I still remember learning how to throw a baitcaster on my own. I really did not have any friends that were into bass fishing as much as myself. I would watch all the fishing shows on Sunday morning and then go outside and practice. The way I learned how to do it was to tie a practice weight on my line and casted in the grass field next to my house. I would stay out there for hours practicing. Once I was ready to go try it out in the real world I would strip all the line and put fresh on there. Of course it did not work the same on the boat as it did in the field. But I have to say by the end of that day I was pretty good with it. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Your advice is well taken in several points of the process. BUT, “Follow Throught” “and not stop short while you cast” is golden advice. Everything has to be in balance as I have been learning about how to set-up and then use my new Baitcaster. Thank You for the video.

I watched for one reason, that was to see if you gave one particular tip about casting and you did. Frankly I'm a bit amazed. The tip is: turn your wrist @7:49. I watch many fisherman not do that and struggle with their casting. Pay attention here on KZbin fishing videos and you'll see that most fishermen don't turn their wrist. I learned it many years ago when I bought my first baitcast reel, a Abu Garcia Ambassador 6000. The reel came with an instruction booklet (times were different) that showed how to cast and they made a point about turning the wrist as the proper way to cast a baitcast reel. I still use that reel for muskie fishing 45 years later.

Hey Junkies, what you all think of my boys dancing skills? Also, let me know if you've had the opportunity to teach someone how to use a baitcaster, how did you do it?
@bassnazi47136 жыл бұрын
TackleJunky81 usually went with the way my dad and grandfather showed me. Always held the rod out and released it, adjusting the tension until it would drop slower than freefall, and stop when hitting the ground with barely any overspin. Usually just kept the brakes set half way for most lures.
@samdentler71746 жыл бұрын
In the process of teaching my nephew how to throw a baitcaster and he's been getting better and better! Did exactly the same think and showed him how to back off the tension. He's gotten good enough now that he'll backlash and go "well I backed it off to far so let me tighten it back up a bit". Great video brother!

Before I was married I tried to teach my girlfriend how to use a baitcaster. She really was in the fishing as much as I was. But sadly she never caught on. I wish someone where they gave me advice that you gave about not fishing when you were teaching. I thought if she watched me as she was doing it that it would make it easier for her to learn. Enjoy your boys at this age time goes by quickly. Both of my sons are full grown man and they both four years apart went and join the Marine corps right out of high school. Whenever they come home for a visit it's hard to remember them being as small as your boys are right now. I'm hoping one day for them to come back this state so I can have my fishing buddies back. Neither one of them really did not want to learn how to throw a baitcaster. I don't even think they enjoyed the fishing part as much as they enjoyed the boat ride. A lot of times I would let them control the trolling motor and I would do all the fishing. Great video look forward to watching more of them.
@riccardocarbo24793 жыл бұрын
The dancing skills rival my casting skills! That cutaway got me laughing. Thanks for the fun video. I find it's easier to teach baitcasting (pretty much like you do) after there is competency with a spinning reel first, to learn the timing of release. As you said, it's a system of line, rod and lure. Fast tip action rods are going to put your margin of error on a razor's edge, so a slow rod with a relatively heavy lure with moderately hard throws are ideal. If the cast is too slow it won't activate the brakes as well and tempt a backlash. It's important that he get into the unsheltered, backlash-risky zone so that the minor(!) backlashes serve as the instant teacher to think about what to correct. It's a gradual process toward mastery but fastest if done with focus and carefulness, so short periods that don't exceed the attention span are important. Good to re-emphasize proper form so it becomes habit before the bad form does, first. The worst experience is unlearning the bad stuff while you are learning the proper way. That's much harder to teach or be learned out of. But that girl of yours casts like a boy! :) Thanks again.

Sweet. I actually handed my oldest son a baitcaster for the first time last week. Last weekend he received his own for an early birthday gift. One thing that helped is I had 30lb braid on. Thank you so much for this video. I'm brand new to baitcaster reels and having a lot of fun learning, but the part about pole load helped tremendously. I've been practicing with my new Abu Garcia Black max on a pole rated from 1/8 to 1/2 oz. weight. I was using the 1/4 and getting 0 distance, and a few bird nests. After loading up a 1/8 weight, I'm getting enough distance now I feel comfortable taking the new toy to some water. First time seeing your video, liked what I saw but I have a question. When you speak on balancing your line, rod, and lure, do you have a basic guide to this? I know there are numerous combinations to this but a basic guide would help. I grew up on cane poles and old Zebco reels. Baitcasters is what I would like to progress to. I like keeping it simple; a rod, a line, and maybe 3-5 different lures with that particular setup. Thanks for what you do. I subscribed and will take notes. Take care and God Bless.

Curious why someone who addresses every little detail that can effect casting efficiency is doing the Bait Caster Juggle ... meaning you cast with your right hand then hand the rod over to your left hand fo reel. Not bashing as I was doing the same decades ago until a friend pointed out that a left hand reel is more efficiant needing less body movement. Perhaps people think that a designated right hand reel is for people who are right handed when in actuality it is regarding which hand you want to reel with ???? I now feel awkward fishing with a "right handed" reel that envolves lots of casting. Reels with a flipping switch feature allow me to cast and engage the reel with one hand.
@TackleJunky816 жыл бұрын
I can cast with my left so I don't have to switch, but it's more comfortable to me the way I do it. My left arm is my stronger arm so I like the rod in my left hand and I'm just more accurate with the way I do it too. Reeling left hand is really awkward to me...all personal preference in my opinion.
@petertrout81405 жыл бұрын
I’m a lefty and just bought a right hand reel. Seems quite natural to cast with my left hand then reel with my right. I have more feeling with my left hand to sense a bite or what have you. Always thought that this was backwards by calling a right hand reel to reel with your right rather than to case with that hand. Thanks for the reel setup tips, been years since my Curado was stolen, and want to pick up the sport again.

4 sure he got the rod n beast it..better then me by far. Used spinning rods all my life now at 27 finally got my first bait cast dont know anything about how to use it but practice makes perfect and it really helps when good fisher men explane whats going on and why.. Luv it fresh water is a whole other ball game then salt water.....🍏
