This helped me a lot! Tweeter and Flutter always distract each other, but i used your tip(s) and it worked! My birds are getting better each day, but with equal care and bond. It has been hard taming and training my birds because they distract each other, but especially Tweeter, who moves a lot. but same with Flutter, but Flutter jumps and climbs a lot!

Hi, it's been awhile since I have heard from you. So happy to hear Tweeter & Flutter are listening to you and getting along better. Taming is hard work but your dedication is paying off . The process of taming and the experience is something very rewarding that you did it yourself! Pat yourself on the back for a great job and keep at it! Mango & Blueberry send kisses to Tweeter & Flutter! Please share my channel with your friends, family, bird owners and bird lovers because I am not on any other social media.

That’s great! Were they very young? How old when you tamed them? It makes a big difference if the birds were hand raised from a breeder versus a bird that was brought from a local petchain like Petco or Petsmart. Handraised and handfed budgies are practically tamed and very socialized.

teardropface I actually hit mine from a mom and pop pet store. I don’t believe they were hand raised, but they were definitely used to people, because they warmed up to me pretty fast. I've had a bonded pair in a cage together about 3 months now. Although i haven't tried to separate them for training, both will now fly to my hand for treats although the female is much more outgoing and fearless of me. Brienne is like Mango; she loves to play and tear stuff up and is eager to fly to me for treats, while Tormund is mostly just interested in Brienne

At the beginning, I believe they definitely need to be tamed/trained separately! But after a while, mine were quite disciplined at training together. I have also used the following method successfully in many cases (by now, I've had a few birds passing through our "transit home", LOL!): birds in cages are actually "trapped" in there and cannot get away when a human hand invades the premises; they usually don't react positively...; so I use a safe room, I attach a plastic perch to the outside of the bars very near the door and I place the least frightening playperch I have near the cage; I attach spray millet to the plastic perch and the playperch; I open the cage door, I sit nearby but not too close, I play solitaire while talking to the bird but otherwise pretending to ignore him; then I just let him do what he wants, stay in or come out; after the bird is used to coming out for the millet and being on the perches, it is easy to begin step up outside the cage with the millet. The birds are more responsive because they can get away. It is best to exclude the "treat" completely from the bird's usual diet to motivate him to overcome his fear.
@teardropface
@teardropface 8 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right about being trapped in the cage. Looking back, all mine came outside their cages right after they got home. As a matter of fact, we weren't even expecting to buy a bird and had to stop by Petco to get a cage while Blueberry was in the car with a family member. Coming home we assembled his cage as fast we can and Blueberry was switching from perching on my finger to shoulders already watching us assemble his cage. Since I bought mine 20 months apart, I also didn't have to go to a separate room because Mango would not interfere with the training with Blueberry but turned out to be my assistant and Blueberry's mentor instead! Thanks for sharing. That is a great method!

Did anyone else have a bird when you took them home and played with them a bit all of a sudden LOVE you? I had a bird like that. When he wasn’t in his cage, he would follow me around and play on a scooter meant for dolls. He was so loyal one time (i was young, around 7-8) i stupidly took him to Starbucks, on my shoulder. OUTSIDE. he didn’t fly away though. But later, his cage was outside in our screen house in my backyard. Apparently the door opened and he flew away. I️ miss you buddy.

oh, I have another question! If I want to do a one on one session how do I take out the other bird?
@teardropface
@teardropface 7 жыл бұрын
In the beginning, you can have the other bird in the cage for step up. Take turns doing it. If you see one bird stepping up and responses to you, work with that bird first. This way the other bird also leans by watching. If this both of them are all afraid of you. Start from the beginning by just being near their cage and talking. Then when they are comfortable with you go the next step- open the door and leave your hand at the door for a few minutes or until they aren't afraid of your hand. Proceed with each step when they are comfortable with your hand. It can take a few minutes, a day or a week. Every bird's comfortable level with humans is different. Once you got both bird to Perch on your finger, then take the one out of the cage to another bird safe room for more lessons. Keep lessons short 3 minutes and increase if you see your bird's attention is there. Decrease if you see the bird is just not listening. Hope this helps,

Maybe you can help me out here. I rescued my Aditi 5 months ago. She’s terrified of literally everything, she was in an abusive home before she was released. (I think she was out for a while, ate for an hour straight when she was found. Looked for owners for 5 weeks no one claimed or was even looking for her.) I think she’s 3 or older. It’s taken 5 months for her to be okay with my presence and has calmed down significantly with my hands but is still terrified of them, doesn’t freak out and fly all over the place like she used to, she’s now just running around and climbing cage bars. We were getting to the point where she would come and hang out with me and come and sit on me. Then she injured herself quite badly forcing me to clip her wings and it completely destroyed our relationship. I’m wanting to tame her or at least get her not so terrified and to the point of at least stepping up (for her safety) by the time her wings are grown back so I’ll never have to do it again. What can I do?
@teardropface
@teardropface 5 жыл бұрын
This lucky budgie is one of a few that got a second chance in life. Unless you got this budgie directly from her first owner, her past is unclear and how she got out ( released on purpose or escaped accidentally) will never be known. Same with whether the bird was abused or not. One can’t tell just based on it being scared. Being tamed or not is separate from whether it was abused or not. Pre-owned and older birds are much harder to tame even for professional bird handlers. It seems like you were making some progress until the bird was injured and her wings were clipped. If the cause of injury was due to the bird not being a good flyer, then clipping the wings was absolutely a correct decision. However, if the bird was injured because the environment is not bird safe, then the correction should be changing your home. Stepping up is very basic and I strongly advise teaching your bird to do so before letting the bird out of its cage. If your bird have a favorite toy, use it as a security blanket while doing step up. If there’s no favorite toy, time the taming lessons after a few hours of her meal and use food as a lure. Food brings everybody together. If the bird isn’t full, the food will be appealing. Use this time wisely as this is the opportunity to tame your bird while it’s recovering from her injuries and before those flight feathers grow back. Hope this helps.

