Hi Sissela, thanks for this inspiring video! I sometimes struggle to tell stories through my photos, but this is something that I'm always looking for. Some time ago I decided to stop "shooting nouns" (a person, a bird, that place...) and start "shooting adjectives or adverbs" (hope, kindness, melancholy....). It was nice to see that your video goes very well in the same direction. And congrats for the beautifully made portraits. Kind regards, Claudio

Thanks Sissela. Great video with excellent advice. I've been doing model shoots for about a year now, and the common theme that models tell me is that often the photographer doesn't come with any ideas and simply wants them to model. Clearly this isn't going to work in creating story as the model has nothing to work with. A tip that I have found is to go to shoots prepared with resources that list emotions and groups of emotions. This I have found really helps models to understand a vibe which can be explored through the shoot. 😀

So, first of all, I am happy to be here. I really loved this video of yours. It was very well put together and helpful to me. I am a filmmaker at heart and also do photography (because they go hand in hand due to their similar nature). My current challenge is building an engaging website for a videography and photography business. But in order to do that, I need to build more content. While I am a bit at odds with what kind of photography and videography I would like to do (wedding, model, business promo, etc), I understand that in order to have a good formula, I’d have to throw something on this empty canvas so I can have something to work with and trim some fat off in areas in order to have my art become more lean and sturdy. So I am currently starting off with making a documentary for an artist meet up group (this is my videography element) and I desperately try to find models, starting with my friends (my photography element). Other than that, it would be cool (if you haven’t already) make a video on how to best direct your subjects as I encounter this challenge with both photography and videography. And while I’ve directed a whole short film before, it tends to be a bit different for an “on the go” directing method (meeting a model in passing and telling them how to pose when I’d like to use them to express a mood of a shot or still image). Plus, I always like to just be re-informed.
