Thank you SO much for covering this in your highly detailed style. The lighter tones were giving me a ton of issue and a lot of it was just not trusting the washes. The idea of moving around a bit and coming back when its calmed down resonates with me having worked with airbrush. Airbrushing you want to give the work time to settle so you can see the value and then come back to it. Your explanations and illustrations are such a huge help in understanding this stuff and its appreciated! Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have always drawn and painted. I have always been extremely fascinated with the art of tattoo. I love getting tattoos. My husband bought me a complete tattoo gun setup with ink and everything a week ago. I actually practiced on a banana.😂 Since then I have touched up a tattoo on my sister in law, gave her a Chinese strength symbol and I did a Norse rune of Freya on my husband. All because of your videos. If it wasn't for you I would not be able to follow my dream. I have learned so much from your amazing videos. Again Thank You!!🤗

Hello! Great video. Would you call give a name to this technique? Would you call it whip shading? Because of the follow through with the hand, like hitting the golf ball? And you're gently whipping out the last part of the needles that touch the skin to be even lighter than the initial touch.
@JonoSmithTattoo4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t really call it whip shading as that’s a slightly different technique. I’d just call it regular shading or smooth shading. Your machine does benefit from having some give for this technique. I cover this subject a lot more in depth in my other video ‘hit & bog explained’. Thanks for watching!

Is it better to soft shade with a machine that has a lighter stroke vs a harder stroke i have 3 machine’s one has a 3mm stroke and one has a 3.5mm and one has a 4mm stroke which is better to use teacher
@JonoSmithTattoo2 жыл бұрын
The ‘stroke’ isn’t measured in lightness and hardness. I think you’re confusing ‘hit’. But for best results with shading I’d go for maybe the 3mm or 3.5mm stroke and preferably a machine with a softer hit as apose to a hard hitting machine. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@davidgregory12292 жыл бұрын

really good video mate! did miss some talk about machines for shadeing, how the different motors makes different, and stroke etc for shadeing.. I can check yes to all those factors, and on some areas i see big needlemarks, and some areas i do smooth shadeings. So the skin has a huge factor aswell, i got real issues shadeing below the knee area, where the skin is really thin.

hi JONO ..great video...my soft shade looks quiet impressive when its fresh but often disappears completely when it heals making the tatt look incomplete...I cannot figure out why...I believe it went in the skin pretty well as it stays even after washing it few times after the jobs done......would be very grateful if I could get any advice on it...
@JonoSmithTattoo3 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say without actually watching you tattoo but this usually happens if you haven’t gone deep enough or a common factor is people sometimes just don’t go dark enough. You have to compensate for the tattoo to lighten quite a bit when it’s healed so it’s best to go a little darker when actually tattooing. Hope this helps!

Hey juno! I've been watching you for about 2 and a half years and iv went from building and tuning machines at home, practicing on fake skin to having an apprenticeship to now being a licensed tattoo artist and I'd like to say thanks for all the info. I have one question that I was hoping you could help me with. I use a Cheyenne hawk pen among many other machines and I have a hard time putting in lines with anything bigger than a 7rl. I know you have used these machines and was wondering if you have come across the same problems? I would Really appreciate it if you could tell me your take on the hawk pen and lining please and thanks.
@JonoSmithTattoo4 жыл бұрын
Lining with bigger configurations can feel completely different to lining with smaller ones. I find slowing your hand speed down slightly, making sure your machine is hitting hard (in Cheyenne’s case higher volts) and applying slightly more pressure than you would with a smaller needle will make a huge difference. Thanks for watching!

I've been tattooing for a little over 11 years have been doing it professionally for about 9 years , now when I first started it was all coil machines then rotary now i just recently made the more to the wireless pen machines and i gotta tell ya i feel a huge difference. I specialize in black and grey photo realism and i have to say I've been struggling a bit to find my center with these new machines but because of how much I've invested in them and not to mention how convienent they are I dont want to go back to what I've become used too.. I really enjoyed your video and found it to be very helpful, but I have a question of you dont mind. Anything I should try to do differently with this new style of machine to make life a little easier lol. I'm asking because I seen in the video your using a pen as well. Anyway thanks again for the video and fuck those haters bro all they do is talk shit because they ain't shit ...
@JonoSmithTattoo3 жыл бұрын
I had the exact same issue. The biggest difference I found was that I had to slightly slow my hand speed down when adapting to pen style machines and rotaries. Other than that it’s just a matter of practicing a lot and getting used to the ‘feel’ of the machine. Thanks for watching and thanks for the awesome comment!

So why would you wipe it down with green soap it’s an irritant and will cause it to be More irritated and more red then if you just use cool water and even better than just water use bottled water because the fluoride will take the redness out Using soap during tattooing it’s just causing irritation
@JonoSmithTattoo3 жыл бұрын
Green soap is basically a medical soap with antibacterial properties. So it aids cooling the skin as well as keeping it clean and reducing risks of infection.