I recently got two lovebirds which hadn’t been handled in a long time, and I let them both out the cage and wait for them to fly back for food on their own. Sorry for the late response. I just saw your question. BItting is tricky. Is your bird a female? Females get very hormonal and likes to chew and bite avlot. Do you have a cuttle bone and chewing toys? If your bird is male and is aggressive, try to see what triggered it. If the bird was not bitting before and all of a sudden he starts bitting, it must be something that happen causing this behavior.

Try to think back what happened just before this behavior started. How long ago did this start? Believe it or not, I had a viewer who had a very tamed and friendly budgie too. Then one day the bird started to scream a lot and became aggressive. I started to question her what changed and it looked like a new throw/blanket was added to the room. It was that new item the bird didn't like that changed his behavior. As strange and minor as it sounds, anything new in the environment can trigger aggressiveness in a bird. Any new objects? New visitors? New cage position or new anything?

I recently have acquired four birds of my own, all budgies who may be over a year old, who’ve come from an abusive household. This makes it that much harder to attempt to tame, because every time i put my hand in their cage they get all quiet, huddle together and panic... It’s day three and Im beginning to see one of the boys has become more comfortable with me, but I’d love tips on how to go forward with taming. Ultimately i want them to be able to feel at home in my home! Any tips?

Bless you for taking these birds in and giving them the care and love that they so deserve. Keep on doing what you are doing and if you can get one bird tamed, the others may follow. Remember, they are all constantly watching and they do everything as a flock. If one panics, the rest follows even if they didn’t see what caused it.

@teardropface
@teardropface 4 жыл бұрын
Your one to one session is your lessons. What you want to teach your budgie to do. The most basic is to have them learn how to step up onto your finger BEFORE you let your bird out of the cage. Otherwise, you have absolutely no control over them. Then comes to getting the bird back to it’s cage. If it’s not finger tamed, then there is no way of getting the bird back into the cage except trying to grab it which destroys the trust between you and the bird.

Go ahead and feed your budgies by hand. It doesn't matter how you want to present the food, in palm.or on between fingers if giving a sprig of millet. You can tell which bird trusts you by doing this amdvwork with that/those birds individually. Keep on hand feeding so the not -so- trusting ones can follow the ones that aren't shy and learn to trust your hand too. Keep up the good work!

I would take one out to train daily and when the lesson is over, put the bird back to join with the other one. Separation is just for the duration of the lesson so you have one to one session. Start with 3 to 5 minutes. If you see your bird is paying attention to you closely, extend it for a minute or two longer. Keeping it short and fun is the key. Bring a toy with you and play with the bird or some food to feed the bird making the time together nice. Sprinkle a little bit of their seeds or pellets onto the new food so they know it’s food. You may have to offer it many times before they even approach it. So don’t be discouraged. It took over a year before my Mango would even eat any pellets. However, if you can get one bird to eat, the other will surely follow. Good luck with everything and have fun with them. Thanks for watching and would love to hear updates about their progress!

Thank you so much for the advice. I have been trying to mix some pellets in with their food. I also have been putting lettuce in the same spot in the cage everyday so we will see what happens! They are still so afraid of my hand. I have been putting my hand in the cage for a few minutes at a time everyday so hopefully this works. Sunny seems to be less afraid than Sammy...he sits there and looks whereas Sammy still flies away. I will keep you posted. ☺️

This has helped me a lot. Now I can start really training them I hope. I really need some help. I have six budgies, and five are together in a large cage and the other one "big daddy" is in another smaller cage in my room. I'm trying to get "big daddy" to step up onto my finger, but he can hear his friends chirping in the other room. Then he climbs his cage trying to get out and be with his friends. How am I going to get him trained? I live in a small apt and don't have a room far enough away that he won't hear his friends. What should I do?

Do you cover your birds at night to sleep? If so, have your other 5 birds in the big cage and covered each time your are training Big daddy. When birds are covered, they settle down and tend to be quiet. If you don’t cover your birds, then I suggest closing the blinds and lights to make the room dark to simulate bedtime to quiet the other 5 birds. Hope this helps and works.

Hi, I’m a bit late to this video but I got two budgies about 6 months old each and one is male and the other is female only 4 days ago. The male is called Kiwi (I know it’s quite generic) and the girl is called winter and it seems they have already bonded with each other as they never let each other go. I have two cages that I’ve tried to separate them into to train them like you’ve said and when they’re together they always seem to scream at each other but whenever I try to take another cage into another room they just try to call for the other budgie and I don’t know what to do. If I try to separate them, they will cry and I’m a very empathetic person so I end up just putting them back together even if they have arguments. If I put my finger against they’re bellies they will step up bit then they jump back off and head straight to the other budgie and a couple days ago they would sit on my finger for like ten minutes so I don’t know what I did wrong. Anyways do you think you could help me out? I really want to tame them but they won’t let each other go :(

