I'm working with a thoroughbred that gets tight. I ride with a western wade saddle. The Cheyenne roll and night latch have come in handy. My mentor helped me with her restart. He told me to ride outside and ride her out in open country as much as possible. And for all the people who say go bitless, it doesn't matter what you put on your horse's head, it matters what you put in it. Good video. You are right on.

Maggie Ann - yes. Before Joseph Newcomb videos - I had never witnessed a "Show" person who was actually kind to & thoughtful about their horse. I rode Hunter/Jumpers but am now also mesmerized by dressage. I think I just loved jumping so much that I didn't want to do anything else, other than bareback trail rides. My loss.

Yeah was saying this to a friend. We hack out everywhere. Gallop over stubble and long canters on grassy paths. Can be out 4 hours. My horse was v spooked by cows and sheep... but not anymore!! He trusts me so much more when we together conquer his fears. Creates such a bond. Love it! Great message..get out of that school and discover the countryside but do wear high visibility for safety. Happy days.

This video reminds me of the time I went to ride my horse in a field where there was at least a hundred canada gooses. I ended up getting off at some point because I felt like it was getting too much for him, and then I got back on and everything went well. This happened a year ago and my horse used to be a VERY spooky horse. But I've always tried to push out of our comfort zone and he is now very calm. I wondered why he changed so much in a year but after watching this video, I understand that I was just doing the right things to build our confidence! Thanks you, I love your content you are such an inspiration!
@gingercox64686 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Doing stuff can be snorty but imperative to teaching confidence. Go everywhere, do everything, just you two. No reason to rush. Like the trick to getting them used to a strange stall. Lead them in...and out a couple times. They see it as been there, done that. I was at a boarding barn. When they rode, it was trails, I like to start out in the ring, warmup get the bumps out assessing his or her energy level. Then hit the trails where u pick ur way through a rocky hillside. Then opens up for a little canter. Thanks for the video.

Bravo! I know so many dressage riders who wouldn't dare walk on a basic trail let alone wander around suburbia! No matter what your discipline, whether you show or just ride for fun, getting out and about outside of the ring and off the property is so necessary. So many people disregard that and wonder why their horse has meltdowns. Love watching your content and I always learn a little something too! Looks like your always having fun too which is another thing people forget about 😂Cheers! 😘

Your are all so very lucky to have what we in England would call, really safe tracks to ride. Here, if you go hacking, you are usually on a tarmac road sharing it with lorries, cars, cyclists, buses and any other vehicle. None of whom have any respect for horses or patience for riders. How lovely to have purpose built tracks. Wish we had !

I live in Massachusetts. The trails are dwindling, but we do still have them. I have been riding for 55 years, and when I was a kid I could go through three towns and only have to cross 2 roads. It was amazing! There was an area in the woods that was a beautiful field with a ring, and we would meet after school and have pretend horse shows. All my friends had horses. It was the norm. So sad how things have changed. But my best place on Earth is still in the woods on my horse. We just had a glorious Autumn trail riding season. I am in the ring for spring and summer, and when the bugs are gone, I'm trial bound!

I got my stallion from rural Montana with nothing but some rabbits and predators for miles. He had never had a halter on his head or seen a vet or farrier, never even seen a tree, much less been exposed to traffic or ridden in a trailer. He's a brave little guy and insisted on having the window cracked open in order to watch the traffic speed past with 18 wheelers almost within touching distance. He got slightly wild eyed but stood quietly. It was a heavy thunderstorm that badly frightened him since he had previously experienced a close call with a tornado. We pulled over and I stayed in the trailer with him so he wouldn't be alone and afraid. Even that frightened he kept his head although he hid in a back corner until he had company which in itself is a bit surprising since he was largely undomesticated and had known me less than a week. He has turned out to be very forward and excited about exploring new places. I'm sure the extreme changes in his life must have been a bit overwhelming at first. I am impressed with the courage he has shown through everything he has experienced. He does worry about things that move in trees but doesn't lose his mind over them. We are currently working on that as well as getting him to understand that cars are not there for him to catch up to and race with. Overall, I'd say he's a pretty good horse.

When my horse was 3 and just being broke to ride, I would often lead him on "trail-walks" up into the hills. He loved it. He learned to cross water, wooden bridges, an old cow hide from a dead steer, cement ditches, logs, etc. Even though he was a show horse (hunter), I still took him trail-riding all over CA -- Griffith Park, the beach, the mountains, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, etc. He hated the monotony of the schooling ring, but loved jumping & loved trail rides. We also did lots of jumping out on the trail, too. Sometimes we'd end up on trails that were a little sketchy to ride on, so I'd dismount and lead him to make it easier for him. Most of my trail-riding was done alone - it's the best way to get away from humans for a while!

I don't see very many shod heel first landings, so Joseph, you must have a very talented farrier that, well, nailed it!!!!. So beautiful to witness. Your horse must have super strong lateral cartilages/digital cushions, wow! Riding properly with horse through the body and heel first landings on all four--- that is quite an accomplishment! And I haven't even spoken a word yet about your message in building confidence. I just found you minutes ago-- not much time theses days to browse videos and still keep horses ridden. Awesome!!!🌷He's loving that, just taking it all in. I hope you stayed on him opening the gate. The curb under the overpass would be a perfect opportunity for both horse and rider to perfect haunches in, shoulder in, and straightness. YOU really learn the feel of what YOU need to do. The horse already knows these movements, NATURALLY!!😉 Those hills are perfect for learning to feel what it's like when your horse is truly under himself while going up them, using that engine and back. With all of that, you'll be amazed at the quality of the movements in the ring. Relaxed happy rider, relaxed happy horse. The movements will be so supple. Like smooth butter.😘 Everyone make it a great blessed day!!🌷

Thank you for the pointers of backing the horse uphill a bit to make it easier to get up into the saddle and using the curb as a mounting block, that was valuable to me as a novice. Also really glad you emphasize to do different things with horses, that has always been my idea as well - too many people use the horse just as exercise equipment in the arena - very sad! It's call "desensitizing"your horse to everything which makes the horse allot safer to ride in the long run. I was taking lessons on a horse that one day my instructor said for me not to get on the horse until she picks up the plastic that was on the ground or the horse would run with me on her back. That was the first sign I got, then a person was working on the fence and the horse had to literally stop and the person had to look up to the horse to show the horse she was just a person and the big bad wolf, LOL. That was the last straw for me, at that point in was already freaking out. I was planning on taking that horse to my first jumping show, I stopped the lesson from that day and never went back. Now I'm going back with my own horse, I feel allot safer on them then any other horse that has not been train properly to keep the rider safe no matter what at all cost.

We are out at least 4 times on one week. She is 11 years and still afraid of many things.

A. river, go up dirt bank, enter narrow, dark, low ceiling concrete, graffiti filled tunnel that went under the 5 freeway, semis roaring overhead, into Griffith Park with people, bands, joggers, perverts, rattlers,, to trails up the mountains, hearing elephants from the zoo,... Rode alone several times a week, as well as dressage lessons from Kamila Dupont... Ok, so now at 65, I'm just getting back into riding with a spooky, spoiled, 14 y. o.
