Great video. I grew over 50 plants from seed last year. I planted about half on them in the garden, the others were left in the 3 inch pots i pricked them out into, and amazingly they survived the winter and now really shooting growing up and out! Happy gardening 🙂

That's great! I bet you are very happy that they have survived. They are amazing plants and so good for wildlife. Tha ks for watching and Happy Gardening too 😀

Just in from aching work on plant pots. One 'bonariensis' overgrowing the path, afraid I'll lose it. First video this calm, reassurance that I can chop lumps off it and grow more. Can't thank you enough!

You're welcome, we had one last year that decided to grow in the path too and I tried to remove it but broke the stem. I put it into water and it grew into another plant and the one in path regrew too!

Thanks for this concise and informative video! I grew Verbena bonariensis for the first time this year but had no luck with growing from seeds so will try the cutting methods.

You're very welcome, glad you found it useful. They are so easy to propagate from cuttings so you won't have any problems making more plants. Thanks for watching.

This was a great video. Thank you! As a relatively new gardener who usually just buys plants at the nursery, I have two questions about the process of cultivating by cuttings. What do I do with the cuttings once they are put in the soil and in the water ? Where do we put them - inside or outside? At what point do I plant the in the garden? Many thanks.
@MadAboutGardening2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! The cuttings will root quicker in a warm place out of direct sunlight. On a windowsill inside or in a greenhouse is ideal. When they have rooted, pot them up into their own pots and when they have filled that container, they can be planted out. Hope this helps. Good luck with your cuttings 👍

I find this self seeds all over my garden and I've got it in several places now. Like you, I thought that the winter we've had would've finished it off but it's come through as usual. I'll have to look out for that shorter variety. Hasn't it been nice to have some consecutive dry days? I can' be doing with this one day here and one day there lark. I've just bought some lovely Petunias from our local Co Op. They look really healthy and well cared for. It does my head in when I see plants in supermarkets that haven't been watered but knowing how busy the staff are, plants outside are probably the last thing on their minds. xxx

It must be great to have such a lovely plant self seeding around your garden. Purple Elegance is a nice one, identical to the species but not as tall. It’s been such a treat to have a number of nice days in a row. I was beginning to think it would never change! At least the garden has had time to dry out - in fact perhaps too much as now we have to water all the pots! I hate to see plants not being cared for, you would think they would take better care of them if they are trying to sell them. It’s nice when you can go to the shop and come back with plants. Take care xxx

How should you care for the cuttings over winter? In a cold frame?
@MadAboutGardening16 күн бұрын
As Verbena is one of those perennials that isn't bone hardy, best to overwinter them in a cold frame to be sure they survive. Plant them out next spring. Thanks for watching.

I love this plant, but sadly in Kentucky we have treat verbena bonariensis as an annual plant. It's hardly in US growing zones 7-11. Sadly, I'm in zone 6B. Even in a sheltered spot covered in dead leaves it does not make it through our winters. My local nursery does sell this plant and I grew a couple of plants last year. I might try taking some cuttings off one plant I buy this year to see if I can multiply my numbers. Thanks for the idea, James

That's a shame James, it's a bit like that where we live if we get a very cold winter. Could you take some cuttings and put them in pots somewhere inside? We use the summer house but it's hit and miss with how cold it gets in there. Thanks for watching, take care 🙂

@@MadAboutGardening I might try and take a few cuttings this fall to see if I can root and overwinter some in the house this year. The plants are a bit pricy at US $8.00 per plant. I wish I did have a greenhouse. It's on the bucket wish list LOL.

@user-zt6qh3mx7v Good plan James 👌 You'll save a load of money growing your own each year at those prices. A greenhouse would be lovely 😍, I've always wanted a greenhouse too 😁

Nice, same way as I do my Salvia Rockin' cuttings, Just bought a Verbena 'Enchantment Red' last week, thank you 😀👍

You're very welcome Richy. Us too with the Salvia cuttings. Nice Verbena variety, we used to use a lot of the bedding types in clients' containers as they just keep on flowering all summer. Hope you're having a good day. 👍😀

@@MadAboutGardening Having quick coffee then back to potting up 😁If I get time late I might take 2 or 3 cuttings later. Mrs blackbird has decided to use my tub with old leaves and veggie scraps to lay 2 eggs and sit on it, not what I need 🤣Weather is cloud with bits of sun, perfect for repotting. Hope you're both having a great day too, thank you 😀👍P.S. I use gel rooting compound but my father likes using powder as you did here.

@@martianleaderrichy1520 It's been nice here but not as sunny as at the weekend. Would have been enjoying the garden if it wasn’t for work! That’s lovely to have provided the perfect place of the birds to nest. I didn’t know that you could get rooting gel, only ever used the powder. Hope you had a great afternoon 😀

@@MadAboutGardening Thank you, yes it got up to 21C and sunny, perfect, so perfect I went to the GC and got more plants 😎 Two of them were V. Showboat 'Blue Fizz' and V. Sb White. Hi guys. I took some verbena cuttings, plus some heuchera cuttings yesterday to give to my sister. Is it necessary to put the ziplock bag over them? She said she was going to just leave them on her decking outside and then to her polytunnel when the weather gets colder. Would that be ok? (based in south east Ireland) Thanks.
@MadAboutGardeningАй бұрын
Hi there, if the cuttings aren't covered they can very easily lose too much moisture and dry out. If your sister doesn't want to cover with a clear bag, they will need misting regularly. It's much easier to cover and then check every few weeks. Hope this helps.
@pronoun_dilemmaАй бұрын
@@MadAboutGardening It does indeed. Thanks very much. By the way, if it's covered, should she keep out of direct sunlight in case it gets too hot?