@@jet4313 Your birds are still young enough to be tamed especially when you just got the female only 4 days ago. Some birds are very difficult and cannot be tamed as one wants. At least do the step up taming if nothing else. When they are bonded especially male and female, it is their natural instinct to mate and breed. Then the companionship that is desired between human and bird is completely broken. Its one or the other. Even if you have your birds all tamed and then they become a bonded couple, their bond is stronger than the bond between bird and human. When given a choice, birds will always seek their own kind for companionship unless the other bird is a bully. Try to tame them now. I find strict schedule, sleep ( 10 to 12 hours uninterrupted), daily interactions and multiple daily training will help. Be patient but be consistent so the birds know what to expect. Keep training lessons to 3 minutes at first. If you see they are giving you their undivided attention, add a minute or two. Training period should be fun and not forced. There is always one bird that is more attentive. Start with that one. Sometimes if you can get one to do something, the other will follow. You will have to observe and see how comfortable with you. With new food, keep offering to them. If they tried it and don't care for it, it is ok. Like us, we have our preferences. If they don't even attempt to try the veggies, offer it in a different bowl, out of your hand, or even the placement like on top of their cage if they are allowed to be out, makes a difference in them trying a new food or not.

Heya, I got a couple of budgies this year (Cosmo - M, Wanda - F) and they've been super cute. Wanda has been a bit more reactive with me in that she'll climb onto my finger etc, Cosmo on the other hand started off super panicky and has gotten more calm, and would get onto my finger when he was in a cage on his own. They're both in the same cage now but all progress with Cosmo seems to have been lost, do you have any advice? ;; Thank you
@teardropface
@teardropface 4 жыл бұрын
Like in my video, separate them is the most effective. Your own experience also was when Cosmo was in a cage by himself, he was calmer. Separate them again until you get each of the bird Fully tamed then put them together. When you have a male and female in the same cage, they are going to bond and not going to pay you any attention. You need their undivided attention and concentration when in the taming mode. When the are fully tamed, put them together again but you need to work with both daily so they continue to be tamed. Training birds is an ongoing thing like playing a musical instrument. One needs to practice daily, otherwise you will get rusty with playing the instrument and backsliding. Hope this helps.

Hi I got my 2 male budgie a day ago, one is older and one young about 8 months. and they came from a previous owner that gave me them to me and they were untamed. And I read this" When a bird is caged with another bird, even the same sex, they will almost always bond and then no longer be tame or not want to be tamed. They have a companion and have no need for human companionship. So even if both birds were tame to begin with, once caged together, they would become less interested in being handled and at some point not want human contact at all. " Is this true😓 I'm really worried about this.

Should I separate them to make it easier. but the only thing is that I only have one cage.
@teardropface
@teardropface 3 жыл бұрын
It is true especially if there is no daily interactions with humans. If you look at my video, separate them during training /taming lessons so they give you their individual attention. Otherwise, if given a choice, birds will always prefer their kind over human companionship. At 8 months old, the baby is a full adult. At a year old, it can breed and be a parent so you can see that your birds are on the older side. However, if you work with them and separate them in different cages, it will be easier for you to tame. Let them out daily to play outside together on a playset. Just sleep separately in their own cages at night time. That’s what I do. Update me of your progress in taming these birds. It may take a long time, a year or two, but train daily and don’t give up.

This method is when the birds won’t cooperate and won’t give you their undivided attention. If one of your birds is responding to you while the others are in the same cage, you may start training that bird right there with the other birds witnessing that the human hand is friendly. Bird’s reaction are copied thru observation. However, if none of the birds are willing to come to your hand even when you offer food and are frightened to death, using the separating method may be successful. Training is only a few minutes at a time and right afterwards they can play together again. Yes, if anyone have another idea and have proven to work, please share.

Hi, I am very much active with my channel. It seems like you are doing a great job there with multiple birds and working with them as soon as they came to your home even at different intervals. What you are seeing is very typical. The male budgies are usually the laid back ones and the females are the stubborn and aggressive ones. It has to do with hormones and personality. You are doing everything correctly but unfortunately, I don’t think you can do anything to change those females’ personality. Assuming these birds are young/babies, you will find when those females grow older, they are going to have long stretches where they may be irrate and nippy too. During those times, make sure the females aren’t attacking the males. If so, please separate into different cages. Keep up the good work!

I have 2 cockatiels and they are just close amongst themselves. It is impossible to try petting them or have them on your hand. Sometimes I manage to take the male on my hand but just for short and he flies away. But it's weird, when I eat food on my bed he flies on my head, comes to my shoulder and tries to eat the food out of my mouth so I put small pieces of the food on my cheek and he just eats it. He even flies on my leg and sleeps there and because I don't want to move to scare him I fall asleep too. Because whenever I move he almost flies away. I can't pet him even he's on me. He comes to me, but I can't come to him. I think separating them a bit won't be too bad. I'll still give them free flight so they can be together once a day but I'll buy a 2nd cage to try this method out

Bonded pairs are only interested in one another. Separating during taming lessons can help but will take a lot more time and patience. Usually one is more receptive than the other. Sounds like your male will be easier to tame than the female. I assume the other is a female. Be aware that during hormonal times for females, it is impossible to work with. Just let the phase pass and try again later. This can be months depending on the age and breeding condition.if they are getting ready to nest, definitely don’t disturb them either. You will not get results but will get aggressiveness from both trying to defend their nest. Good luck and am very interested in the progress of your cocketeils. Please update me.

