I left Dundee when I was a boy and we emigrated to Canada. I've been in China for 13 years now. I lost my accent early on. I speak Canadian now, but I recognized everything in the two Dundee videos. We're going back to Scotland next year, either Dundee or Perth.

Hi Evie, Thanks for doing the Dundee videos...they're great, educational and entertaining! It amazes me that down the Scottish east coast between Aberdeen and Dundee and down on through to Edinburgh just how differently the locals of each area actually speak! X😊

Hi Evie, as a native of Dundee who has lived in China for the last 17 years I have to tell you how much I enjoyed your videos. It was so much fun listening to you explain the accent and to hear it again. I had feared I had lost my accent and after watching your videos I immediately started to get back into speaking Dundonian, even if just to myself and friends. I forgot how much I missed my own accent. I left Dundee when I was 36 and in all my time in China I now speak with a rather boring flat Scottish accent so once again thanks for your excellent twa videos on mi accent.

Thank you so much for your comment :) it means a lot to me that people are getting something out of the videos! I went from knowing nothing about Dundee to falling in love with it and the way people speak here. It's a special place, so I bet you're proud of it. And I'm sure you'll never lose the Dundonian in you no matter where you go!

I loved your two videos on Dundee. Never heard 'feeks' but my mum always used to say 'feechie' and the extremely rare 'feech geggs' meaning something like 'yuck'! I definitely think some voiceless fricative /x/ sounds are being replaced by a hard k even among Scots. Thanks for covering the Dundonian accent with such humour and charm.

I think it’s cool how horses is often said as cuddies, or if someone says “do you want a cuddie back” or “gimme a cuddie back” it means, Example one: “Do you want to get on my shoulders?” Example two: “Let me on your shoulders”
@1950dcs8 ай бұрын
‘feech gad!’ was a common expression of disgust in my young day, and the meaning you give is exactly as I remember it.
@raymondmiller97984 жыл бұрын
The reason it's so hard to do videos like this in scotland is that what you say isn't even universal Dundonian. Like one part of town might say something differently from another part. We would also even know whether you were from within the city walls, from tealing (just outside) or from across the river. It's mad!

@@EvieSpeaks Circles are so called because the Latin word for circle is circus. There is still a circle in Dundee called the Kingsway circus, it's at Strathmartine Road Kingsway junction.

You sound a lot like Scots who emigrated to Canada and lost most of their native dialect, but hints of it remain. We don't use the expression 'dinghies' in Canada, but sometimes we use the word 'ding', as in, "Don't do it, you'll get dinged for it."
