If you're interested in taking better notes, this video will teach you. I'm a Harvard student that wants to help everyone grow: I want to help you take more effective notes so that you can absorb material faster.
My newsletter: goo.gl/31jEMe
If you want to learn how to take better notes, these are a few principles that I've developed over the years through high school and at Harvard that have helped me to retain more information earlier.

Heres what works for me: Bring a small Moleskine and a mechanical pencil. (the more boring the better) Write 50% of the time and draw mind-maps the other 50% of the time. After class, turn over the paper: write down the top 5 points from the lecture. Make sure you could explain those to your mom. Rinse and repeat.

Here’s what I do, 1. When you write a lot down, try remember it 2. Ask yourself questions about what you had just done 3. Explain what you have just done to an imaginary person next to you 4. Highlight useful notes and go over your notes every night because you will add more and more 5. If you are doing maths or physics, write down step by step how you got the answer 6. This is probably the most important, only focus on ONE thing at a time

What I struggle with the most is writing less. You say to take time to actually think what you're writing, and I should write down things I think is most important, but I feel so anxious bc i'm on a time crunch- the profs move on too quickly for me to actually understand what they're saying. That's why I result to cramming everything down. Also bc i'm not quite sure what the PROF thinks is important- it might be on multiple choice or something but I thought it wasn't a key point.
@somethingggggg

magda pietkiewicz Exactly what I’m struggling with. Also the other problem I seem to have is that, if I don’t write everything my teacher puts on the board/slide or write whatever she says, I don’t think I’d understand it later on, because I paraphrased it either wrongly or it’s too short to understand (especially in AP biology).

I feel the same ! I study International Relations and sometimes the professor goes too quickly for me to take the time to understand fully... I tried to take handwritten notes in the subjects where I was "weak" (history and law) and I didn't see a big improvement :/ I guess it depends on the subjects, the professor and the type of student we are :/

I've struggled in my Geology courses (I'm a geology undergrad student) couse we've got to memorize so much information some times in a very short period of time, for me, math classes are easier couse I can derive de proofs without remembering every step and info, but in geology the mechanics are different, at first mind maps helped me a lot to organize and rank hierarchicaly the info but I wasn't able to add extra info about every nodd couse the map would become a total mess, so then I've tried a mind map approach in document style format, in wich you assign indexes to every subject and subsubject (1.petrography ; 1.2 igneous petrography ; 1.2.1 igneous minerals, 1.2.2 igneous textures) and added an important remark just below with the most important notes or the nessessary info, this just helped me so much to visualize the information in a ranked way and map out all the info, my scores in tests skyrocketed

Something I do when having to remember specific terms, I usually try to make up my own definition for it and give an example, if I can. It shows that I can understand it and give real-world examples of it.

I mostly agree with you except for the type of writing equipment you use. I usually love my notes bright, and yes, i do also highlight/write the important point of my notes in bright colour, i even colour coded them, orange for definition, red for equation (maths). This has been sticking around with me for quite a few years. And i usually keep my notes neat too, so that before finals when i get back to them to revise, i can pay attention to reading and understand my own notes (i'm more fond of colours). My own tip: If some concepts are difficult to understand, i usually break them down to comics or diagrams, for example to understand different positions of investors and banks, i usually just draw a stickman and a house to represent them, then draw arrows with labels to state their relationship, it really helps a lot when you illustrate them.
@grizzlygoomba2505

I agree with you, I'm also a really visual learner and in many cases where I have to remember facts and sequences together, I make absurd mnumonics or doodles associated with it to engrave it into my memory. Understanding concepts itself can easily stay in my head when revisited and in this case the doodles/experiances in class or my visual thought of the concept the moment i learned it helps so much in retrieving the information and writing it down in my own words. This itself can tie along with the facts and sequences, which are usually subsections of concepts.

I think writing is more effective then using a laptop because the actual action of writing it down and paraphrasing it makes you remember better. Its a kinesthetic action, and kinesthetic actions are far more likelier to stick, whether you are aware of it or not. It engages more senses, and your brain is more active. Another reason is that you have to process the information you put down, and you have to understand it so that you know whats the most important ideas that you need to put down. When you are typing on a keyboard, its all to easy to just fall into autopilot. You just start idly pecking words onto a screen instead of physically and actively engaging with and understanding the information. If that makes any sense.

@noobiewatcherz9938
@noobiewatcherz9938 5 жыл бұрын
@@DVZM. Simple, if you are the type of person to copy down everything writing / typing , then you might as well type . Just try to think of ways that you can type "better". Something like instead of typing "Cranial Nerve 1 Olfactory is the nerve for smell" you type "1 Ol factory" and imagine for 1 second a factory (which obviously puts out gasses) . . You copy paste a picture of a factory to your word document AFTER class lecture. Also i've figured out that it's harder for me to read font Arial 12 on my computer so instead i use Times New Roman 11 for computer reading/typing But Times New Roman 11 is harder for me to read on PAPER, so i change highlight it all back to Arial 12 just for printing. Do you have any suggestions for me on how i can use my computer to study (everything school/ not school) better ?

