My maltese will play rope tug and retrieve but won't put a ball in my hand. He just chucks the ball in my way.😂

I just want to know what you do if he DOESN'T chase you after you release him. My dog just runs away, lies down and chews the toy, I don't know what to do, he's getting the reinforcement from chewing the toy I think.

My Samoyed pup just turned a year old. I would love to reward him by playing tug, however, I have tried with several different tug toys, and he just doesn't tug with me. For fetch, I can't interest him in chasing the ball. So far, the closest I get is tossing him a soft kind of pom pom ball, or soft hedgehog toy. He catches these in his mouth, and I happily say "Yay!" and reward him with a treat. But he doesn't chase to get things, and doesn't tug. Yet I know he has strong prey instincts, because he certainly is interested in chasing cats, squirrels and rabbits.

Wow❣️ With this bit of tutoring I believe I will finally be successful at teaching my 8-year-old dog, who clearly was never taught to play, to retrieve reliably and enjoy himself. This is going to be fun ❣️🤸🏼♀️❣️

I have a 3 year old boxer mix, does it work with older dogs?

Great, I’ll try this tomorrow. We’ve been playing chasing the toy, I thought I had to wait for the retrieving, my puppy is a GSD and 10 weeks old.

So I have also been using a second ball to get him to retrieve and we do an exchange. But he just waits for the second ball to be tossed as well. 😢

How did - do you have the dog release the toy. Our border terrier loves to play tug but he doesn't release the toy.

Wish I’d seen this two months ago when my pup was still small enough to easily pick up. How can I prevent her being accidentally rewarded for leaving it to chase me, without picking her up?

How do you get the dog to release the toy? Mine just keeps chewing it in my hand

WOW. What a difference betewwn the young tri puppy and the red one.. Do you work with the tri puppy any more..
@SusanGarrett7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Tri puppy was a student's puppy I was just demonstrating the technique with...the red puppy is my own who was raised with it.

I'm trying this with my 7 year old dog but she has no interest in toys. I have no idea how I'm going to shape a retrieve for later levels of Rally obedience

This is great! How do you train to "give" the toy? My pup just loves the tug of war part so much he'd rather do that all day. Thanks.
@RavRob4 жыл бұрын
To enable the pup go give the toy, just make it "no fun". Simply tuck the toy next to your leg and stop pulling. The pup will soon let it go and you can start all over again.

my pup does all this....but how the hell do you get them to let go of the toy....they just like tugging on the toy. Will follow me if i move away as to say lets continue playing but i find it hard to get the toy away from their mouth as they grip it tight

Great video. Our 6 month old Golden Retriever loves to retrieve. We didn't have to teach her anything, but I am going to try the sitting between games. I noticed you didn't tell the puppy anything, she just did it. That is one thing I need to learn to do. Our Golden, when she is outside, gets distracted so easily, especially when she sees a person. She loves people and I can't get her to not run to them. Would love suggestions

I would like very much to teach my dog to tug and retrieve. I have Parkinsonism. I can’t run or spin or even turn quickly.Would you possibly have any suggestions for me? I would so appreciate a it.

Ugh my shepherd mix puppy was a fricken pita and took AGES to learn to retrieve. Now fetch is her favourite game.

Will this work with an older dog age 3yrs old?

Genevie Coleman yes, a dog can still learn it’s just takes some patience to get it to stick

Can I see this technique with different breeds? My terriers much prefer to tear the toy into pieces than bring it back. My poor training?

What would your suggestion be for an 8 month old lab that plays keep away with fetching, my frustration level is very high and loosing hop on him being a hunting dog if i can't get this corrected on him, I was always told never to play tug a war with hunting dogs so i never did that when he was younger, i have tried using long check cords and gently pulling him in but he just seems to fight them and it turns into me trying to hold on too a mini wild horse, also tried running backwards when he comes back to me but he just stays 1 ft away and never fully comes to me then i usually get tired and stop.

Did Susan reply? I have a 6 month old, high driving, field bred, chocolate who is thinking she might like to play keep away. BTW I clicked on your user name and watched part of your video of your chocolate....I couldn't watch the whole thing as I could feel myself welling up. It's been just over a year since my husband and I had to say goodbye our previous lab of 16 years...she passed just short of last years pheasant season.. It was great to see a chocolate who was obviously a pheasant finding phenom as both of ours (black labs) have been. Obviously a great dog. I'm planning on further destroying the myth that chocolates can't hunt!
@Gunnut8807 жыл бұрын
No never got a reply from her. My yellow lab puppy is now 9 months old still having same issues with keep away at least when i am trying to work with him in the backyard, but he has brought it back few times just seems like it has to be his idea to bring it to me, i have taken him to grass field and he does better but drops it about 1-2 ft away from me. My last dog Boomer the one in the video you watched he was absolutely a very good upland dog especially on pheasant, and easy to train so that makes it hard when you have a dog like that as your first dog then go to high energy dog for the next and have issues that need corrected or different training, i might have to break down and spend the money and take him to a trainer.

My dogs would never ever tug. If I try, they always let go, no matter how fun I made it. My current dog, no matter what, would not tug and if I throw something, she just looks at it. Not at all interested. So competitive obedience was out. But she did like agility and heeling exercises.
