Hi Rebekah, You definitely should still use Slides for lessons. A website is just a way to further customize the place where students go to access information, but Sites isn't functional as a place to deliver lessons, if that makes sense. I really appreciate your great videos and your generosity of allowing your slideshows to be copies as exemplars. In term of the issues with the docs linked within the slideshow, have you tried changing the portion of the last few characters (/edit?usp=sharing) of the url linking back to the doc to (/copy)? This will automatically make a copy for your student. Then they just need to attach it to the assignment!

Hello Sam, many thanks for the excellent tutorial. As you say, it does appear to be one of the best ways of creating an independent study document. I have used your document as a template to create a hyperdoc for my students and I am gradually getting it to come together. Please, can I ask if you have any experience of designing/running/delivering, hyperdocs, on the Canvas learning platform?
@NewEdTechClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, as long as you have Google Drive synced to Canvas, you should be able to create a separate copy for each student to edit directly. As far as creating them, you could still still that in Google Slides as well. You might also be interested in checking out my upcoming live demo and q & a this Thursday at 6pm, which will be all about designing/running/delivering HyperDocs!
@lesliehancock66934 жыл бұрын
Perhaps a silly question... I'm confused about the process of pushing the slide presentation out to students. I am a college professor and do not use Google Classroom. We utilize Canvas. But, I love Google Drive and use it A LOT with my classes. So, do I create the Slides presentation with all my desired links? Then, do I just share the slide presentation with students as a "view only" via a link in Canvas? Finally, do they hit "present" and proceed through the slides? I just felt like I was missing a step. Thanks!
@NewEdTechClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Leslie, What's different about Google Classroom is that it has built-in coding that allows you to make a copy of a single Slides presentation for each student. As far as I know Canvas doesn't have that option. In that case I do think your best option will be to create a View only document and then include all the links to your documents. Then, go into each linked document and change the back end of the url to say "copy" rather than "view" or "edit." That will force students to make a copy of each of the documents you link, and they'll be able to edit them as an individual document. The only caveat is that they'll also have to share the document back to you. Since you teach college students, getting them to remember to do that hopefully won't be as challenging as with younger students!

This is so inspiring! How do you link back to the google classroom discussion question?
@NewEdTechClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bethany, thanks! So if you violate my number one rule for organizing GC, which is not to post assignments on the stream, then you can actually get a direct link back to an assignment by clicking on the three dots next to the assignment when it's on the stream. Otherwise you'll just have to link back to the assignments page in GC.
@richardpalmer19674 жыл бұрын
An excellent well presented tutorial. Many thanks. I'm just in the process of compiling a hyperdoc using a similar format to the one you are presenting. A few teething problems in sharing documents. I don't quite understand the placing of a link to the notetaker at the bottom of the slide @5.35. Would you not end up having the links of the whole class in this box or is each student given a copy of the hyperdoc...... if you see what I mean?
@NewEdTechClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, yeah, there are definitely complications with creating, sharing, and handing in HyperDocs. Look out for some upcoming content with HyperDocs tips next week, but in the meantime, you're right that the only way linking back to the document will work is if a student has an individual copy of the HyperDoc.
@rickpalmer33404 жыл бұрын
New EdTech Classroom Hello Sam, instead of asking a student to make a copy could you “force a copy” I.e. deleting /...... edit at the end of the linked URL and replacing it with /copy? Students will then be presented with an instruction to make a copy before they process. They would, however, still have to share the document for assessment.

@NewEdTechClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Johana, Sure, I think you could, but you'd want them to do super simple, and you might want to just directly embed a graphic organizer into the HyperDoc so they don't have to deal with document management. That being said, you might want to look at Nearpod because their lessons are basically set up like HyperDocs except they don't require students to go elsewhere to access the other programs as they are all embedded in the Nearpod lesson.

How do you keep them accountable? Sorry for all the questions but you have me so focused on creating but wondering about accountability. Thank you!
@NewEdTechClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Katrina! You can hyperlink anything as long as what you are linking to can generate a link, if that makes sense (so the ppt would need to be uploaded into your Drive folder or would need to live somewhere else online versus just on your computer). For Elementary- maybe 6th, I would just have them take notes directly onto the Slides because document management otherwise is a nightmare. I made that switch mid-spring b/c it was too much of a hassle to remind students to share their documents with me/link them back to the document/or turn them in via GC. There are just too many steps involved for younger students. Plus, it's much easier to just jump right into their Slides and check to see if they've been doing their work that way.

I don't know if others have commented, but you can hyperlink a document you want to share with students by chancing the word "sharing" in the URL to the word "copy". Why don't you make your initial goal to master the basic Google Classroom features? Sam has at least one great KZbin video on how to effectively use the G.C. features. That was how I "dove in" last Spring. I think that was best: first mastering the G.C. basics and now this year I am ready to expand: to add some companion platforms to my G.C. mix. What is readily available just within the G.C. ethos: (1) students can make comments (to teacher, to one another, to a question posed) in the "stream" page, (2) in the "classwork" page, students can: answer a question [various ways, features to manipulate here, (3) open and read a doc, (4) open and interact with any variety of attached media you posted as a resource, (5) open, copy, complete, and submit a Google doc (or sheet, I think), (6) open and complete a Google Form, (6) open and complete a Google Form/Quiz - this option being self-graded and automatically sent to individual students w/o needing to make copies for each student or them copying the original before completing and submitting. There are probably other features I never played with yet. Warning: if you merely send out a Google Doc w/o first making a copy for each student, then the work each does will become interposed over the work of the others (or erase their work); for this reason you will need to make individual copies if you want to receive independent work in Google Doc assignments. I barely used this latter option, so maybe another teacher can better comment on its use. I wish you well! But, yeah...starting with the tips in this video would not be the easiest place to start. Get your feet wet first; become acquainted with the basic Google Classroom features before moving into add-on (external) tools/platforms. Also, if you use what remains of summer, you can have the best of both worlds: familiarity with G.C. ethos and begin with the hyperdoc Google Slides lesson planning idea (which is brilliant!).

Hi, I totally understand! I agree with what Jennifer said below. The best approach would be to start with a basic set up in Google Classroom and then build from there. You don't even need to add new programs to start, just use the commenting function in GC to keep it nice and simple. A HyperDoc is definitely a more advanced technique that you can fold in later.

I have some students with reading difficulties. Are there any supportive add-os or additional ides that will read the hyper docs? Thank you so much for your videos they have been incredibly supportive and helpful. Adjusting to distance learning and having students with learning differences has been hard.

Thanks for your question! I definitely understand as I have the same issue with many of my students. I would definitely recommend the Read & Write extension to help students with text to speech and speech to text. chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google-chro/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd?hl=en-US
