As an American who grew up on Chevys and all the typical brands after moving to Sweden I could understand why these red blocks in these old Volvos are for the people. The rich culture behind drifting in folk racers who use Volvos over here. It’s kind of like Sweden’s 350 it’s just super easy and reliable and you can throw alot at it

Absolutely one of the best 4 cylinder engines ever made. I started in 89 with Ford and left after a few years and went to Toyota and have stayed with Asian imports ever since but I owned a 92 240D that was absolutely mint . The redblock was simple, robust, and easy to service.

B23A was sold in 244GL in 1981, my father bought one new and it got directly into a hard life as I got my license at that time! 112hk, (not hp) made it much quicker than the 82hk in the previous 1975 B20A I learnt to drive in! ;)

check the gasket/o-rings for the oil pump pipe, its easy to change if you have the sump of and a good thing to check.. i did that on mine and the gasket was on the way of tearing.. miles from a engine rebuild!

Handy bearded man y'all found there! Currently debating weather to tear down and "refresh" the B230FT in our 940 Turbo Wagon project... have some oil blow by issues... and since Nick shows it's pretty simple, and probably wouldn't be THAT expensive... am I just making excuses? Can't wait to see how you like your new angry Volvo wagon!

@@ShiftingLanes Unfortunately we're Hot Rodders so any time an engine comes out for a "Refresh" it NEVER goes back together quickly/easily/cheaply! We COULD put it back together with stock stuff for x amount of money, BUT for a little bit MORE we could upgrade to.... And so on and so on until our reliable daily driver Volvo filming car/shop car becomes a fire breathing version of it's former self. We've made it ALMOST a year without any major modifications and for us, that's awesome! Very cool to see your process moving forward, looking forward to what you think of it when she's all done!

Found this informal like to see what changes are perfrred when building and why. After all, we all watch to learn right? Interested to see if a windage tray will be used or even needed and to what level of technical coverage will be filmed with specifications for performance.

I realize I am late to the prom here but I was given a 1985 Volvo 245 and I am going to restore it. Where do I find engine parts? its a diesel with low compression. The red block performance link didn't go anywhere. I am really excited for the project.

Nice work. I have a 1992 b230f with the distributor on the cam. For that side to side piston movement, what would you replace to reduce that motion? Can the big end bearings alone cause that?

Hi guys! Excellent video! What do you think about B200FT? Is it as good at tuning as the B230FT? The B200FT will definitely have stronger cylinder liners, but what about other things? I have the opportunity to buy a brand new 940 with this engine. Thanx.
@Stale_Mahoney
@Stale_Mahoney 2 жыл бұрын
well the cylinder linings is not a problem on these engines, the rods are the weak point when you start pushing boost into them.
@daw7563
@daw7563 4 жыл бұрын
Will you reduce the compression ratio? The turbo models had different pistons to achieve this. Also sodium cooled exhaust valves, but not really necessary if you ask me.

Definitely want to if you're interested in pushing bigger boost. If the block doesn't have squirters, the block can be drilled and tapped for them.

Yes, up to 5 times. He's replacing them because it's somebody else's money. On an engine like that, replacing anything besides gaskets and seals is a waste of resources.

only 152,000 according to the video. Car got totaled shortly after they serviced it. I have a 89 740 gl....same engine but with only 96,000. Just interesting to see the insides of it.
