I'm laughing a lot because the solution was so easy lmao. Just hold your phone farther from your face and zoom. Things look 10 times better. Also, zoom gets better base resolution than cropping. Thanks dude.

ngl I was already doing this, didn't know the reason, but I don't think I've ever taken a mirror selfie without zooming in
@deanolium15 күн бұрын
It's not really zoom but more picking the telefoto lens in the camera. Zooming within a specific lens is just cropping and stretching the image which makes it look worse. So using the mirror selfie, which is just the front facing camera, zooming is just going to reduce the resolution. For an iPhone it's a wide angle lens, so roughly 25mm focal length which is ugly as hell for faces. If you crop the image (which is what zooming does) then if you're about a quarter of the size of the image, then you'll get around 50mm focal length which is where it starts getting ok. But to get flattering images, you want around 85-100mm which is around 1/8th-1/16th of the size of the unzoomed-out image. As you can imagine the resolution is going to suck, and you'll get artefacts from the phone smoothing things out. So yeah, try and avoid using the front facing camera for flattering photos. Instead using a stick/remote timer and the rear cameras are going to give much better results, though obviously this will be much more fiddly to do.

I love how creative hobby’s have so much in common when it comes to execution. I am a music producer student and I would compare it like this: to get a good sound you need to know what microphone works for different instruments, the same as you need different lenses and cameras to capture different moments. After that comes the quality of the space around you, in music it’s about acoustics and how the sound bounces on the walls and objects, same as you need to think about lighting and I would assume other things as well.

I like the way you put it! Fortunately for a lot of us smartphones have gotten so good that they equalize people in terms of what they can shoot/film. Leaving the rest to the imagination, skill, and execution.

Digital zoom is theoretically better than cropping later. Due to computational photography, in theory, the phone is doing more work to make the zoomed in photo look good with what's in the previewer. As opposed to taking a base resolution photo and cropping later, the computational photography was optimized for the full shot, not for the zoomed in shot.

@pedrosegundo810928 күн бұрын
A 4 minute video is frustratingly long? Tik tok is destroying our brains, for real, talk about immediatism
@deanolium15 күн бұрын
The simple answer is: - Use the rear cameras, and try to use the longest/most zoomed in lens that you can - Avoid using digital zoom as that's just cropping the image and stretching which looks shit - Have as much light as possible - Set up the lights if you can, so you have one hitting your face from the front and to the side, so you get a slight bit of shadows on the other side of your face to keep it interesting. Another lower powered light straight on to highlight your eyes and keep the image from looking too severe, and ideally a light either behind you or above you to pop you out from the background. Play around with the lighting - If shooting outside, move around to see how the light hitting you looks different from the different angles - Have either an interesting background around you or a plain one. But make sure it doesn't take away from you. Photography is a huge art form and you need to experiment. But that main thing is to use the higher focal length lenses in your camera/phone and play around with the lighting.

I am Miss No photos. I am awkward as hell in pictures because I’m so dark skinned and I’m afraid I won’t show up in the pictures. So I have no pictures with my kids and I have no pictures with me having fun and a few pictures that I do have for me and my bathroom very comfortable situation. I know I’m a pretty person, I’d like to take pictures of myself so my kids can see me I remember me but me I’m ugly but pretty it’s odd. So when I’m in front of the camera I feel ugly first, I was afraid to Google how to take a selfie I thought that was weird but I’m so glad that I did , the advice she gave in the end of your video is so important for people like me to know. Some people are mean to me some people are nasty to me just because of the way that I look, but I do have the ability to make people smile and br

Thank you very much for the informative and motivational content. I had a lot of "by-proxy" issues with my image (i.e. family members literally praying me to remove pictures of myself from social networks as they were looking "awful and distorted" - btw they were just average-looking, un-photoshopped selfies) and after many years I am now starting to befriend the camera. It's not easy and on some days I just feel meh, but I realized three fundamental points: 1. I am prettier than I had been trained to think, 2. I don't have to be pretty 100% of the time, and 3. I have the exact same right to exist whether I am or not.

Nice. My Google Pixel 6 Pro has a separate 4x zoom lens which is about 100mm. It's a bit of a jump from 1x (24mm) and there's nothing in between unless you digitally zoom but I don't really like that (even though there's a 2x option, it's just using the 1x lens and zoomed in). I prefer 85mm lenses on mirrorless/DSLRs so I hope phone cameras would start adding that focal length in the future.

@@JonBear I just tried it and started to love myself again! 😉 Seriously, selfies look so much better with it. (Very) unfortunately, you can't use voice commands to tell the camera to take a picture using 4x optical zoom, though, and there is no shutter voice command like the Samsungs apparently have. So you can only use the timer and volume-key trigger to make this (remotely) convenient to use for selfies.

Depends on the phone, but a lot of phones downscale the output image, so zooming before taking the picture produces a clearer, higher res image than cropping in post. E.g. my phone has a 108 MP sensor, but outputs 12 MP images, so I get way more detail when I zoom in first.

Yes but at different degrees. Selfie cameras are generally wider than your back cameras so their distortion is more pronounced. The best thing you can do is to use your main len, punch into 2X and stand around 10-15 feet away from your phone.

This reminds me of the time when phones used to have 2 front cameras with different focal lengths. One for narrow shots and another for wide. I think phone manufacturers should go back to that. Instead of adding macro and wide lenses in the back, adding an extra lens in the front is what more users would prefer (I think).