I define tamed birds as when you are in complete control. That includes the bird knowing how to perch on your finger and perching on command. In an emergency or whenever you need to place them back into the cage or wherever you need place your bird, there is complete control. Just like humans, children are behaved when they obey commands and know what to do or do what is appropriate behavior. Many bird owners jump the gun and are too anxious to let their birds out, then finding out immediately that they have the hardest time getting them back into their cages. That is because the birds aren't ready to be out yet. I would go back to basics and start all over again. This will take a lot more time because you need to undo what they learned on their own (freedom and not obeying). I would start with bonding with your birds and make them understand that your hand is friendly and trustworthy. Talking often and hand feeding is a start. Then finger taming to the point where they will perch on your finger on command. Only then try letting them out. I find that a playset outside their cage is a necessity. It’s a place for your birds to hang out. Otherwise they will be all over your furniture and unwanted places because they dont have a designated place to land on. Also make sure your home is bird proof. Many accidents can and will occur if proper procedures aren't followed. I have " how to " videos in my playlist that may be of interest to you. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun with your two budgies. Subscribers get first notifications of my weekly uploads. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for watching my videos! I make it an effort to respond to all my viewers. Even if the video was made years ago, if I get the message, I will respond. However, in the past, if KZbin/ Google doesn’t inform that I have a message, I will not know. At times I randomly look down my comments Just to see if any questions were missed. Congrats on your future new budgie(s). Doing research and preparation ahead of time will secure a smoother transition for the human(s) and bird(s). I, too, have had the same concern when I have had my Mango for 20 months and wanted to bring in a companion for him. As you know, my Mango is all tamed, can talk very well, bonded to me and can do many tricks. It’s difficult to predict how things will come out even though. you know your first bird’s personality well let alone predict an unknown bird’s reactions to your original bird. What I do know for sure is, if given a choice, birds will always choose companionship with its own kind over humans unless the other bird is aggressive and abusive. What worked for me is that I kept the birds in separate cages and they get to play outside during the daytime and freely go into each other’s cages. I did noticed that my Mango’s dependence on me for company isn’t as needy as before because of Blueberry ( second bird) . Mango did continue to talk, learn new words, do things with me but now also have a companion to be with when he chooses to. That’s the key , the bird can choose.... Mango now have choices and his happiness is my main concern even if we lose some of the closeness we had before bringing in a second bird because I can’t be there for him every moment of the day. You can’t predict if they will get along and even if they do get along, older birds all need to have their own cages sooner or later unless you have a huge, huge cage or aviary. When they are young, sure they can be shoulder to shoulder, but not older birds. They need their own space and privacy. No one can predict if your bird will completely lose the bond with you. What you can control is how much time you continue to spend with your original bird and your new bird to continue your daily routine. In the end, prepare to have two separate cages just in case they don’t get along and definitely for the future as they age, they benefit with having their own cages. Yes, it’s a lot more clean up work, but in my house, the goal is to do what is best for the birds even if something has to give. I needed to include details of what can be expected for the future , hence the length of the answer. Hope this helps and please update me!

When I mentioned separating the bird for taming/training, it’s only for the duration of the lesson, just temporarily. Right after the lesson, you can put the bird back with it’s flock. I would start with the bird that responds to you the best. Once you get that bird to perch on your finger, you can move it out of the cage into the other cage and into another room so the bird and you have one to one time alone and not be distracted by the other birds. This first can be the one to demo how correct behavior should be. In other words, this first bird can lead and show the others what to do by example. You will find out immediately which bird pays attention to you and which are totally not interested. Patience is the key and keep at it daily. These birds benefit from a schedule and routine. Good luck and have fun with them!

Your problem is similar to “Lobamutra Arjunan”. If you copy and paste this name and search for the comments in this video, you can also do what I told her to do. I am currently working with her. She has had fast progress with her birds. You can to. No grabbing, no loud noises, move slowly around your birds and keep trying and be patient are the keys to training birds. Hope this helps.

I have a hand tamed baby budgie from a seller but he is scared of me and flies around crashing everywhere in the cage if I move my hand to near him. Also his small box he came with is still inside the cage idk how to get it out he keeps getting scared when I try to get it oit
@teardropface
@teardropface 3 жыл бұрын
Why would you put the box he came in inside the cage? Just put your hand in slowly and take it out In one smooth motion even if the bird is panicking. That box is scaring him and for it to be moving a little and your hand hesitating makes it even more traumatic. He only sees a huge scary box that keeps on moving but not going anywhere and staying in his space. If your bird is hand tamed, it means they have been socialized with humans and not afraid. It sounds like your box is scaring him and also you may be afraid of the bird and don’t know how to handle a bird. Am I correct?

Hi! I have a question: My friend cant have her 2 cockatiels anymore because of allergy. I have 2 cockatiels in a pretty big cage, but I’m wondering if I have anymore room. Also I just got my 2 cockatiels days ago and I’m still working on taming them. Is it possible To move 2 more cockatiels in?
@teardropface
@teardropface 6 жыл бұрын
If all the cockatiels are able to spread out their wings to the max and able turn around freely without having their tails or wings touch the bars of the cage or any other bird with plenty of space in between, then the cage can house all of them. Fighting and squabbles usually occur due to lack of personal space and/or lack of food/water or toys. I would not put two more in the same cage especially when you are still working on your own 2 cockatiels. You also want to make sure these two new cockatiels aren’t bringing any illness to your own cockatiels. I would wait until your taming is completely finished and by then you can make sure the new birds are healthy. Assuming your friend’s cockatiels are already tamed, I would set their cages side by side for a day or two. Then slowly take yours out of the cage while your friends’ birds are still inside their cage and observe. When you see all birds are interested in meeting, then let all of them out together and still observe closely and intervene if necessary. If all four are friendly together outside the cages, then try putting them together and see how they react in one cage but with the door open. Open, just in case there is a need to escape. If they start to fight, separate immediately. Hope this helps.

