Very well explained and demonstrated. The information as to why your cuttings are planted to the perimeter of the pot answered a long held curiosity. Thank you very much.

Very good. My dahlia cuttings developed Leafy Gall this year, which was unfortunate, but it won't stop me going again next spring.

Thanks Sahra for this update. Have earlier studied Dave's very good documenteries, trying under Scandinavian conditions keeping up in productivity with him. Very happy as I now see two ways of taking cuttings, both with their advantages. With pleasure I will also study your other videos....there is much that can be picked up!

Good clear instructions, well done. Just a couple of things, too much back of your hand you need to be behind what you are doing, also an in focus close up to show how much tuber is on the cutting would help. My question is, can cuttings be taken at any time of the year and can they be taken with out the sliver of tuber?

This is probably a dumb question but here it goes..i planted a dahlia tuber earlier this year in a pot outside (because I wasn't sure where I was going to plant it and wanted it to go ahead and start growing).. Well I waited much too long to put it in the ground and it had overgrown the pot (not enough room for roots so it got too tall and unsturdy). It's been in the ground for close to a month but I noticed yesterday that the tallest shoot had broken and hanging down so I cut it off and put it in water. Is there any way to root this piece?

I saw a video of "Swan Island dahlias" According to them if you don't take too many cuttings you can plant the tuber as you regularly would. I'm a bit confused though. I don't recall the Swan Island video saying anything about taking a bit of the tuber when taking the cuttings. Ill have to see it again to make sure

How do you get them from the pot into the ground once they're established, or do you just put the whole works in the ground? I find when I try to get them out of a pot they tend to fall completely apart to the bare roots.

Pale yellowish leaves would sugges the are lacking in nutrients, especially nitrogen. Maybe you could pot them on or give a feed like miracle gro as an idea.

Very interesting and learnful video. However, have a question: in a previous viseo, you showed that the bulbed must be below the soil when planting. In this video, there are all lying on top of. I can appreciate the reason in view of cutting, but how so they get to grow when they are just lying 'on top of' ? You'll have to excuse my ignorance :-). Sometimes it is bliss. Best regards, IDymph

Dahlias got tubers - not bulbs. The tubers are partly buried in compost/soil. Once it is in contact with soil and moisture (with the right lighting and temperature conditions) it will start to sprout. This method is purposely just to take cuttings from the tuber. You don't let the sprouts mature to a full plant. You cut the sprouts when they have like 3-4 set of leaves and root them on their own. The tuber may produce more or less 10 sprouts, so you get about 10 plants from one tuber if your successful in rooting them. After that the tuber is no good as it already served its purpose or it is exhausted of its energy so you dispose it. Your rooted cuttings will grow to a full plant and will produce their own set of tubers. This method is good if you want as many plants from a single tuber, but you have to start early in the season and usually ideal if you have a green house or the like. The other video, she was showing how to plant the tubers directly to sprout into a full plant without taking any cuttings. In order for the sprout to grow into a lush full plant, the tuber must be planted below the soil about 4-6 inches deep. If it's the right time you can plant the tuber directly on the ground or your garden bed. Some like to start early by planting them in small pots indoors as long as they have enough heat and light, then transfer them to the garden beds or bigger pots. As the plant matures, it will produce new tubers under the soil for you to harvest at the end of the season. Hope this helps you a bit.
