I was taught that you must model the behavior that you want from the dog. If you want them to be calm, you must be calm. They look to you for cues as to how to react. Too many people yell at a reacting dog, somehow expecting them to calm down.

I have the smallest standard poodle who is sweet at home, loving, and she's a super faster learner. I feed her, groom her, teach her, work from home so she's with me all day. However she barks at other dogs (rarely while on walks) and I signed up for a weekly obedience class for which I've already done everything they are "teaching" and my time there is only trying to get her to stay calm and quiet. We are a month in and she still barks most of the class. Some days are better than other with a lot of treats I can get her busy smelling and searching for tossed food but its very difficult getting her to focus in a basketball court or "yard area" with 8 other dogs and handlers. Sometimes I will take her to pet friendly stores like Home Depot and she won't bark at people and other times she'll bark at a random person in the middle of being what seems very relaxed. She also barks at my youngest (15yr old) son at home. Sometimes I feel like she's resource guarding me. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions or help or if there's a video you've done you think that will help me.

Try what I do in this video whenever she barks. You make a Tsss sound to get her focus, get in front of her to block her and ask her to sit. Then you look at her until she looks at you and then you lick her neck with your fingertips. If you still have trouble, please give me a call. We have a 2yo Moodle who continually barks at people passing by our back gate (which leads to a forest walk). How do I correct her calmly when she is 100m away, to show her I am the protector? Thanks, Jenni

You have to be at the gate with her to correct her when she barks and teach her to be calm and relaxed instead. When she barks, make the TSSS noise, get in between her and the gate, walk into her to move her back from the gate about 15 feet. Ask her to sit and look at her until she looks at you. Ask her to stay and turn and go back to the gate. If she starts to follow you, turn back, TSSS her and block her to move her back again. Ask her to sit, look at her till she looks at you, ask her to stay, then turn and go back to the gate. Stay at the gate until she lays down or walks away. Keep doing this until she no longer barks at the gate. If she listens to you most of the time it shouldn't take long for her to learn this lesson. Cheers ✌️