@teardropface
@teardropface 7 жыл бұрын
I like to finger tame the bird first before letting it fly out of the cage so there is some control of the situation instead of chasing me the bird around when it's time to get it back into the cage. It was good that either your room was bird safe or just by pure luck the bird wasn't injured. Many had lost their birds from open window, doors, ceiling fans that were on, cats and dogs or other larger pets the very first time the bird was let out without being tamed. By your bird able to perch on your finger the very same day (within minutes/hours?) shows that your bird is easily tamed. Not all birds are good flyers. Even though my Mango was finger tamed, I remembered when he was a baby was spooked, he flew outside his boundaries and as I was following him, he smacked into the wall, fell down and continued to fly recklessly in panic mode. I had to continue to clip his wings even though he was finger tamed to slow down his flying and lower the height until he had better control of his wings. Today, Mango is a great flyer with precise maneuvering around objects and accurate landing skills. My taming suggestions are just guidelines and bird owners ultimately make their own custom training/taming methods that work for them. There's really no wrong way as long as the bird's not injured or frightened and end results are the same. It is the same with raising a child. One has to teach according to the style the child can learn best combined with the personality type and environment and situation permitting. How is your bird today? Is he/she all tamed to your liking?

Separating them during the lesson only and then put the bird back into the cage with the other bird. This is only a temporary separation. Have a designated play area with a play set or a few of their toys outside the cage when they are tamed so they have a place to hang out at. Thus way they get exercise and nit confined in a cage all day long. You realize your room/home need to be bird proof as well before they can safely be outside to play. Always with supervision in the beginning too.

I follow your videos, they are great! I have a one year old budgie (Millou). He is pretty much free at home, his cage is always open and he goes in and out as he pleases, most of the time he spends on the floor playing with toys. However I have just added a 7 week old budgie (Whisky). I bought another cage for him too. It has been 2 weeks since they met and they still can't be near each other as the older budgie fights the young one. Their cages are placed together like you have done. Did your budgies fight at first? how long did it take them to finally accept each other and play together?

With Mango & Blueberry, they were very curious of one another at the very first sight. Even though they are from the same parents, I brought Blueberry 20 months after Mango because Blueberry was brought by someone else first and was returned after 20 months or so back to the same store where I got Mango from. The first meeting was with Blueberry inside his cage while Mango eagerly flew and clung onto the outside of the cage. At first Blueberry was nibbling on Mango’s feet and Mango was going after Blueberry’s tail. More playful and nothing mean. I made sure there were always two of everything to prevent fighting. Today they are the best of friends. Last November, I got another baby budgie named Rainbow around 5 to 6 weeks old. Mango and Blueberry were already 6 years old. The age difference is what we are struggling with here. The baby wants to play and play in a very immature way while my two older birds likes their “space” and they take turns in eating and playing with things. The baby has no manners and no patience and pushes his way into everything. My two older ones fly off or move away to let the baby have it his way. Unfortunately, the baby sees it as all fun and games and continued to be bossy and pushy and wonders why the other two flies off leaving him alone. Slowly, the baby is learning the “mature way” but still comes out as “bossy” and “pushy “ and claims everything as his. It’s rather funny to see this at first because the baby is visually and physically a lot smaller than the two older ones but thinks his ribs the flock! While Mango gets along better with Rainbow because Rainbow follows Mango around like his shadow, Blueberry isn’t too fond of Rainbow and either avoids Rainbow or stands his grounds and becomes confrontational when unmannerly Rainbow comes close to Blueberry. It’s been 8 months now and don’t think those two can get any friendlier. What I was observing is that there is no real fighting occuring. If your birds are kicking, bitting and you see blood shed, immediately keep them separate and definitely cannot be in the same locked cage. Each of mine have their own cage to sleep in at night. In the daytime, the cage doors are opened where they freely go in and out of one another’s cages. Mango & Blueberry can be in the same cage for most of the day with no problems. Mango and Rainbow have been in a locked cage together for 30 minutes with me monitoring their interactions. However, I have never put Blueberry and Rainbow together in a locked cage knowing how Blueberry’s reaction to Rainbow on the outside when Rainbow is nearby. Some birds get along in the beginning and then when they get older they all of a sudden start fighting. Some fight in the beginning and then become friends. Monitor and observe yourS closely and decide for yourself. Things change all the time and every bird is different. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your fast response! I do have a cage for each budgie, however the young one gets restless when he sees the older one flying and playing about so sometimes I allow them to interact, the baby looks for cuddles but the older one never liked cuddles, he is very independent and just does not enjoy the company of the new one, there is a bit of nipping & pinching but I never allow it to go for too long. Maybe they just need more time! I'll update in another couple of weeks! L.

