How to Take a Blood Pressure Measurement Manually: Taking a manual blood pressure is a common skill performed by nurses, CNAs, medical assistants, doctors, and many other healthcare professionals, especially when taking vital signs or performing a head-to-toe assessment.
In addition, nursing students must often perform a skills check-off on how to take a manual blood pressure.
In this video, Nurse Sarah offers a quick tutorial on some of the key concepts you'll want to remember when taking a manual blood pressure. In addition, this video shows you how to read the gauge as you hear the systolic and diastolic sounds.
The systolic pressure is the first sound you'll hear as you observe the gauge. The diastolic pressure has historically been considered the last faint sound that you'd hear when taking a blood pressure. However, many newer guidelines suggest that the diastolic pressure should be the point at which the sound stops (no sound heard).
Always follow your school or facility's guidelines when obtaining a blood pressure.

Hello! I have a problem - I can not hear brachial pulse through stethoscope. Tried with both sides, with & without diaphragm, different angles, different pressure. Nothing. No other issues though.

I remember I had to check this ladies BP at the hospital. She was a 35 year old drunk. Fell on the sidewalk, big cut on her leg. I was pumping up the ball. She farted real loud. Sara whats your opinion on the automatic BP cuffs? I keep reading mix reviews

I was an RN at the Bozeman Hospital in Montana. Horrible hospital. Poorly run. I only spent 2 years there. Staff hated everybody. This was all before COVID. I was really disappointed in the nursing staff there.
