Great idea with attaching a line to the toy. We use a "Kong Reflex Tug Durable Dog Toy" and it works great for our 5 mo lab. It's soft on the teeth, has great hand-hold/line attach points, stands up to a game of tug, and it floats! Thanks for the great videos, I absolutely love the McCann style of dog training.

When I first got my dog (GSD/Doberman mix), we tried tennis balls at the dog park. My last dog--who was also my first dog--was a Lab, so he loved them, and that was what we knew. New dog was uninterested. Two things changed everything: different shapes, and a squeaker. She learned to be interested in fetch with a rope toy, a squeaky bone, and a kid-sized foam football. Now she'll even chase and retrieve tennis balls! Another thing that helped was that at first, we only played fetch indoors, throwing a really short distance, because indoors was the only time she'd want to play. Then she'd get so interested in the game that if she couldn't find whatever the toy was, she'd bring random items like a bottle of nasal spray. We're trying to get her to like frisbees next because she can jump very high.

With my very food motivated little dog, I got one of these retrieving dummies that store treats deep inside them. They’re impossible to get to without opposable thumbs and once my dog had worked that out he took it to me for help - every time he brought it I’d get a treat out for him. He learned fetch in a few minutes and we’ve been playing it ever since. My mum’s dog meanwhile isn’t interested in food and doesn’t seem to understand the bringing it back portion of fetch. Going to try the leash trick shown in this video to see if t works for him. Thanks for the suggestion :)

The day I got my dog from the pound she saw a frisbee and it was instant love. She was so smart. When my mom got sick Tessie would gently lay the frisbee on the bench instead of dropping it at her feet. If it was out of reach she would even bring it closer. Mom didn’t have a lot of strength to throw the frisbee very far but they liked keeping each other’s company.

I have my hands full with two 1.5 yr old Malinios mixes, that we just got from the shelter. They are extremely smart and amazingly good. THEY run for the toy.... but will NOT bring it right to us. In fact, if I hold the toy Anna will stay out of arms' reach. (like in another of your videos I get two toys tossing one, then the other- that seems to work best) I guess my girls need to learn to trust us, and really want that love. Elsa is food motivated. Anna is gonna be a great frisbee dog, she does spectacular jumps! Now to get her to love me so much she brings the toy right to me. 🥴😊

Awesome video great idea. I have been doing this with my 3 mo Border Collie/Kelpie mix. I screwed up and missed an opportunity when I threw the ball the 1st time she brought it and dropped it at my feet. She loves the tug o war at the end. Now if I reach for the toy she runs away with it. So I wait for her to put it in my hand snd she will try to jerk it away before I can wrap my fingers around it. She dose this till I successfully get ahold then we tussle till I get control and throw it again and the gamr startd over. She is very mischievous and me being 65 I am not sure who's smarter. Simple games are very boring so we one up each other. Her name is Chicky which gives me opportunity for many nick names lol. Thank you for such a great series Ms Michal

🦮🎾❤️Works. I was trying, without success to get 16 month lab we just received to fetch. Her retrieve rate with tennis ball was about 50%, then would lose interest (the dog!). Once I did as instructor suggests, waving ball a bit and also running back after dog has chased ball resulted in retrieval of almost 100%. That was after first time trying this approach after watching video. Thanks!

Absolutely love your videos! I'm addicted and have learned so much more with your videos than with any other. What do you recommend if your dog really doesn't want to bring the toy back? I leash the toy so she can't play keep away but when I bring the toy back to me on the line, I'm practically having to drag my dog back to me. I've tried being exciting and running back to encourage her to bring it back but it always ends up with me dragging her back to me to play tug when she's caught it. I have two pups that love to play but I've never been successful in incentivizing them to bring it back to me for a game of tug.
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Amber! There are a couple of things you can do in your situation. Try starting a little closer to her when you throw. If you’re 6ft away, it may be too far to get a great turn and she may think that she’d rather play with it on her own. If you start closer, she has a lot less opportunity to feel like that’s an option. Try practicing in a hallway, where there isn’t anywhere else to go, except back to you. With several repetitions you will begin to show her that the game gets to continue after she’s given the toy back to you. You can also change the focus of the game. I love using the game of tug to build drive for bringing the toy back. I created a video about that, here is a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGPNkISnYq50fLc If she has a great response to name, you can use that skill to initiate the return to you. Again, working close to her, you can toss the toy out, follow her to the toy then “NAME” and back away. We have a response to name video that you may have already seen. But here is a link to make sure you’re getting a great turn: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqS5q2uCl8-qe6M Happy Training! ~Ken

McCann Dog Training Thank you!! The problem that I'm running into is that both dogs have solid recall that goes out the window when a toy is involved. I also tried it down the hallway but they both didn't turn around...instead they just kept chewing the tug toy in the corner haha. I must be doing something wrong! I found that retrieving for a food reward (piece of their kibble) worked really well but I know this is controversial. I only used this for playing fetch with tennis balls...not the tug toy which I think they would lose complete interest in tugging it if I had food.

