I got my first baitcaster a few weeks ago and took it out for the first time yesterday. Thanks to this video, I had minimal issues. A few backlashes here and there but overall I felt pretty confident after a few casts. I definitely need to practice accuracy and control, but that will come I’m sure. Thanks for all of your videos dude

I've been working on just making straight cast😮😮😮😮😮. I was able to ease off the brakes, but I sometimes forget testing my lure, if I change up. I saw on one channel where a guy put tape over the reel to keep his nephew from getting a backlash. As the boy got better, he would remove the tape to get more length. I never thought of that idea😊

Tyler , once again, thank you so much for an amazing video. This is the second time I’ve watched it. I picked up a bait caster from a friend who gave up, and I think the reason he gave up is because he didn’t watch your video and understand all the important, basic steps of setting up the rod and reel. I look forward to moving behind the spinning rod and seeing how this works. Thanks so much. I’m actually at a little local pond, practicing at the moment, watching the video at the same time.

I like how Daiwa has their spool tension to where it has just a little side to side play. That’s how I setup all my reels whatever the brand. I think it’s better to use the magnetic brake rather than tension, because that puts more resistance on the line and your lure won’t go where your rod tip is pointed.

What I do sometimes when I get a backlash, instead of pulling out more line, I walk backwards until the backlash is gone then I reel in my line tight, LOL Sometimes I have to walk backwards for alot of footage. Probably looks silly but hey , it gets my line back in the reel where it should be. Thanks for this excellent video Tyler!! Happy fishing Y'all!! Update: Thankfully I don't get that many backlashes anymore. Practice does help and I have tossed out my line alot over the months! LOL

Do your spool tension first for a controlled drop, if you're new to baitcasting reels start with your brakes on the higher side, with practice you'll be able to loosen them both a bit. If you're a spin fisherman forget about the flick cast and keep your thumb lightly on the spool adding pressure to slow down and stop the lure, it helps to slightly load the rod on the backcast

Tyler, I understand you are trying to train tournament style bass fishermen. That's great. Not being a tourney enthusiast or being numbers oriented, I prefer to enjoy the fight more than you do. Water skiing a fish across the surface, then resuming casting in the same breath, well,,,,, seems like more of a job than fishing. Loved your marabou jig video with smallmouth. Now, that's more my style.

Tyler, quick question. On a spinning rod, most people cast right-handed and reel the line in with their left, so the rod never changes hands. On a baitcaster, it seems that you have to transfer from your right to left hand after each cast. Is that proper technique?

@trevorandrew8726
@trevorandrew8726 Жыл бұрын
If your tension knobs are coming off you may be fishing too light of a lure/rig. These types of issues are why people will fish weightless finesse rigs with spinning reels, because it's where the baitcaster really falls apart. It's doable for sure but if you're having to have a completely loose spool tension, it's time to pull out a spinner

@@TylersReelFishing I didn't reed the comments, just watch the film. I was not aware of this was the topic:) You covered it good in the two clips you posted. I grew up with a spinning reel and have been flyfishing for over 40 years ...and of corse I have been left hand retrive. I started to use baitcasters some 15years ago and the first one I bought was of corse a right hand LOL, the guy in the shop said it was the way it was supposed to be done. Many years later and some 25 reels later the majority is left hand. Got a few right hands though and the reason was a very good price or a collector item:) Bottom line, do what is most comfortable for you. The fish does not care if you reel right or left

Hey Tyler, I am new to bass fishing Ive been using my Spinning reel for everything and Its been going great. I want to get my first baitcaster and rod. I was thinking of going with the lews custom light rod and for a reel I am unsure, should I just get the 2nd Gen speed spool? What are your thoughts on that setup. For context I really just fish ponds in Texas

Hmm, I’d honestly just get a Mach crush or Mach jacked combo. That jacked is AMAZING. Tackle warehouse sells it right now, so enter through those links in my video description and type “jacked”

@@TylersReelFishing Yeah thats a nice combo. You are going to think I am crazy but I absolutely hate the Color Red its like a phobia I have :/ nothing I own is red haha. I really like the combo though!

I never palm my reel and dont have no issues . I use conventional baitcasters more , so hold it how I how my conventional baitcasters. So , I usually use 4 kinds of reels in 1 day of fishing . My method must work , I lost count of how many I caught on last fishing trip using baitcaster . I know I lost count after 30 . Of course , not after bass , but most always seem to be bass . Bass are to easy around here . Crappie , perch , blugill, trout and catfish are more of a challenge fish to catch here .

How can I prevent my spool from getting more line on one side than the other?

What if you take the tensioner knob all the way off, out of incompetence? I can't get it back on since the threads are so thin.

Newbie here...what advantages does a baitcaster have over a spinning reel? Is this a reel for a true beginner?
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of them, and anybody can learn, but usually a spinning reel is a “beginner” reel. Search “TylersReelFishing baitcaster” for more videos explaining how to properly use this thing

Why area baitcasters right handed? I struggle with that, I know they have started making them left handed but the majority is right handed. is there a pro to use right hand casts if I'm used to reeling in with my left? Do I just need to suck it up and figure it out lol
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing Жыл бұрын
There are plenty that are left handed! Search “TylersReelFishing baitcaster”, and you’ll find several videos of me talking about the difference between right and left… I also have a video coming out today that you are going to want to watch. It’s about this EXACT topic

Get an open face or a spin casting reel to avoid ALL these head aches. You will be able to cast further and not have to adjust ANYTHING every time you change lures, not to mention most bait casters are made to reel right handed so if you cast right handed you have to change hands to reel.

Once you learn how to use it, a baitcast reel is a much more efficient piece of equipment and it’s not even close. Don’t get stuck in your ways my friend

I'm right handed, but I got a left handed baitcaster a few years ago. This switching hands after casting business is silly, there's no reason for it and I feel much better controlling the rod in my dominant hand like I have done my entire life with spinning rods.
