Breaking the English language into the most common spelling patterns is an effective way to teach the connection of the sounds and the spellings to children while learning to read. This relationship between the sounds and the spellings of language is also called decoding. Decoding our language is critical to being an adept reader. Breaking the English language into the most common spelling patterns and teaching them explicitly in a clear scope and sequence is recommended. Your tips are so helpful, thanks! I teach (TESOL Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or TEFL Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in SE Asia and I am supposed to be teaching spoken English. I have had success in that and my students and teachers love it but they are not testing well in reading so I am trying to help out in that area as well. It's so difficult with only 50 mins. per week.

I know in another video you mentioned that you keep the silent e with an r as separate sounds (like hare) and when there is a vowel team followed by an r. I think I’m a little confused as to when is it one sound vs. two sounds? Currently teaching this! Absolutely love your videos!

Remember to teach flexibility. For example, if there is a vCe, try that! If it doesn’t work try another sound- like the “bossy r” if r is the consonant. You can definitely teach “are” as a new sound, but the fewer sounds the better for struggling readers and they may already know a_e and it sounds soooo close to long a, we choose to not teach a whole new sound. Another example of flexibility is with vowels- we teach try short sound then long sound. We always end with “does the word make sense in the sentence?” That will bring them back to reading and meaning making. Hope that helps? Flexibility is so critical for readers to apply.

The only thing that is a challenge is this video is that the sound of r is NOT /er/./r/ is not /er/. Say rat with out the /at/.. It is not /er/