@teardropface
@teardropface 6 жыл бұрын
Same here with Rainbow, the 5 to 6 week old baby , loves to cuddle but my older two like their “space”. That’s where the conflicts lies. Baby wanting cuddles are mistaken as being a threat or aggressive behavior to the older two. Then the baby mistakenly thinks the older two are flying away as part of play and now has been doing that for fun! LOL

Hi! I just got my first budgie 2 months ago. I've been doing everything I read to do, gave him a week to settle into his new home, then started slow with putting my hand in his cage, always gentle. At this point he'll eat a millet sprig from my hand and sometimes put one foot on me but if I move he'll fly away. I can tell he's still afraid of me. (He's an adult by the way) Is this normal? Or have I done something wrong? Thanks!
@teardropface
@teardropface 8 жыл бұрын
You have done everything right. It is much harder to train an adult bird but with persistence and patience, it can be achieved. However, don't expect him to let you kiss, hold or pet him like you some very gentle and cuddly birds do. He hasn't be exposed to human hands and interactions other than beng grabbed and shoved into and out of boxes for delivery purposes . Then when he was put into the big cage with all the other birds, he had to be put in survivor mode ( survivor of the fittest). Most likely food, water and space was lacking in the environment and he had to do to survive. So you can't really blame him for not trusting and afraid. Your job is to show him that he is loved by talking, playing, reading singing, or anything you enjoy doing around him. Include him in conversations and your activities. When he sees that you aren't a threat or an of your family members, he will trust and want to be with you . Have you gotten him to full stand on your finger? If not, practice that with him. When he can do that, the next step is to put him on your shoulders. Once you achieve that, you know he trusts your hand and know your shoulders is the place to go to outside the cage ( that is if you want him to perch on you). Make sure nobody spooks him like loud sudden sounds, yelling, slamming doors, things dropping or thrown around your home . These birds have great hearing and sight abilities ( can see into next room's activities due to placement of their eyes on the side of thir heads). Keep up the great job and he will improve. Any videos of your bird ? Please update later on if you have gotten him to do more. I have a playlist of " how to" videos that may be of interest to you in my channel. Good luck and enjoy your bird!

If they have a favorite toy, use the toy and play with them to get a stronger bond. It’s good that you can get their attention with food but time it when it’s been a few hours since their last meal so they are hungry and you can take it a step further. Just make sure yo remove the food from the cage so they can’t got to their bowls to eat and can only eat from your hand. If they are hungry, they will not refuse the food you have in your hand and will do anything to eat. Hope this helps.

question, so is it better to have them together or separate? i'd like to only have one cage, but if i need to get another cage i will, i got a second budgie for the sake of my first one. the first one is somewhat tame shell sit on my shoulder and such. I'm worried that the old bird's progress will be lost completely, will the new one be able to learn from the old one?.... another question, if i want to tame them i must get them to step up in the cage first before i can remove them for bonding?
@teardropface
@teardropface 6 жыл бұрын
I had the same concerns when I got my second budgie. Mine are all in separate cages. I was told that when they are young p, they can pretty much be all in one cage. However, some changes as they mature and prefer their own cage and start to fight. Observe if they get along and be prepare to have another cage if they fight. If they are too close, they will ignore the humans. With separate cages, they won’t be as close and continue to bond with their humans. Given the choice, birds always prefer their own for companionship over humans. Yes, finger tame both so it will be easier for your to get your birds back into their cages or wherever you want to transfer them to instead of chasing them all over and traumatizing them making it unpleasant each time you need them to be in a certain place.

Is this your only bird or pet on the home? You’ll have to give me a better description of what you have tried, how long have you had your bird, how old, gender, what is your schedule like spending time with your bird, etc in order for me to get a feeling of what have been going on for your bird’s disinterest or being withdrawn state.

Unlike cats and dogs, birds need constant socializing and will regress if left alone for a period of time as you have experienced with your male budgie.. He tried to close her even in the first day, be gentle her, pruns her feathers, try to feed her time to time but she is very aggressive to him. Sometimes she bit him and that behaviour makes him aggressive too and makes him timid. Sometimes he runs away from her when she step next to him. He doesn't come closer to me as much as before. He still try to close to her even she bites him offenly. She really bossy and bully to him. That little creatures may look shy and timid but actually they can be bossy and bully. Female budgies are bossy, temperamental, hormonal and are notorious to be biters. She is what you get now and will not change. If given a choice, birds will always prefer their kind over human companionship. Especially when you put a male and female together, as you have witnessed, your tamed male’s focus is on the female and you have lost your friendship with the male budgie because you paired them together. You can put them in separate cages so they won’t be that close. However, it doesn’t guarantee that you will regain the male’s friendship either. Be aware that two separate cages means twice the investment of all accessories and twice the clean up work provided you have the space too. Bottom line, she will not be any sweeter but will be even more aggressive as she matures especially when she is in condition to breed. It is just Mother Nature. Many breeders/ pet shops will not take returns and some may take returned birds and resell them as new birds or worst put the bird down which is a terrible thing to do. Better ask what they do with returns first.

Ultimately you will have to work with one at a time. Keep on offering the millet and see which one responds to you and work with that one a little more. Once you get one to do what you want, the others will follow. Then you can slowly separate and train them during their lessons sessions and return the bird back with its friends. This will take a lot of patience amd commitment on your part. You will need to stick to a schedule and routine daily so the birds will know what to expect. I recently had a youtube viewer contact me that after 2 years of daily working with her one bird, she was finally able to tame her bird and take it out of the cage. That is a success story. If you have the patience and commitment, you will succeed.

