Dont worry if your lizard hides all the time, it means he is happy. If you have deep enough substrate like ackies need and they burrow dont disturb the burrow at all. Dont put water in the burrow either. If you spend enough time with the lizard they are easy to train. I trained my monitor to respond to a clicking noise which makes him instantly ready to feed. I will post it on my channel for those curious.

i did these exact “socializing steps” with my nile monitor, i no longer get whipped nor bit. She even climbs on my arm when i tong feed her sometimes. All she does now is walk away from me slowly, not all aggressively like before, i can also pick her up sometimes. I think nile monitors just have a bad rep because they get in the hands of the wrong people most of the time... mainly because of their money value as babies.

LOL they get a bad rap because they are among the worst choice of a pet for 99% of people. They come out of the egg defensive and take a ton of work to get to a non defensive state....then there is their housing and food requirements. Nile monitors are among my favorite monitors but holy cow, are not a good pet most of the time.

Also depends on who you purchased them from. Aka if the breeder was an absolute asshole to them regarding their enclosure size, husbandry, and interactions. My mangrove is very friendly compared to my ackie because my breeder for the mangrove spent a lot of time with all of the babies-3months. The ackie however was put in a clear bin with paper towels and a water dish at 4 months old. And the guy called them little shits and to pick them up forcefully.

Yea, luckily Ackies are among the easiest monitors to breed so there are alot of breeders. Best to wait for the right animal from the right person. I have a soft spot for mangrove monitors even tho they are far too big for most people to keep successfully.
