Pepper spray and switchblade knife!!
@anonymouslee20833 жыл бұрын
I carry pepper spray and a knife. The 5 D's (deflect, dominate, distract, disarm, disable) still apply when dealing with a gunman. Pepper spray of a knife could make a good 3rd D. Getting his carotid artery slashed open would definitely distract the gunman.

I carry them even when I do carry a gun. A knife is still a great utility tool and probably a better weapon if you're in arm's reach (entangled gunfights get super ugly,) and I like pepper spray because it's the best middle ground between my fists and a gun, works 90% of the time and the other 10% will still diminish an attacker enough for me to get a leg up finishing the fight with my fists.

I understand what he is saying and it all depends on reaction time and how well you are concealed. If this is in the winter and the person has a heavy jacket on, it would be extremely difficult to cut at the depth you would need. But since this is either fight or die, you do what you can.
@MaharlikaAWA3 жыл бұрын
I think it will not br as easy as cutting or stabbing through a tshirt, but not extremely difficult. Especially if you have a very sharp knife and it is strong. But if they have a tactical vest on it's tougher to cut but not super hard.

This video shows just one potential technique. It is a start. There is more to learn, about targeting other parts of the attacker’s anatomy. If the arm is protected, one can move against something that is more exposed.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.623 жыл бұрын
That is why one of my first attacks would be a stabbing attack to the armpit. Very easy to disable an entire arm with this attack, possibly severing an artery in the process, and almost impossible to cover that area. Even in the 14th century when plate armor was popular, the arm pit was a known vulnerability and common area of attack for a dagger in a close in grappling fight. Stabbing attacks are much more effective against clothing that cutting attacks.

But even that would be difficult to execute for the average person. It seems to me that bashing their head with something would be the highest percentage move. If you can get a bat or piece of pipe or something, that would seem like a good option.

Bring pepper spray and a knife. Don’t just bring a knife… it requires you to be close-encounter with the active shooter. Pepper spray will greatly increase your chance for stopping the threat in more than one scenario. Also, some places don’t allow knives like hospitals while pepper spray is allowed.
@big-daddy-o85763 жыл бұрын
It seems that with the shooter's arms extended, a stab or slash to the unguarded throat would be an easier and more lethal strike for an oblique attack. Especially if his arm is covered with a shirt and/or coat. IDK, just the musings of an ex-combat soldier here. And then there's always the choke hold from behind after they pass instantly followed with a kidney stab with your knife like the Army teaches.
@simply_based3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. "End the threat as quickly and efficiently as possible". To me that means stop the attacker form doing anything further. The most efficient way to do that is to make a lethal attack
@daviddabrow60833 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm not so sure about trying something requiring that much precision and technique under those circumstances. And not all knifes will effectively cut clean through a heavy leather jacket.The real threat isn't the tendons attached to the finger,it's the brain that sends the signal to press that trigger. violent and recurring stabs to the face will occupy that brain.

Kudos to you guys for the will to fight back. Fundamentally when I teach weapon disarms I put an emphasis on controlling the weapon of the attacker. Then transition from your edged weapon to the attacker's gun and engage any another threats. Never leave a weapon unsecured in a hostile environment.

@suppression21423 жыл бұрын
You could probably have an advantage to fight for the gun though and potentially get it off him and you can cut his other hand or armpit but it would be very difficult to pull off but possible it will probably be your best bet to try to get it off him after cutting that one hand and then stabbing in the neck and arm pit area to try and disable both the opposite arm and the gun hand arm while doing deadly damage and maybe go for the chest at that point too but if the gun is still in play try to get that off him and out or the fight or even use it against him if you can but you better know how to use his specific firearm and identify malfunctions or if it's even loaded.

If you're successful with the knife, the *average* shooter isn't going to be focusing on more shooting. If they're high, completely & psychopathically out of their mind, they may shrug it off, but you've still built a little time and space for your next action. Saw that often enough in sparring, where an unprepared opponent performs an action, but doesn't have the next cued to go, so there's a pause. You don't cut and stop; there's a next move coming.

However, I come across a lot of buildings, particularly hospitals that also say no knives are allowed. One must keep in mind the vast array of items that are not thought to be weapons, but can be used as weapons. Like pens and pencils. A water bottle, particularly a hard plastic water bottle. Aerosol sprays, particularly pepper spray but others if you do not have pepper spray. Chairs. Lamps. Belts. Fire extinguishers. A weapon does not always have to maim or kill to be useful. Water in the face can distract person long enough for punch in the jaw or the solar plexus. Or other strike. Pens may not be deadly, but they sure can be painful. Especially if aimed towards sensitive parts of the body like the eyes. A fire extinguisher can be used as a smoke screen, and to blind the assailant. Plus then you have a heavy blunt object to use on his person if necessary. The point is, with a little imagination you can see that anything can be used as a defensive weapon. Learn what these are, and how to use them for when you don't even have a knife. But always remember, the best gunfight to get into is the one that you don't get into. Fighting against an armed assailant is always a last resort.

