Thanks for the great tips! I have been flying with my Brompton folding bike for almost 20 years now. It has been all over the world with me (a beautiful, 23 year old Brompton M3L). I use the Brompton B-Bag because it can fit the bike (folded - no disassembly needed!) and a whole lot of clothes and other bits. I normally also take Brompton luggage (normally the T-Bag, which can take 30L of contents. That becomes my carry on luggage. What is also great about the B-Bag is that it is normally small and light enough to fit under the 20kg weight limit and about the same size as a large 'normal' suitcase!

Thanks, great info! Very interesting to hear that you do put clothes and other stuff in your bike box as I thought that was a big no no from airlines. Seem stupid that it is, but don’t want the box opened up like you say or it not getting sent at all. This is what British Airways say - ‘Clothes and other personal items must not be packed in your bike cover or box. This may cause delays during security screening or mean your bike cannot travel.’

No worries! Yeah they’re not as on the ball as you might think. I’ve flown my bike with BA and never had them open the box :)

@@Cycling366 Oh ok great! Will be flying my bike for the first time ever in January, so bikepacking bags, clothes and general food/kit will be fine in the box? The big question is what’s the best way to get weigh/estimate the weight of the box… weighing everything as it goes in?? 😅

I first travelled by air with my bike in 1981. I would suggest if using a cardboard box to wrap all the frame tubes in either bubble wrap plastic or some pipe insulation (from a plumbers merchant or B&Q. Also some protection under the rear derailleur mechanism to stop it being crushed into the wheel.

My new bike for my next trip has an internal pinion gear box with gates carbon belt - no longer a concern of a bent derailer

Just be careful with the gearbox in the bike box… expensive thing to get smashed up 😝

Helpful video! Can you please do a step by step taking the bike apart video for packing into each box type? I'm very nervous about taking my bike apart and packing it correctly especially into a cardboard box. thank you

Another great video for 'normal' people who do reasonably 'normal' stuff. Quick question if that's ok? I hear what you say about batteries and not packing them in the box. It made me wonder what you do if you've got an e-bike. Only ask as my friend has just got one & is thinking of taking it on hs hols. Thanks

No worries! I’m not 100% sure on the e-bike thing. I can imagine it being a bit of an issue as it’s a pretty chunky lithium battery… some airports may be stricter than others.

I want to take the fiido m1 pro on a plane. It weighs 25kg without the battery. How can I do this?

If your bike box is light enough you might be ok. 32kg is the max weight limit for most airlines

Nope! Pump is much more superior and compressed gas ain’t allowed in the bags!
