Thank you so much for posting this. I have used it to teach my daughter who is 5 and now she can add and minus like a pro. I'm always looking for ways to make her learning fun and she loves this technique. She stopped using the playdough quickly after learning the method though and now is using her memory to recall. While she doesn't appear to have any learning challenges. This method was by far the most fun for us. She'll be six shortly and is less anxious in her lessons at school. This is good - it's a strategy I developed for myself. My son is now 5 and starting to 'pencil' tap these spots to avoid putting his pencil down and using fingers. Fingers are like training wheels on bikes, it's best to learn to ride on a walking bike and skip those training wheels altogether.

This is a really amazing system. Thanks so much for sharing this. My child was struggling with basic math and using her fingers, it was a slow and cumbersome approach. I wanted her to learn some long addition and subtraction this summer and be more confident with her more basic skills too. I think that this is a great solution. She got it right away. Ok so this is my story of y am watching this....i am 12 years old I know how to add,subtract,divided,multiply and more my parents got divorced and so my mom found a man that didn't have a kid at all but my dad is looking for a gf and he found one that had a 2 year old daughter......I haven't seen her physically the lil girl but I totally fell in love with her....tbh she doesn't even know I am alive but I have big hopes that one day am gonna meet her and teach her all I know to her because she got all my heart I honestly hate kids but this lil girl just ughhh so pretty and I love her so back to the point of this comment I want to teach her how to add at 3 or 4 or whenever I meet her because I want her to be smart that's the reason y I am watching the video....btw am SUPER excited to know that there is a possibility for me to have a little sister and to be a big sister❤❤

Touch Math. This was all the rage several years back. I went to the workshops and made all of the "props" for Touch Math. I think it is good in that pretty soon the kids don't need the dots, they just know that they are there. However, I still don't have a problem with kids using fingers. Teach them to use them the correct way. The ladies who started Touch Math also had a phonics program called "Little Mr. Big Ears". The two workshops were usually together. Also, "Souper Sounder" was part of their programs. I used parts of those programs and still do.

What's wrong with using fingers? I can touch, feel and see my fingers - they are also multi-sensory. This might be harder to use for problems presented orally. Good use of fingers is also more logical - I can understand why five fingers and two fingers is seven, but I cannot understand why you don't go back over all the dots in seven, and why there are four dots in total. The elevator story might be nice but it is not mathematical. I think good teaching of fingers and dice/domino patterns could achieve the same thing, or better. The reliance on this numeral form could lead to mistakes - e.g. if I tried to add 14 (horizontally) I might try counting on 1 and 4 (5 dots) in total, whereas if I do it on my fingers, I can see clearly that I need a different strategy as I don't have 14 fingers. Might have good results in this video with a very compliant child after 15 minutes, but same with many strategies after 15 minutes.

Hi nettsobeth, I know you made this comment like a year ago but I felt the need to comment so other people feeling the same way could see my comment. This form of math is meant to be taught to children who have a difficult time with regular math systems. Whether that be people who struggle with the a mental illness or simply children who have fallen behind. It can be hard to see why a new system is needed when you fully understand the one already in place. I teach several students with math issues who can't use traditional finger math because they make mistakes with it. (for example adding 7 and 6 with only 10 fingers avaliable to them often leads to them putting only the 1 and 2 fingers into use therefore adding up to only 3 instead of 13). This form of counting makes it easier for them to still be able to see the numbers, and count up with them, without having to worry about the possibility of making the same type of error. For some children, specifically children who struggle with dyslexia and dyscalculia, numbers can often get turned around or read in places they are not. This type of breakdown helps to stop that confusion by getting the child to look at each number and interact with it one at a time.

You used a big child for this exercise/ demonstration. She should be like 9 or 10 yrs old. In this case, it is very easy to teach her this method. It works but takes more than one time. It takes days or weeks for a 5 or 6 yrs old to get this.
