50 seconds in, heard "tough as nails" .. sigh of relief im home. there isnt alot of GOOD aussie content on here. this is refreshing. i tossed up for ages what hedge to go with. ended up with red robin photinia for the speed and colour variation. but the leaf structure of japonica is something special. excellent vid cheers stewart

Just found your channel and enjoying watching! I am wondering if you have done an update on the boxwood cuttings progress? I would love to do this as I have just found a new passion- making everything I can get my hands on a topiary!

@@shortchanged. pretty sure they've got roots, been 2 months and they are still bright green and going strong, didn't have a single failure in the tray which I was surprised about. You started cuttings ?

Thanks Stewart AMAZING video. Loved the bucket greenhouse, do you need to pierce tiny holes in the top for oxygen? And how often to you need to water during that 5-6 week period?
@StewartDorman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke, glad you like the video. I've never bothered to put any holes in my mini greenhouse. They breathe fairly well and I have to lift it off the cuttings to water anyhow. As for watering it depends on the weather. If it's been warm I'll water daily (usually first thing in the morning) but if the weather cools it could be every two or three days.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge. I would like to know why my cuttings are wilting. Thank you.
@StewartDorman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eliezer, I'm going to take a guess that you're in the northern hemisphere and you're in mid-summer. If this is the case and you've taken your cuttings now then you're a bit early. It's best to wait until late summer or early autumn when the new growth is firmer and the weather is a little cooler. Hope this helps Cheers Stewart.

Hi mate propagated buxus cuttings 4 weeks ago keep in plastic container as makeshift greenhouse used rooting hormone 1 box has sand as medium 1 has potting mix and the other has Osmocote propagating mix and none of them even show any signs of throwing roots all still have their 3 leaves and seem healthy . Will they eventually root and if so how long I’m in Sydney nsw
@StewartDorman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joshua, It will take longer at this time of the year. As long as the cuttings still look healthy it's just a matter of patience. I usually wait until I see some sign of new growth, like swelling buds or new leaves. They will eventually strike roots but how long could be 6, 8, 10 or even 12 weeks. I don't remember what I said in the video but the best time to take cuttings is late summer, early autumn. Having said that I think I took this years cuttings about the same time as you. We'll just have to wait until they are ready.

Gday Stewart, Is rooting hormone compulsory? I just put 25 in without hormone and used un-sifted good quality potting mix. All 25 in one large pot.
@StewartDorman4 жыл бұрын
No, not strictly. You'll still get some to strike roots. Rooting hormone is used to improve your strike rate and help speed up root development. Sometimes people use honey and swear by it. Good luck with it. Cheers.

cheers mate... appreciate the prompt reply. Good video by the way. Thanks for the advice!

@@StewartDorman Hey Stewart, I put down 40 cuttings a month ago. 20 with hormone and 20 without. Not one has grown roots :(
@StewartDorman4 жыл бұрын
@@tanvirkhan8702 That's disappointing. I probably didn't explain this very well in the video but I just leave mine until I see some signs of new growth on most of the cuttings. They can take some time to strike roots.