Great video. Do you teach your dog to drop a toy and fetch at the same time? If not, which comes first? Will the fetch training have a negative impact on the drop training if done together?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Such a great question, Richard! I love the depth of this one. The short answer is we will teach these skills together. If you have a dog who isn't crazy about toys (or the fetch portion) then we will allow them to hold the toy a little longer, use more motion away from them, and maybe even try to play a little tug game with them to increase the value of the toy. We will keep the "drop" or "out" brief and start playing the fetch game again. If the dog is reluctant to drop the toy, then we will shorten the retrieve, again use motion to cue a little chase and insist on dropping the toy a little sooner when they reach us. I have a video that talks specifically about the out command that I think you'll enjoy. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJq2qYuLj65_ftk Happy Training! ~Ken

I was wondering about training my Beagle puppy to play fetch and return. However, Since they are scent hounds, as you know Beagles have a keen sense of smell and superior tracking instincts. I understand that a 30 ft. leash is suggested but it seems like it isn't quite fun enough as I think another instinct for a dog is to run further. How may I train my puppy Ajax to play fetch in a park setting and reliably come back, especially if he smells a rabbit or any other small animal? Is it possible?
@rachelwilder6501

My puppy was so good at fetch, such a natural. And I thought he was really enjoying it. We'd play tug, I'd say give and he'd let go, I'd throw it, he'd bring it right back, we'd play tug, and so on. He did that for a couple weeks and it was so easy and fun. And then he stopped bringing it all the way back. I will try this technique of putting a leash on the toy. If I were to run the opposite direction, I"m pretty sure my puppy would lose interest and go off to do his own thing. I will try that also, though. So that I don't keep doing it wrong, I'm wondering, what I did wrong to make him not want to bring it back to me. I really thought he was excited and enjoying all of it.

Hi there, Kristin! You sure can! This is really a fun game for a dog who already loves to play tug. Take advantage of that toy drive and make the retrieve all about the game of tug at the end. Yes, Bee-Line is a smooth Border Collie. Thanks for watching! ~Ken

My puppy has got the fetch down now but he has accidentally bit me 3 times drawing blood during the tug part because he readjusts his grip on the toy. To be fair, he is teething but now I'm super hesitant to play tug. I feel bad because he's started to take the toy and give it to my hand but the gash still hurts 😩

What if you have a dog, 11 month old border collie, who simply doesn't go after anything. Shows no interest in tugging or playing with toys. Ironically, his name is "Chase". I really want to get him interested in fetching bringing things back to me but I don't know where to begin. Do you have a video on that aspect of Fetching?

I am actually surprised I tried to teach my 3 months old Australian shepherd to fetch and he ran for the ball and brought it back to me. The only problem is that he doesn’t drop it in my hand. What can I do? Great video by the way

My 3mo. old puppy is very good at bringing the toy, but he doesn’t let go. We just loose track of fetching and it turns into tug of war. How do I make him drop. Treats do not work as well.

To teach her "release". For dogs who don't want to let go I'll keep a tennis ball in a pocket and offer it in exchange. Take it out, wave it around while giving "release" command. They will usually drop the fetch toy to get the ball. Vi simply then drop the tennis ball on the ground. They grab it but by then I'm waving the fetch toy, enticing them to play with it again and they forget about the tennis ball and return to playing fetch.

Hi there, Ciara! Bee-Line is the kind of dog who likes that kind of play. She gets really excited about physical tugging and the rough and tumble play-style. Your dog may like that as well, or they may find chasing you, or a certain tone of voice more stimulating. That will be something you'll have to figure out for your own dog. In this video, Kayl is trying to build lots of motivation for the point in time where Bee-Line gets back to her with the toy. So making that part of the game the most exciting and stimulating part is why Bee-Line comes back with so much intensity! Happy Training ~Ken

You should explain how you get Bee to actually give you the toy & “drop it.” It looks like he easily brings it back, but then, puts up a bit of a fight everytime you try to take it. You don’t really show your “drop it” command.... and in one instance, it looks like you cut that part short & then continued the scene after you already have the toy. My dog has no problem bringing something back to me, it’s the letting it go & relinquishing control of the item once he returns that gives me trouble. More explanation on this would be helpful. Great video!

I like this method I'm going to try it 😊 all the other videos show the lead on the dog not the toy. and when I've tried that, she doesn't go fetch the toy. it's like the lead when it touches her, weirds her out. hopefully this method works better

Trying this today. I was training my dog so wrong apparently. He runs around the house with the ball in his mouth and expects me to chase him, and I can’t do that! Then he gets all upset. I’m determined to teach him how to fetch so he doesn’t get upset at me for not running after him constantly, not fun for me at all.

That’s a good point, golemkonty! Especially if your dog isn’t that interested in toys in the first place. If your dog is crazy about playing tug, then don’t worry about letting them win too often. They’re already really motivated for the toy. Happy Training ~Ken

@@McCannDogs if your dog likes to play tug and you never let him win, after few months he will not like this game. He is motivated to win the toy, this is why he tugs, if he never wins while he tugs, he will be dissapointed and his interest will die.
