Hello hello ! This video just randomly popped up so of course I watched it. I didn’t know that you had a savanna monitor also. I somehow missed those videos lol. I have a savanna monitor as well, I’ve had her since she was just a couple months old and now she’s over 2 1/2 years old. I worked with her every day when she was little and now she is the friendliest sweetest super super tame Savannah ! Her name is Joanna & I take her out of her enclosure all the time and she loves to walk around in the house and she loves to walk around and monitor the backyard as well lol. She’ll lay on me and snuggle her little head right on my shoulder. She’s the best ! Idk what I would do without her ! 🤗🦎 Looks like you have a pretty cool savanna monitor as well !

Older ones that’s why! Yeah they’re great lizards Mine was a rescue They get a lot of bad care in captivity and end up so big sadly :( Glad yours is doing well! Mines pretty sweet, I don’t handle much, or get out muc, only for running around for food As long as he’s not scared of me that’s all that matters to me :)

I know this is an old video, but I have an almost 3 year old Ackie. I’ve always been nervous to handling him because he can be super fast, and sometimes when I open the enclosure he’ll just come flying out. Lol when he was young he’s gotten away from me a few times and I had to find him in my room. Now that he’s bigger I’m gonna start to handle him more,
@paulsmonitors
@paulsmonitors 9 ай бұрын
Don’t handle him at this point, key is to get them use to you, I don’t ’handle’ bumpy at all now Build a relationship with tong feeding Showing him you are friend no foe
@wiellin270
@wiellin270 9 ай бұрын
@@paulsmonitors I tong feed him every time except once a week I’ll drop crickets for him to chase. He has no problem with me touching him of being in the enclosure. He willingly will get on my hand, or come and investigate me. My worry is taking him out of his enclosure and handling him that way. Like I said he’s very interested and sometimes he comes running out when I open the glass.

Any tips on how to tame my savanna monitor from not getting scared and trying to run away when I hold him sound so I can only handle him on Friday and Saturday and Sunday since that’s when I’m at my moms house. I watched it till the end
@paulsmonitors
@paulsmonitors 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the watch! Don’t force him If he’s running he doesn’t want to be handled And You’ll be adding a negative effect Leave him be Get his trust with tong feeding Start with that Once tong feeding slowly touch him a few times Then add the pick up like I do in this one Bumpy now will just let me pick him up But it all takes time Don’t just grab him, let him come to you, or bridge the gap with food Always on there terms, you can put yourself in situations they’re slightly uncomfortable but if we’re truly forcing them and they’re in fear or scared then we aren’t making progress and need a new method
@NathansWildLife

@@paulsmonitors OK because today I took him out right and he was in the car with me and I put them on a leash he really did not like that he’s keeping his mouth open and stuff I didn’t realize it so then he slid his self out and then he kind of sat behind me and unfortunately I don’t have a door sliding tank I have an open top 40 gallon breeder for him right now but I will put them at times and I usually sit around the tank for a few hours on the weekends and I’ll pick him up he doesn’t necessarily run away but I’ll forcefully grab him if he jumps out of my hands and gets under something that is outside of the tank Sorry if not all of this makes sense because auto correct
@paulsmonitors
@paulsmonitors 2 жыл бұрын
@@NathansWildLife if he’s running or you have to grab him I wouldn’t do it Everything you do that’s a negative sets you way way back And the methods you’re current using the force methods will eventually work But Will be a broken spirit rather than a tame lizard I wouldn’t get him out I wouldn’t use a harness I wouldn’t handle him Wait until you have a front open Already coming from above yiure a predator Use food (99% bug diet) to lure him up your arm or onto your hand So then it’s on his terms Let him run through your hands in his set up And go from there This could take months and months of doing that Once he’s completely chill Then you can take him out and let him roam in an area he’s safe from you having to grab him Or you’ll reset all your progress Also Just making sure as set up isn’t big, even as a baby he wants a 130/40°f basking spot

@@paulsmonitors well he’s currently like 12 inches and he’s in a 40 gallon but he’s pretty lazy now he used to be super willing to get food but now he’s pretty lazy to get food and he doesn’t really follow the tongs as much as he used to but I usually pick him up right in the morning when he’s sort of waking up but I can send you pictures on the set up and everything if you have Instagram

its a slow progress but its working 😁 ever thought about target training????
@paulsmonitors
@paulsmonitors 2 жыл бұрын
The issue I have with target training for me is time I’m normally really busy And to target train it has to be everytime you feed Sometimes I have to just put food in and leave So I’d rather just have them tong feeding For my indicus I’m trying to target train her as she is so food aggressive I want her to know when I’m not feeding and when I am So for that I’m doing it But the others I keeps are fairly chill I would say a croc or lace monitor

@@rangosgaff imo it’s only needed for food aggression I don’t see a need for it otherwise Unless you want to use it to get an animal From a-b Which is fine esp for large species like you say But I wouldn’t do it for a awm or black throat for example Unless was always trying to get at me for food! And tbh I’ve found monitors pick it up within a few weeks if that

What to do if my monitor lizard is scared of me? He bitten me twice and he came from the wild actually and didn't caught him there, someone gifted me and it's a Varanus Marmoratus
@paulsmonitors
@paulsmonitors 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I don’t have personal Experience with marmotatus Nor similiar like Salvator But few things come into it Well loads! How old is he and how long has it been in captivity? How long have you had him/been interacting daily with him How big/covered is the set up Monitors esp wild caught take so much more work And if it’s an adult you’ll find you’re really really on the back foot You need to 1st let it know you’re not a threat I do hands off with stuff like that Like my indicus I don’t handle/touch as she still is scared/defensive (had her 2 years and still!) But it’s important to not give it a reason to fear you as it knows humans are the enemy I personally wouldn’t try touch it at all Until it calms down enough to tong feed

@@paulsmonitors Probably months old and Her cage is about 8 Gallons? I mean, It's pretty big for her because it already has a water bath, Some rocks for her to climb and yeah, All of it are essential and I been interacting with her for about 15mins in every one hour and that I recall she bitten me after I took her to a new cage which where she is right now and been feeding her with tongs first and she just chomps on it with no problem but the problem is well yeah, I can't pick it up since I given it a new enclosure.
