to a different degree. They all say in vague ways that you need to add such and such, but dont go into detail about what are the best strategies like you did. Gonna try this and hope it works! Great advice Gillian, one thing though with hashtags, it appears KZbin is experimenting with hashtag usage- granted it is still different than Insta. But I find on some of my videos the hashtag is ranking. I follow you and others as I coach spiritual and healing folks who are just getting started on YT. They see my little niche channel on meditation and want something similar to get the word out. I love how clearly you explain rather arcane geeky topics. So important to understand this stuff. Also tags are key but the AI now scans the video so well that the tags seem to really boost in the early phase when not enough info on viewer responses ie. click away rate etc. view duration are there to tell it who your video is really for.

Great video Gillian. I’m a little late to this one! Refreshing to see a video on tags that isn’t primarily about vidIQ or TubeBuddy, or both. Clearly a lot of these other vids are focused on the affiliate marketing opportunities with those softwares, but nonetheless there are many of us that are now so indoctrinated into thinking that tags etc can’t be done without one of those softwares.

thank you for putting out an awesome video. I've decided to start a KZbin channel about personal mindset and development. But i've got a question I know that your supposed to be happy and energetic when you are doing a video, but would i want to start with my tragic backstory (i buried my mom, dad, grandad, brother, and uncle from age 9 to age 12) and tell the viewers what self limiting beliefs i created. I want to show them I could change my mindset after all that tragedy, then anyone can do it or should i start with what I've learned and down the road tell them that story.