Wow, i am really surprised that your male budgie is aggressive and your female is so gentle and submissive. I have only known the opposite. Just to double check, your male has a dark blue cere and your female has a tan, beige , pink or brown cere? The only time I would say a male is aggressive is when he is in the middle of his "breeding act". Is your female afraid of him and does she stand up for her rights? She might be just a baby while the male is a full adult.

The advice is the same even though this video has been made awhile back. They are not going to bond or trust with you while there are “other” better company around. They scare easily as you know. Spend quality time with them approaching slowly. Sudden moves, fast moves, sudden loud sounds and noises make them more skittish. Birds need a set schedule and routine. I would train them the same time each day. Night time in dim lighting seems to be when they are settling in for the night and may be calmer ,responding to your hand better. You make that judgment. @teardropface
@teardropface 3 жыл бұрын
Sound like they aren’t really finger tamed. Being fully finger tamed mean they will step up even without food and on command. I assume you have had them for awhile. The longer the undesired behavior, the longer it is going to take to “undo” it especially when you have more then one, One copies the other. In this video, the key is to divide and conquer. Train them individually so one doesn’t distract the other. I would work on bonding with each one. Spend quality time daily so they can accept you as one of their flock. Have a schedule and routine and be consistent. Avoid sending mix messages that a behavior is not acceptable one day and it is ok the next. Inconsistencies confuses the birds as to what is expected of them. It takes time and patience to tame and especially to correct undesired behaviors.

I have 2 boy Budgies in the same cage, I try to take them to a different room they won’t stop chirping and Singing until they are together. They will sometimes jump in my hand if I have some Treats (seeds) and I can move them around. But they are still pretty scared of my hand. And will run away if I introduce my finger I have had them for about 2 months. Any Suggestions on how to tame them?!

It takes time and lots of patience to tame birds. Keep at it and keep a routine/schedule and be consistent. Its great that they chirp and sing alot. It shows that they are very happy and healthy birds. Enjoy and have lots of fun with them! Thanks for watching! Subscribers get first notifications of my uploads. Enjoy your weekend!

Find out what caused it. Something have changed in the environment. It can be as simple as a new object being place in the room of the birds. I had a viewer who brought a new blanket on the couch and that one thing freaked out the birds . Once the blanket was removed, the birds went back to normal. Birds don't like changes. My birds don't like dark colors, stripes, anything long. Did you put on new nail polish? Color changed? My birds freaked out when I wore a patterned top or a dark colored shirt or any new shirt that is busy. You will have to be the detective and see what has changed just before your birds became afraid. If they are afraid of you, your hand, then it is something on you. Glasses? Clothing? Haircut that changed your looks? Did someone in your home scared them or mishandled them? Please let me know when you discover what spooked your birds.

would it be good to have a scarlet macaw with a parakeet and a conure??
@teardropface
@teardropface 8 жыл бұрын
Definitely not in the same cage. They eat different foods and the larger bird might pick on and can rip out the smaller bird's beak and bodily harm. You can have all of the at home but in separate cages and separate time out to ensure the safety of each bird. Are you planning to have so many all at once? Will this be your first time owning a bird?

@teardropface
@teardropface 6 жыл бұрын
Star Wars fan! If the female is scared to death, this is the opportunity to tame her. At least have her step up. It’s spring time and that means breeding season. Since you got a male and female there, I wouldn’t be surprise if they are bonding with one another. Separate them temporary to another room if possible to get their undivided attention during taming sessions. I find that once they start to breed, that’s all they are into and will not pay any attention to their human owner(s).

I have hand feeder him once but he actually didint step up on me. The other one is way too scared and doesn’t wanna go near me, My two budgies have been living together for 2 years from the last owner and I think I got my budgies a month ago. Any advice? You can try finger taming these birds with food as lure. Birds get set in there own routines and habits. You can spend 5 minutes , several times a day working with them. Many times one is easier to tame.

Hi, thank you for making this video. Quick question though, I have all the time in the world to interact and play during the week but on weekends I am often busy. Is it possible to get 2 birds at the same time and train them during the week but still so they have a friend if I go out for the weekend? I am not out all the time just occasionally when I visit family I am gone for several hours. I still want my birds to talk and bond with me and be able to be tamed, but I want them to be as happy as they can be. I can't start with one and bring another one in later, however, because I don't have the room to get more than one cage, is it okay that they are in the same cage if I bring a second one in after starting with the first one? Sorry if I asked too many questions, I am looking into getting a friend since my cat passed away and I want a pet to keep me company during the day.
@teardropface
@teardropface 2 жыл бұрын
I had success with getting one first, fully training to my satisfaction. Then I got another one, where my first trained bird even help mentor and train certain things to the second bird that I can never do ( I.e., teach it to fly). This entire video’s point is to have them living in separate cages during the sleeping hours and then put them back together in the daytime so they can have each for company. Having two separate cages to train them is the key so you can have their undivided attention. If you don’t have the room for two cages side by side, have you consider going vertical with the cages for tight/small spaces? Have one cage stacked on top of another or one on a table and the one above it is on a shelf that can accommodate a cage on it. I have seen people put their cages on multiple tier shelving units taking advantage of the vertical space.

