The "or whatever" part of our call to action: 1. Print out a poster and hang it up at your work/school! 2. Tell your students or teachers or labmates or coworkers! 3. Share on social media! Lol. Remember that wolf video from ages ago? I not only ate dinner during that, but a dinner of noodles. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. That abscessed squirrel from a while back on the other hand, that was too much. Blood and guts, sure. But pus? I'm out.

I would love to watch y'all taxidermy a bird. It seems a bit different with the feathers. Do taxidermied fish exist?
@renschuon49929 жыл бұрын
Yxaj yes taxidermied fish do exist but I don't know anything about it. I just know that our swim team has a taxidermied Piranha that sometimes comes to meets because our mascot is a piranha
@ninetoedlizard66504 жыл бұрын
Most taxidermied fish are recreated. You give the dimensions of the fish, pictures, and someone will recreate it from scratch using airbrushing and paint. If you use the actual skin it wrinkles loses color and has some other issues.

Old video now I know, but I'm curious as to why you would slit the squirrel up the back where you have to hide the seam vs case-skinning it, where the seam becomes invisible as it's somewhere that isn't typically on display.

@thebrainscoop9 жыл бұрын
I think she's done a few, but they're way different and more sensitive than mammals. When time allows I go into the bird prep lab and practice, usually it's my end-of-week treat. I want to be really good before we film an episode in the lab!

***** Is it because they have hollow bones, or just more ornate plumage?
@ShadeSlayer19119 жыл бұрын
She did mention that her brain scoop was used on some starlings.
@ShadeSlayer19119 жыл бұрын
David Shi I don't think it's cuz of the bones, since pneumatic bones are nearly as structurally strong as regular bones. I prepared a bird specimen once, and it was terrible. But I haven't done a mammal yet, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I will say that it is a struggle to keep the feathers looking nice.

Didn't you mention that Carl Akeley also made the mistake of using too large a form on one of the Fighting African Elephants?
@thebrainscoop9 жыл бұрын
Yea, but it wasn't a mistake. His wife Delia felled the larger of the two elephants and Carl wanted to compensate so he made the form for his larger than the elephant was in life. Now Delia's looks great and his elephant is cracking because it was literally stretched too thin. Silly Carl, nobody cares your elephant was smaller because UMMM YOU TAXIDERMIED ELEPHANTS. HELLLLOOOO
