The easiest way is to get underneath your car and put your phone on your gas tank. Turn the recording on sit in the car turn it do that a few times get out, playback the footage, put it up to your ear, your phone and see if you can hear the fuel pump turning on.

I usually don’t comment but you may have just helped me figure out the problem on my dads olds silhouette. Stalls throws a code for a MAF clear the code and it starts right back up. Changed MAF twice changed CPS twice n still doing this. I always thought that sound was the air pump in back because it was super loud and only came on after I clear the code. Super weird to explain

Try jumping with another battery, to see if that will give it enough of a jolt to start, rather than hitting the tank. It sound like you will need a new fuel pump soon, unless the problem is a corroded or loose connection.

2012 GM truck 5.3 vortec. The past month when starting on a cold start it cranks once but slow to fire up misfiring and sputtering then levels out and is fine after 30 secs to a minute. Fine driving. No engine light. Accelerates fine can stomp gas and takes off fast. Gas mpg normal no decrease. . Last few days its gotten worse on the cold start and took two tries to start today and does the sputtering, misfiring then smooth like normal rest of time driving and throughout the day when starting again. Could this be dirty/ failing throttle body or sensor? Dirty/failing Mass Airflow Sensor. Would a bad fuel pump throw a code and cause poor acceleration, etc? Im hoping its not the fuel pump.

your fuel line might not be holding fuel from draining when not run for a long period of time, which would cause air to be in the line, causing sputtering, until it clears out.

OK folks this is just a test to see if the fuel pumps motor is able to run or runs at all. It is not a test to verify the Fuel Pump is working! There is a huge difference between a fuel pump motor running and a fuel pump actually working. The difference is you have a specific fuel pressure when the Fuel Pump is WORKING. The only REAL test for a Fuel Pump is to check the pressure.

sounds like the typical symptoms of a vacuum leak. Check your connections, and especially the condition of the hoses, which split and crack due to the heat of the engine.

there is a Schrader valve on most fuel rails. If not, just take the fuel line off, and put it into a container, to see if it flows.

Those engines are notorious for low oil pressure in the variable valve timing module or the cam chain may have snapped. If one cam turns and the other doesn’t, that’s why yours won’t run. There are dozens of videos on the engine problems.

On my VW Polo 2004 1.2, 47 kw I have a problem possibly with fuel pump.Yesterday when I tred to start the engine I didn't hear it's sound like usual, car cranked and started and just worked for a few seconds and turned off by itself. I tryed to turn it on again, it cranked and it didn't not start. Later that day I came again to see if something has changed and I could hear fuel pump makig that noise and the car started and worked just fine. I turned it on and off a couple of times and every time it seemed to work fine. Later that day I decidet to see again whats happening and this time it didn't work (same story as first time). Every time pump doesn't do its job I can hear click under the dashboard so I concluded that the relay is fine, and I checked fuse, it is fine also. I just checked If can hear the pump and now I can hear it. So this is happening in circles from yesterday. Does this mean that I should change the pump or there could be another problem? Should I check for something else? (I would not like to buy part that I don't need)

Sometimes a worn ignition switch can be intermittent contact. I would put a fuel pump gauge on to see if it has pressure when it does not run to see if it is a fuel or electrical problem. If it is a fuel problem, then jump start it, and see if it starts working with the extra amps, and if so, it is your fuel pump going bad.

Today, I connected a DIY gauge (just manometer and a hose) directly to the fuel pump and checked the pressure. It was about 2.1 bar, and it didn't drop. (Is this a little low?) Car still works fine.

Maybe you still have some water in your tank, that comes into play when your tank is not full. Try filling the tank again.

kate peter how do you know it is water in the tank ...if you filled up with gas then this issue happened....i would check fuel filter first then fuel pump after that fuel lines and injectors ....sounds like the gas stirred up sediment that forms at the bottom of the cars fuel tank to me ....but i could be wrong this usually is uncommon but happens after a fill up ....as-long as you have no check service light on check fuel first “” Excessive”” Water in gas today is extremely uncommon because of ethanol “”10% about”” in the gas ...still can happen but not to the extent your having and cause the issues to what your saying ....so check your entire fuel system first! What you are saying, is that you do not have a fuel delivery problem, so look for other more common reasons like a vacuum leak, or a dirty Mass Air Flow denser, or the Idle Air Control.

You need to hook up a fuel pump pressure gauge to monitor what is happening for sure. Heat can expand or freeze up armatures, points, relay switches, etc., so they separate or no longer make a good connection. If it continues to work after it cools off, then this would be your problem, which would then need to be located. There are many simple things to check, like mass air flow sensor, or idle air control, etc

That sounds easy to fix, if just running out of gas is the real problem, and not something else that happened instead. If it did just run out of gas, then you should be able to get it to start with starting fluid, if the battery is not run down. Running out of gas can cause a plugged filter, or a stuck fuel pump, from sucking the sediments in the bottom of the tank.

That is hard to answer, without more information. Did it start up again right away, or did it start up again after sitting for awhile. If that is the case, then it is most likely a bad fuel pump that quits when it gets hot, or a fuel filter plugging up, which will not let a enough fuel through it, to run very long at higher RPM. If it did not start again at all, even with a jump from another car after at least an hour, the it could most anything else. It would be more helpful to know if it did it just one time, or has happened before.

If the alternator was bad, it would let the battery run down, which does not seem to be the case. A bad fuel pump will quit working when it get hot, but will start working again after it cools down. You did not say how long before it starts again. If it starts up again immediately, then the fuel pump is probably alright. If it quits running at stop signs, or when at idle, then it is most likely a vacuum leak.

Heat can change the function of many things on your car, due to expansion of contacts. As long as your car starts, it would hard to locate the problem without a lot of testing. Eventually it may get worse, and make it easier to pinpoint the problem.

Could be many things, but the most common for your year model would be a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump relay switch, bad fuel pump, or worn out ignition switch or a bad connection. To check if fuel delivery is a problem, simply try some starting fluid to give it the fuel needed to start. If it is the ignition switch, or a bad connection, you would need to test the hot wire that goes to the fuel pump, or hot wire the fuel pump wire, to see if it works.

It may also be stuck, from sitting around unused, or has worn out moving parts. You can try to bang on the bottom of the tank with a hammer or something, to vibrate it loose (not hard enough to knock a hole in it), or jump it with another battery or charger, to give it more power to start turning.

I have had that short piece of hose between the cyinder & the pump be split lengthways, which you loss pressure. Which i think was caused by ethanol fuel. This is my opinion about ethanol.

if ur fuel pump is bad just let all the air out of ur back tires and floor the engine in reverse if ur tires fall completely off if the rims u need to change just ur fuel filter and then u should be ready for normal daily driving

Try starting with starting fluid. If it starts, then you have a fuel delivery problem.

Then it is running, but that is not 100% that it is actually pumping fuel, but in most all cases it is.

If you are listening at the fill tube why does the person turning the key have to have everything quiet (putting seat belt on)? Why not do the second way while somebody is doing the first way and eliminate the 2 step process. Of course if the result doesn't tell you if it's bad or not, what is the point of doing those tests anyway.

You fuel pump is fine, if your car starts and runs. I do not know what you mean by giving it gas. Do you mean stepping on the petal, using starting fluid, or putting more gas ion the tank.

THat only tells you if the pump is priming, not if it has pressure