Hello if I separate my 2 budgies to a another will they hate me or lose trust?
@teardropface
@teardropface 3 жыл бұрын
If you put their cages together, they can see one another. Let them out together once they are finger tamed during the day. Stick to a schedule and routine and they won’t resent being in separate cages because they know, they will have time outside together every day, preferably around the same time and wouldn’t hate you or lose trust in you. Be consistent so they will expect and know they have play time together. In time, they will get it that they each have their own cage to sleep in at night just like everyone has their own bedroom in your home. Thanks for the update and keep up the good work!

my young love birds keep fighting! There siblings around 3 months of age, I’m going to have to purchase a longer cage with a divider I can take out if I choose, would this cage be suitable to train them? They fight so I have to separate them, they still do give me there attention when there in the same cage. But I have heard lots and lots of story’s do I take them into different rooms to trains or just train side by side. Also I have two 11 months love birds that came to me tamed will they help take the baby’s? I intend for everyone to be out for playtime together :)
@teardropface
@teardropface 3 жыл бұрын
Those breeder cages with the removable divider is great. If the baby love bird still gives you his/her attention, then attempt training with the other on the other side of the divider. If you find the attention is not there, only one bird per room for private lessons. As far as if your two 11 month old love birds will assist you in training, it depends on the bird. I have heard one trained and tamed male love bird was immediately untamed by a newly brought untamed female love bird. I would rely on yourself in training and once trained, the senior love birds can continue by example of what is appropriate behavior outside their cages. I had my oldest budgie for 18 months before introducing another semi tamed budgie. The oldest budgie ending up mentoring the semi tamed budgie which filled in the areas where I would never be able to train that second budgie like teach him how to fly or overcome fears of being on the ground or on a glass table. All these fears can only be taught by a fellow bird companion by show of example and modeling behavior. So teach your older birds correctly before introducing the younger ones to them. Otherwise, your hard work with your other two may be undone immediately. Good luck and would love your update on those two younger love birds.

Also it would help if you answered this question! So in the morning or day sometimes when my male budgie is closer to me in the cage (I have female as well) I try to teach him to step up sometimes I can touch him but usually he runs away and flys around the cage and when he does that female just does the same. This might be weird but I can cooperate more with my female. I can touch my female sometimes. And I always say step up whenever I get close enough but it's just not working:/ at one time my male almost stepped up completely on my finger. I just need some realistic advice:/ cause most videos show one bird. All I'm asking for you to help with is some realistic advice, that doesn't require more than one cage, not having the birds separated or having them out of the cage. Sorry if this comment was stupid and wasted your time, it's just cause I'm starting to lose hope of my birds being tamed :((( thank you:) p.s PLEASE answer XD
@teardropface
@teardropface 8 жыл бұрын
If your bird almost stepped up, you need to continue to try and give it time. Patience is the key. Some birds need more time than others and with more than one, they distract one another. Sounds like you are very close to getting them to step up. Next time use a piece of food like millet or favorite fruit or veggie. That will give your bird an incentive to step up in order to reach for the food. The extra cage, out of the cage and separation in another room for training are all methods that work. It may not work for you or your birds may not respond to those methods, but you need not lose hope. Did you know that animals can sense your emotions and act or react to it. If you are frustrated and impatient or upset, they will also sense it and act and feel that way towards you too. Everything takes time and patience. The older the bird, the longer it will take. Try offering them food and extend you finger for them to step up to get the food. You can update me when your birds step up on your finger. I hope this helps.

I agree with you that birds shouldn’t be outside their cages unless they are at least finger tame. Once out, it will be a nightmare to get them back in. Some birds take time in adjusting to their new environment especially if one is very nervous causing the other to panic toO. Continue to slowly put your hand on all sides of the cage for a minute or two and talk to your birds until all side of the cage is covered. See which bird is calmer and you may want to work with that bird first. You can also remove all food from their cage fir an hour and then off some food in your hand to feed them while they are in the cage. With them being a little hungry, they will gravitate towards food and will associate your hand is friendly with the food and trust will develop. Birds don’t like fast or loud things and will certainly frighten them. You may find that in the evenings when the lights are a little low and dim, they are calmer. This is the time to do the taming too. Find out when your birds are the calmest. Trying to train anything (animal or human) that is in the panic mode or hype mode will not get you too far. It is a good idea to at least get a travel cage because you may need to bring your pet outside your home for a trip or to the vet and a large cage is too clumpsy. Fruits are mostly high in sugar and should be given sparingly so don’t worry about it. Veggies are the important type of foods that the birds should be eating. Mine loves brocolli and any leafy greens like spinach, kale, romaine lettuce ( no iceberg lettuce) that are washed or rinsed well. Hope this helps. I also have “how” to vids in my playlist that may be of interest to you. Good luck and have fun with your birds.

@teardropface
@teardropface 3 жыл бұрын
Lovebirds are notorious to be in pairs. Unfortunately, when given a choice, birds will always chose their kind over human companionship. Being spring time and in the peak of their breeding season, mother nature comes first and as you can see, the taming was undone with just getting her the male lovebird. She is biting because humans are now considered outsiders and invading her "nest". It seems cruel to do this but I would say in order for them not to be so close that she is turning aggressive towards all the humans in your household, I would suggest putting them in separate cages and let them play together in the daytime on the outside and not inside any cage. This way they won't be so attached emotionally to one another. However, if your intention of getting that male lovebird for her for companionship, naturally they will react this way. There is no perfect solution. Either you give up that sweet and tamed bird and let the lovebird couple be naturally happy or you put them in separate cages and spend lots of time with the birds individually so they will be attached to the humans again. This is not a guarantee that will happen but it is worth a try. Please update me on whatever you decide to do. Also, her biting and aggressiveness may also be temporary since hormones levels lowers in the summer time.