Counter ambush in a transitional space, like a doorway, where you can eliminate the gunman's range advantage and initiative. You could possibly even use the door to pin the gunman in the doorway, use knife to disable dominant arm, then attack any vulnerable areas still exposed. In an up close fight, a knife can be very dangerous as it is more dynamic than a firearm; it is much more difficult to restrain or disarm a knife, it has no moving parts to malfunction, and it never runs out of ammo. My state has very lenient knife laws, so even in places where I don't have my Glock on me, like work, I still have my Benchmade Arvensis and I feel comfortably well armed with a six and a half inch fix bladed knife.

This scenario is counting on the active shooter being ignorant of weapon retention skills. If he intends to shoot and you’re on the X or at ground zero. You’re not going to be able to sneak attack him, you’re going to be in an all out fight for your life. He will have the advantage. If you’re counting on the shooter making rookie mistakes like walking around in the weaver stance you’re pre-paring for failure. If you have a knife you’re going to want to be as close as possible to the shooter so the Tueller Principle works in your favor. And you had better be prepared to do a lot more than cut his arm. Because even if he’s completely untrained he may anticipate your attempt to hide and check corners and doorways. You’re going to have to be prepared to “End Him” Just going for his weapon or weapon hand is highly dangerous. Because you’re counting on a high level of incompetence that may not be the case.
@OldBadger13 жыл бұрын
I have no idea about Tueller but as for the rest of it . Right on.
@bvshr3 жыл бұрын
@@OldBadger1 , the Tueller Drill is a drill that was devised for law enforcement, they realized that a holstered weapon was almost useless against a knife drawn surreptitiously. And they drilled officers to find the minimum distance they’d need to draw their sidearm and clear leather and pull off a shot. Most officers couldn’t do it. Against a drawn weapon you’d have to rely on subterfuge and blatant distraction. Stealth wouldn’t be impossible but it would be considerably harder against an emotionally heightened person who’s ready to fire. If you weren’t shot outright you’d have to feign Capitulation and draw the knife surreptitiously to be effective. You could even time your attack while he is preoccupied with someone or something else. But hiding in a doorway would be rather predictable, even to a novice gunman.

What's the benefit of reaching the knife over his arm rather than bringing it up from underneath to make the cut?
@joshuaquigley85793 жыл бұрын
With this demonstration, it's a matter of leverage I suspect. Having the shooter's arm braced with your non dominant hand, then having the violence of action and putting the power of your hips and low back into pulling the knife towards you with your dominant hand will ensure you cut deeply enough to disable them. I'm not an expert but I suspect that if the attacker has quick enough reflexes, going under their arm would be easier for them to evade outright or to even break your grip before you can make the cut. Therefore ruining the advantage you had by being hidden.

I have to strongly disagree with this defense attack. The initial attack on the forearm will cause the gunman to fire at least once from the shear force you are putting on the tendons. 2nd you better hope you actually cut through them because that is no easy task. From that position you are better off using your right hand to grip the slide as hard as you can while using your left hand to stab the gunmans arm or armpit region.. Grabbing the slide will cause the gun to malfunction when he fires the weapon and stabbing the arm or armpit will force the drop of the weapon. Stabbing is much easier and reliable than trying to slice through a bunch of tendons.

What do I do? Carry in those zones anyway. If I had to pull my weapon out in a gun free zone, having a gun in a gun free zone is probably the least of my problems

A “maybe” probability of success. If perpetrator is wearing a loose jacket over shirt sometimes the blade will engage the jacket will just slip over the shirt underneath. The correct attack point would a brachial plexus stab and gouge. with the added bonus of a pneumothorax and subclavian artery. The only other attack that would work would be to slice the flesh above the eyebrows so the perpetrator can no longer see.

What about a rifle grip? It seems less easy to come cut those tendons, no?

If I’m in a gun free zone and need my gun…I’m gonna draw my gun…that I’ll have on my person.

Was going to say that I don’t frequent any gun free zones. I do tho in that being I watch my grandson play baseball and basketball for school. I always have my Benchmade on me tho.

What would you do? ... Draw my gun.

No such thing as a "Gun-free zone" scree that. I am strapped.

Yeah that works but killing the shooter permanently stops the threat.

Convince them they brought a gun to a knife fight.

I disagree with this tactic. My first goal is to control the gun, then go to town with the knife, starting with the wrist. There are too many ways the technique shown could go wrong and if it does, I want to still be in control of the gun. Was the knife sharp enough, was it cut resistant clothing, did I cut deep enough? Why let go of the arm after the quick cut? Grab the gun, try to move the slide out of battery, then disable the shooter. Remember this is only the first step, the shooter gets a vote on what happens next.

This is why I carry pepper spray along with my gun. I don't want to be up close to a gun man. Plus I wouldn't try to be the hero.

I use my gun because nobody knows I have it until they hear it

Brutal. How about you're hiding to flank, he sees you and spins towards you, you have trouble doing this move, what is plan B?

it seems like this is a "perfect world" scenario. To your point, I see this falling apart in any 1 of thousands of different ways. If I do not have a gun, I will not be ambushing an active shooter with a knife
