How to tell if that's leather or not?

A quick tip on how to tell if something is leather. We'll use the sofa in this example. It can help save you a costly mistake and money at the same time. Please use this in addition to the smell and press test to tell from the pattern.
Note: If it doesn't smell like leather it's likely not leather. If you pressure on it a few times and it cracks, it's not leather. Leather reacts differently with grain patterns.
I'm not an expert but I learned the hard way and was taken advantage of by the furniture store.
Full-grain leather is best then Top-grain leather is quite similar. Genuine leather then split grain (suede) leather.
Links that may explain better:

www.buckskinleather.com/leath...
Bonded leather is not leather that's just a marketing name. Bonded leather is on some sides or backs of the sofa. See and feel the difference before purchasing that sofa.
It's simple and easy. If you have other methods please also share them in the comments.
If you like the video, please help with a thumbs up so others can watch this video and leave a comment if helps others. thanks.

I have a fake leather sofa that does that spider web thing. So I don't think that's a valid 'leather test"
@SwankeyMonkey
@SwankeyMonkey 8 жыл бұрын
You are right, his "spiderweb test" is not an accurate way to test for leather because Bonded Leather (the Pringles of leather) will give near the same spiderweb look. Bonded Leather eventually breaks down when exposed to sweat, oils, UV and cracks along those "webs" and sometimes pieces break off exposing the fabric webbing support. You have to have a trained eye to spot the webbing of real Leather, and the crinkle of Bonded Leather.

We just purchased a sofa made with gel leather, we asked the sales associate if it was real leather and they said it was, now that we have the furniture home, after one day of having it I have noticed a very small spot where the fabric flaked off (we re gusseing from our 4 years old toenail), I'm starting to get worried that this is not real leather

This test is inaccurate, what you are seeing are wrinkles on high impact areas (areas that are used a lot). Like the arm rest, back rest and seats. The parts that are not being rested on such as the back and sides of the chairs and sofas don't get these wrinkles. Much like human skin lines form over time due to ageing and use.

@@zaydengestures1797 are you seriously going to continue calling me out for absolutely no reason whatsoever. The comment section is lengthy and ROBUST with others contributing, questioning, and learning the validity of a "spider web test" which been taught in institutions for LITERALLY centuries. The leather world is a fascinating and seemingly overwhelming place but if others like yourself would leave your prejudices behind and consider leather being in absolutely every element of our lives; Leather clothes, leather houses, leather cars, leather roads, Imagine a flesh world where everything is covered in SKIN!!! It all begins with the spiderweb test, it's the first step. Will you join me?

You can try to do water test on a real leather and faux leather. You will notice that the real leather absorb water much faster than the faux leather:) thats because the faux leather has a plastic on top of it which means the water sits on the surface of the "leather"
@MisterFuturtastic
@MisterFuturtastic Жыл бұрын
I heard some leather has a finish though and it will prevent water from being absorbed too.

+Gunay Kayahan If it's peeling then it's "bonded" leather. It's made from all the shavings and scraps from real leather being processed ground up with different glues and binders to make a synthetic looking leather. Looks nice on day one, and looks like shit a few months down the line.

Krzysztof Stankiewicz real leather you see a star pattern or what is better known as spidering. On the fakes it doesn't do this. It just indents or depresses on the point of contact. Their are no lines that emanate from the point of depression that resembles a spider's many legs spreading out from all sides.

Very informative. However, full grain leather is actually the best. Rarely furniture is made out of it since it could have surface imperfections. Top grain leather has the imperfections and grain sanded out, and then they stamp a new faux grain on it. Still good leather, just not quite as strong and durable.

Leather is a real minefield with so many misleading terms.The worst being genuine leather. This is the lower half when the leather is split, so its surface is sanded and polished, rather than the outer surface of the hide, Put simply, it is what is trimmed off the back of the expensive 'top grain' hide and has only a fraction of the strength and wear resistance. All leather is completely smooth after the hair is removed and the surface is polished. The grain effect is then produced by rolling the material with high pressure hot rollers. In reality this surface is applied to the skins that are full of blemishes and scars. For a guarantee of a quality product, you need either full or top grain leather with a smooth surface. Avoid bonded leather at all costs, it is simply the dust from the manufacturing process mixed with PVC and rolled into sheets, (the leather equivalent of chipboard timber). About its only sensible use is for car dashboards where proper leather tends to crack due to the heat of sunlight through the windscreen and wear resistance is not required..

Dashboards in cars trimmed in leather have chrome fre ore shrunk leather, tanned differently to cope with high UV and temperatures found under the windscreen area. Standard seat leather, as you say, will crack and pull away from the substrate

@jameswade979
@jameswade979 6 жыл бұрын
ben moore sometimes the do use it as a by product like you described but a lot of the time it is a co product and in India where they produce leather they put chilli in the cows eyes and skin them alive. Evan if it is a by products like you described it is still animal exploitation, animals are not here for us to use. Also put this in a human context would it be ok to to use a dead persons skin as a chair? Animal exploitation is wrong.
