I’m not a teacher, just a home learner in the UK. So I want to thank you, Janna, for taking the time to post videos like this which help people like me. If I lived anywhere near you, I’d be begging for lessons with you!

So when you say 2:38 “subject” are you referring to with the theme is????
@JannaWilliamson4 ай бұрын
"subject" is a fancy word for "theme" used particularly in Baroque contrapuntal music, like inventions and fugues.

@@JannaWilliamson so the translation in this video would be then: theme, development, then recapitulation?
@JannaWilliamson4 ай бұрын
@@pequenioedgarito3067 no, those are terms used for sonata form, not contrapuntal Baroque works.

Lovely video. I prefer the harpsichord but I'd definitely be happy if you were my teacher!

My two kids have decided not to do Bach anymore for their judged pieces unless there is a digital piano with a harpsichord setting or a harpsichord because my son has been marked down because a judge didn’t like that he didn’t put in a lot of dynamics. Since these were written before the piano displaces the harpsichord the dynamic situation is debatable.

@@Toutuu98 I'm sorry your son had that experience. He should do his research and listen to a lot of recordings and decide how he likes to play it best! Listening to Andras Schiff, Angela Hewitt, and others, can show just how expressively Bach can be played.

So the first subject is T-3-T-5-T and then scalar descent down a fourth, up a step, down a fourth, up a step and then down a fourth to the tonic. I think that playing an Invention is years away for me. But my teacher doesn't mind that I'm playing hands seperate and transposing this into other keys. Merci for these lessons.

One could argue that the subject is only the first six notes (up to the high tonic) and that the notes moving down are a “countersubject” - I have heard other teachers say this, and that’s fine too. I like for my students to hear the complete movement up and down over the two measures.

I used to be able to play this... very ham-handedly, and way too fast, but I could get through it.

Nice. The way I teach the FM invention is to set my student down in front of my clavichord.
