What width bars are you running, please? I'm a short-arse, so always struggle with bikepacking luggage on my small frames. I have decided on the small Tailfin drop bar bag as I run 40cm bars with no flare. Having enough room is my only concern. It will replace a Restrap bar bag and means that my luggage will then be 100% Tailfin.

Going to Morocco in two weeks, my favorite so far was Colombia, the Bucaramanga to Bogota section, crossing Zapatoca, Barichara, Villa de Leiva and many beautiful small towns, following the Boyaca Bikepacking route, up to 4,000 m, don’t need camping gear, accommodation and food is super affordable.

Filling a Nalgene bottle or Platypus with hot water for inside your sleeping bag hrlps mitigate cold. Carry a pee bottle for inside your tent too (makes for a good hot wwter bottle too). Snd keep lights and electronics next to your body to save battery life. Cheers

I have limited bike packing experience but I did manage to ride from Banff, Alberta to Whitefish, Montana on the Great Divide and it was spectacular. Great scenery, friendly people (including trail angels) and wildlife sightings (saw my first grizzly). I highly recommend it.

Very good summary, and the perfect closing sentiments. We can all roll our own variants and combinations of both, to suit our own preferences and the specifics of a particular trip. The important thing is to get out there and do it. Thanks and all the best!

If there's a meaningful and useful different between two similar-seeming types of bikes, certainly it's a good idea to give them separate category names. But these days it seems like bikes are being divided into all these categories that are basically just variations on the same thing, and it feels like it's being done for business reasons rather than because it actually makes sense, and lots of channels and other sites are helping to promote that, because, let's face it, they're being paid to do it, or otherwise benefit from it. I mean, isn't a gravel bike basically a road bike with relaxed angles to make for a more comfortable ride, wide tire clearance, and wide tires that are inflated to relative low pressures, and if you swap the tires for somewhat narrower ones and inflate them higher, it's now an endurance bike? And if you swap those for higher-quality tires and inflate them just a bit more, it's now ready for racing, at least at lower category levels?

I like how the conclusions is "I don't care." / "It doesn't matter." but this is the first time I've seen someone splitting bike travel into distinct categories. When I travel somewhere by bike I just call it a "bike trip". Never got a reaction that indicated there was a different terminology based on how exactly you do it. Didn't know that was a thing.

Agreed. I just had a rather unpleasant exchange with one on reddit over the unbelievably important topic of who's a serious cyclist and not. Obviously, I'm not, because reasons... In the end you just do what you enjoy and makes sense to you, and leave the arguments over purity to people who clearly need to get out more and smell the flowers or something.

Nail on the head my man! Nit picking? On yer bike! Who gives a bleep? My first ever night away was on a Raleigh road bike with a ruck sack on my back. Back packing! Steel frame ruck sacking at that! Nothing I carried or wore was bike specific. But I was out there doing it, on two wheels. Stayed in youth hostels. One of my best ever holidays.

Bikepacking is for cyclists who prefer a more adventurous, off road experience with a focus on exploration and self reliance. It's great for those looking for an off the beaten path experience and adventure in nature. Bike touring is for cyclists who enjoy long distance travel, smooth roads, and the convenience of staying in established locations along the way.
@HabaneroTi
@HabaneroTi 3 күн бұрын
I've only bike toured, using these definitions, which actually make sense to me. And since I have no room or budget for a second bike and my one and only bike is a traditional road bike, the kind that has angles that are a compromise between a racing and a touring bike, I'd mostly be limited to bike touring, not packing, as it can't fit tires wider than 28mm, which makes getting off-road difficult. Which is fine because I'd mostly want to tour on roads anyway. The one advantage of bike touring to me would be getting sufficiently off-road to camp far enough away from cars and roads and their associated noise and crowds, in spots that feel more natural and in tune with nature camping and all that, as opposed to official campsites accessible by paved roads. Those are fine too, if it's all that's available, but not quite as satisfying if you're looking to get away from it all. Although, real bathrooms, showers and running water are always nice.
