I feel like there's got to be something to do with our binocular vision that explains why we don't see distorted image of someone up close that you're missing. We aren't taking in the view from one perspective, we see two combined. So as someone gets closer, the distance between our eyes allows us to see some of the left and right side of their face that a single focal point in the middle would miss, as it can't see that far around the curve of the face as our two spaced apart eyes.

That's how I got my profile picture, by using gestures to snap pics at a distance on a three second timer.

Sorta related: I have always been so frustrated when taking landscape photos, only for the shot to look way less impressive than what appears with the naked eye - like the vertical FOV is stretched, squishing the scene down and destroying the height information. Sounds like a similar problem, sans the distance between the camera and the subject.

It's very interesting to know that the width of our eyesight is close to 22mm but the distortion is that of 50mm, I didn't know that but it matches up. I always thought that this was the case because we have two eyes and both look at 50mm, but since we have two, we have double the peripheral vision stitched into one by our brains! It's interesting to know our brain does a lot of heavy lifting for our vision :),

Ow so how it really works for someone who looks handsome and gorgeous in real life. When they take selfies, they go like 30% uglier in their selfies but still look good. My self-esteem has been completely ruined by selfies, if I’m being honest. Idk how to get it it back. I'm scared of all types of cameras and I don’t know what I'd do with myself if I got my picture taken by a professional photographer and still looked ugly. I like what I see in the mirror, so it's frustrating when an otherwise okay face looks like a monstrosity on camera. Nothing I do ever fucking helps and I can't even update my profile picture on LinkedIn due to this irrational fear.
