Wow! - This tutorial was so easy to follow, that I was able to transfer the information given here to work on CUBASE with basically no effort - Thank you so much! The method I used in CUBASE: Create 3 tracks: Audio Instrument Group On the group track, add TAL Vocoder to the INSERTS list on the left. On the Audio track, PAN to the RIGHT and send the OUTPUT BUS (right hand side) to the Group Track. On the Instrument track, PAN to the LEFT and send the OUTPUT BUS (right hand side) to the Group Track. Any notes or midi data sent from the Instrument track, will be 'vocoded' via the Instrument and its carrier changed by the Instrument patch.

Yes, you need both left and right on one channel.

If you're using Cubase Pro 9 or 9.5 make sure the audio track input you're using is set to stereo or it will not work...

I agree, but I can see from the replies, that ppl have problems setting it up. The internal vocoder is fine, but the main strength is using other synthesizers in tandem with this vocoder.

instead of using 'that channel' over and over itd be a lot better idea to use BUS 1 and say thats for TV and BUS 2 thats for the Synth. The one thing you didnt address is what youre setting your MIDI to after you use a synth a the carrier for the Vocoder. Thats what im having problems with. It just fell apart in that section. The carrier part just was very clear. which busses are mono and which are stereo?

Yeah I agree. I see many mistakes in wording and other areas, that I could have done better. I would definitelly make this tutorial different way than I did. The midi routing thing: When you use the TV, route the midi to that insert plugin. It should show up as midi destination. When you use synth as a carrier, route your midi to your VSTi synth, but that should be default by any DAW. If you mean routing the sound, the video says which side (left/side) to route the Send carrier signal and the voice Send signal.

Make sure your gain staging is loud enough on your preamp but not too hot (too loud). Also, beware of too much noise.

i had same problem; solution - vocal (audio) must be stereo, so tal-voc can use left channel, i think (info in tal's user manual). thx for sharing, have fun, aum, s love nia

I'm trying this in FL Studio. I'm using the exact same method but I can hear the chords playing along with the vocal. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Both the vocal channel and midi (chords) are routed to the Vocoder channel only. The Vocoder channel is routed to the master.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. I am not sure I understand what you're saying, but if I do, you are hearing the synth alongside the vocoder output? Make sure the send volume is up, but the actual volume of the synth channell is turned down.

I found out the issue in Logic: carry out the steps as shown in the video but use a channel bus (not channel output), and set the bus send to 'independent pan'

I am losing my mind. I have an audio track with vocals. I’ve added Tal vocoder as an insert. I’ve created an instrument track, and chosen TAL as the instrument output. But when I press play, it’s still just my dry vocal sample I hear. What am I doing wrong? I follow all the steps you mention.

Ok so you slave the midi to both TV and your synth. You bus both audio and the synth to the TV track. You have to put the synth on a mono track and the audio on a mono track. And sent them both through the TV which is on stereo track.

Hey! Really good tutorial but I do not know how to use it on Ableton. Even if I put the vocoder on my audio track, it does not create a robotic voice it just makes my voice sound like my actual voice. Help would be appreciated.

I use it on vocals by picking a preset like "Voice robotic harmonic" put it on a vocal track in GarageBand sing and it works. Have not tried it with a keyboard just vocals. You can definatly hear the difference from dry to wet. Download and try it, even works with OS Catalina!!

Only in case that program would be able to host VSTi plugins. Discord doesn't, not teamspeak or Skype. However I know of videos, where people modify their voice in programs like this, so there must be something, that processes the sound, before it reaches said programs input.

You mean using Omnisphere as a carrier? Yes I am sure it can be done. Make sure to route you left/right channels properly inside Sonar. Basically anything, that can play sound can be set as external carrier.

It sounds pretty good to me, basic but the vowels come out clean without any mouth twisting or forcing on my part, even when whispering it works. Id only use this with sawtooth carrier if i wanted clarity. It actually works live without recorded midi, but live MIDI. The routing in FL Studio was very confusing until i discovered that the µL and R channels were reversed for synth and voice... Cheers
