It's the small tips in between the big discussion points that stuck out to me Craig's Tips That Helped Me: - If win conditions are met super quick, have a redo - switching sides off clear start and end points are ideal (add'l tips on when switching is best vs repeats or switching off time) - ideally, the coach has cues prepared and is used during each game (language mattered to Craig and used them liberally during the games to the students. real use case of calling attn live vs post-game which is an improvement area for me) - game design: if the issue is one major part, remove that part to mentally solidify the issue in students mind. Reintroduce issue and intention is damn near perma-set Thanks Josh, Craig, and Max for putting this together

This is reference to the relationship of the difficulty of the game and timing of when to implement them. Craig started with the mad dog then next game was with frames defeated (at least at the start). It really made sense to me to establish problem then removing the key issue, the frame. The second game is designed for the student to win essentially. The real takeaway is calling attention to the key issue of the mad dog then bringing the frame back in. It's almost like a rhetorical question that you put the student thru. They come into the previous game with more focus on the problem. It's the same dynamic as starting from the terminal position then working your way back up stream (ex. start with armbar extension games then move onto connection break games). At its core, it's about controlling variables. In this case, there's something to be said about starting with the problem, removing problem, then going back into it. Going up and down stream in this case. I learned from that. That was badass. Craig did a great job reminding us that the sets up of these games will differed depending on size of group. So that was good to keep in mind when working through the video. He mentioned how Max switched sides to defeat the frame, so I'm now thinking about this for my butterfly half class later today, I'll modify some games to keep in mind what Craig said here.

Wouldn't let me add this to the previous comment, so here it is separate: I don't want to come off nitpicky, but positional sparring does have constraints. Even free sparring has constraints. Every type of training has constraints. Constraints-led approach is aware of it, and it manipulates constraints according to its own principles of how movement best emerges for certain contexts or environments. CLA is going to be increasingly hard to understand if we try to focus only on where it differs with other methodologies or try to limit its extend to where it is noticeable different. In fact you should be positional sparring within CLA and it does not cease to be CLA when you do.

Anyway, I should also add that representativeness and task difficulty or only correlate to one another an not the same thing. The dial has to do with the level of representativeness of the task of the task which has to do with the number of elements it shares with the performance environment. It doesn't necessarily represent task complexity and it definitely does not represent the perceived difficulty of a task. This is a confusion I only just worked through myself so I don't expect everyone to know it. I'm trying to develop a taxonomy that helps us understand intrinsic task complexity because representative learning instruments are not specific enough on that point.

Every time someone says “Ecological approach” when talking about CLA, someone tells a small child that Santa isn’t real.
