This was your first video that I have seen and my jaw dropped at how quickly and easily you started conversations with complete strangers..... Are you some kind of wizard?

I have done that after she asked, "what do you want?" I responded simply, "just making conversation." And she chuckled and gave a friendly smile. She knew I meant no harm. I bet she initially thought I was trying to sell her something, well I was, I was trying to sell the idea of being friends with me. Most people in Chicago think that when somebody comes up to you, it's because they are trying to sell you something, I have fallen for it a lot, but I still give humans a chance and I keep trying.

Suggest you give a *reason* why you're introducing yourself. it will give your conversation a context and cause them to open up more as a sense of trust can be established.

Marcus, Great video, Its great to see how we can challenge out daily assumptions “Can’t interrupt that person they have there headphones in…” “I’d love to talk to that girl, but she’s busy on her iPad…” This episode proves that sometimes we make the wrong assumptions and that actually if we take the chance to start a conversation we can prove our assumption wrong and that people are actually happy to chat, in-fact some are even really happy to be interrupted Great work again Marcus Russy

Hey, yeah I can see my motivation is in the wrong place. All in my head and about me me me. You are saying focus outwardly, makes alot more sense how you are so comfortable now and not self conscious

I think I addressed this issue with the ear buds plugging up their ears in an old comment on one of your old videos. Thank you so much for doing this! I'm encouraged to be more social. Like your commentary subtitles said, I have for awhile apprached people and the first thing I said was, "Hi, my name is ____________. What's your name?" and 9 out of 10 times, they have been responsive; whether or not they catch my name is beside the point, but this is the start of the conversation. (continued)

Hey Ncripzx totally agree with Azren here! Would add this question to you: what is your motivation for talking to people? In this video my motivation was being curious and seeing if I could leave people better of than I found them: whether that conversation lasts 30 seconds, or 30 minutes, this goal remains the same. That way I also leave myself better off too!

Hey, I'm not Marcus but I have insight on this! I used to have this problem A LOT more than I do now, and what it came down was simply practice. The more times that I failed, the better communicator that I became because I'd learn from each failure. This method did damage my ego fairly often, but to be honest I feel like I had to go through it, and if I hadn't done it I would be a worse communicator today.

hey, great video Marcus! I'm always scared of doing this kind of thing because I feel it could get embarrassing if I seem all confident cheery at the beginning (first 5-10 seconds) then I suddenly run out of steam and they pick up on fact I am actually a bit shy and self conscious talking to them. Is this just a negative limiting thought that holds no reality? Where is my mentality going wrong here? thanks alot!

So basically, phones and people reading books or magazines are an invitation instead of a barrier. Thanks for the tip.

(continued) Then I say "Where are you headed?" and then we ramble on along those lines, but I still don't know where the conversation is headed and I still don't know what to say afterwards. I'm usually lucky, if the conversation actually lasts 2 minutes, usually it never last longer than that unless we are seated somewhere waiting for a show to start or something like that. Even then, I still don't know where the conversation is going even with cracking jokes and rambling on it ends on nothing