One key point I feel most people overlook is the extrapolation of information before class. Take a moment to figure out the class based on the title/course material/proforma etc, make a few assumptions to build a note-taking framework; so that your note taking is more like filling in the gaps instead of just blind copying. If you walk into a class completely without priming your brain for it, it'll be hard to absorb the information.

Had an economics professor in undergrad that required us to write everything he said verbatim. One time he went as far as to stop the class and yell at us because we (as a class) were not writing enough, or fast enough, for his liking. At several points during the semester, he collected notebooks and graded us on how well we wrote down his lectures verbatim, on our note-taking. Guy was a nut job....

The most important thing is to think about what you write down. Try to rephrase it, that makes you need to understand it. To me having a flow of text with (nearly consistent) bullet points system instead a wall of text helps a lot aswell (also can't write sentences directly so rephrasing happens automatically).

This is tough! I haven't really dealt with this too much before. One thing that I've heard people doing before is reading the textbook sections relevant beforehand and making a note on that, so you're comfortable with the material, and then only taking notes where the professor is adding to your understanding in some way (new material, clearing up some misunderstanding, etc)
@gsracer9072

I've found that skimming the textbook beforehand can greatly increase compression even at a faster pace. If it is really out of hand perhaps consider using a voice recorder on your phone to record the lecture so that you can go back later if need be.

Really liking the videos! Personally, I've found that taking 2 sets of handwritten notes is the most beneficial. Usually, I like to take more in-depth notes outside of class using the book. Then, once I get in class, I have a background of what's going on. This way, the second set of notes is focused on making connections and developing a fuller understanding of the material.

*It's so true that taking notes means having to spend less time studying!* Huzzah! 🤩Also agree with taking notes however works best for YOU! 💻&/or✍= 🤓I'm an A student who prefers to focus on Listening, Understanding, and Notating during lectures instead of adding on multi-tasking functions like Evaluating priority and Analyzing. *Making a key points summary from memory as soon as possible AFTER the lecture* then reviewing notes to fill in anything I missed fulfills these functions in only a few minutes and helps me retain more of what was said. (Reviewing like this is a modified version of the Cornell method but I put the Summary at the end of my notes, and don't use a Cue column). Having a highlights summary also makes reviewing faster and easier. Taking copious notes (with either keyboard or pen) and using the speaker's wording works great for me : - ), and so does highlighting key points AFTER they're made using underlining, highlights, and/or arrows (because I'm not psychic). ; - D For brand-new or extra challenging subject matter, doing the reading *before* the lecture can help, and so can just skimming the text for headlines, graphics, and introductory and concluding paragraphs. Previewing highlights like these before reading the full text works in a similar way because things we already have a mental framework for are easier to encode into memory.🤓 Happy studying to all! 😃

"Put away the screens." People during online class: "Ah yes, the screens." On a more serious note, though: What this guy means is that you need to avoid _choosing_ your distractions. Go against your reflex of instinctively finding that youtube button, or browsing facebook, or reddit, or getting a smoke, or drink, etc.. If you resist it once, you can do it again, and again, and again, and so on _even though_ your brain is so against studying for some reason that it seeks _escape_ from the reality that _'you are a student, who is studying.'_ Because, even after becoming a professional, you're still a student of the world around you as you improve your crafts. In the end, it's a choice you eventually have to make, because reality will keep on putting your world of escape on trial and slowly break down the fog on your brain that you yourself help put up. You are your own best friend, and you gotta help yourself a little more.

Thank you so much for uploading this. I think I tend to take notes ineffectively and don't get the key points to what my professor would be teaching me. I do agree with putting away the screens, taking notes on pencil and paper is far more superior to typing it out on a computer no matter what your words per minute may be. I saw the advertisement for the new iPadPro and the part where a woman asks "What are you doing on your computer?" and the girl replies "What's a computer?" was pretty cringe worthy. Nonetheless, thank you for another great video. I would really like to purchase one of those growth books.

When I take math notes I have to write every step down. I have noticed that many of my peers do not take math notes, they only write the example problems that the teacher walks us through but If I do t have words to go back and look at I will get lost in the equation

While writing less is a good habit, I found for me what works best is concise main points with whatever I feel like as my sub points...typically being puns (*let the ADD flow*). Because I have to study a lot on my own, I agree 100% about screens being a distraction and they're definitely the biggest threat to academic performance to nearly everyone I meet including myself. Overall, I think this was super informative and summarized my own thoughts towards note taking, thanks! Sources: 99 ASVAB and 36 ACT.

You don’t need handwritten notes if you can find some organized material like a book or online tool or if you can record the lecture. In either case, if you have the choice between listening to someone talk about something complicated and looking at diagrams and reading headers and sections, I would think most people would choose the most expository resource.

Hey John, nice vid. Agree with most of the info in here; just wanted to add that it's also beneficial to rewrite notes after class. I've found that by doing this, I more often than not need to spend less time reviewing the material in the future.

But what about the color of pen you use ? In my country , students have been told that blue pan is the better choice bcos it increases your memorization. However does this has anything scientific ?

I take notes on an iPad, but I write them with a stylus on notability as opposed to typing them. When I initially take notes, they look like shit. So afterwards, it help to be able to just rearrange them to make them more organized, and this also allows me to further digest the information.
