I have just discovered your channel and I am so glad. You explain everything so clearly. I am attempting to learn to make my own clothes, but I am terrified of my sewing machine 😨I also find Egyptian hieroglyphics slightly easier to read than patterns. I realise you have done a beginners sewing course so I will eagerly tuck in to that. Who knows, I might end up on friendly terms with said sewing machine!

I like to leave the loop uncut because when you separate your fabric layers and pull the thread apart that loop will stop you from pulling the threads out too far. Works well for me.
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course you can do that. Always handy to keep those layers together! :-))

Excellent video as ever Aneka, but I have to ask: what does "for carriers optional" refer to in the dart you're using?
@MadetoSew5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. It is for belt loops should you wish to attach them to this skirt. Hope that helps, they obviously sit over the dart but aren't really related to the dart itself. Aneka

+lisabanks100 Hi Lisa, really pleased I could help. As I mentioned in the tutorial I use carbon paper for a LOT of markings, but there are times when you can't use it and that's where the traditional tailor's tacks come in. Good luck with your sewing! Aneka x

When you make tailor tacks for darts, at what point do you remove the tailor tacks? Do you sew right thru them or simply use them to pin your dart together, then remove them and sew the dart? Also, when you tailor tack two layers of fabric, don't the tacks make it difficult to tell which side of the fabric is the top and which is the bottom because once you pull the two layers of fabric apart, the tacks show up on both sides of all layers of fabric.
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
Hello, it really depends on your sewing ability. But generally I would teach to leave the tailor's tack in and then remove it after sewing. I would try and keep it out of the way as much as possible when you are sewing, so that it doesn't get too caught up in the stitches. That is correct about the two layers of fabrics, the tailor's tacks won't help you work out which way is the top verses the bottom. I would place a pin in the seam allowance or use chalk to mark the right or wrong side. And I pretty much keep my 2 layers pinned together (by at least one pin), until they get sewn. Then you don't get confused. I hope this helps? Aneka
@jmoody33744 жыл бұрын
is it ok to mark darts with chalk or does it have to be done with tailors tacks ??
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
Yes it's fine to mark with chalk if it's showing up well on your fabric. Tailors tacks have benefits when the chalk doesn't show such as on a textured fabric like a boucle.

Hhmmm, the loop should not be cut. When the two layers are pulled apart, the uncut loop will prevent you from pulling the tacks completely out.
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
Yes of course you don't have to cut the loop until you want to take the tacks out. Thanks for sharing Teena.
@teenazless3 жыл бұрын
@@MadetoSew the loops prevent the thread from being pulled out when you separate the fabrics. The tails should be twice as long as the loop. At least that is what I learned in design school. I did have to watch several videos that showed how to do tailor tacks the classic way. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2ixl4mlfdV9hpY

@@teenazless Thanks for sharing. Being honest I am not sure I was taught to do Tailor's Tack's at my University (London College of FashIon). We would have been probably been told to use an awl instead, all in the name of speed of production! 😬 Nowadays I only really do them on fabrics that can't be marked with another method; such as bouclé. I don't think I always cut through the loop, as you are right it helps to keep the tacks in the fabric. It probably depends on the situation, and so much of these techniques you do in automatic mode. I have a funny feeling I was taught to cut through the loop when marking through paper (to prevent damaging the paper), of course we would use thick pattern drafting paper not thin dressmaking pattern paper. Anyway, I really appreciate that you shared this video as it will be good for others watching to see the difference. Thank you.

Nice video, but at 9:35 you say "using a SHARP pair of scissors" , why don't you use one?...it literally makes me cringe. Watching an instructional video where the tool is dull, and the instructor needs 3 takes to cut a few threads...
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
Oh dear! I used to film my videos in-between teaching classes at my studio, and would use the tools and equipment that I provided for my students. Unfortunately my lovely students didn't take as much care with the equipment as I did! As you can imagine were forever sharpening scissors. I am presuming that was the issue with this pair. I now keep my equipment separate for my personal use and filming so that I don't have issues where it doesn't work on camera. Very embarrassing. Thanks, Aneka

This is a tutorial for BEGINNERS, like myself, who need all the help we can get - so, surprising as it may seem to you, this actually includes talking, by way of explanations. Did you make the same requests of your school and college lecturers 🤔🤔🤔 mmmmmmm.
