This method definitely works. I used my since deceased scorpions shell to test the efficiency of the UV protection of the sunglasses and I saw a significant drop in the shells illuminance when using the sunglasses to block it. Super Helpful!

I got a pair of Blue Light blocking glasses made from an Optician. When I got home the first thing i wanted to do was this test with my cheap UV light. The lens seemed to not block any of the UV light! Objects would still glow with the UV light going through the lens. I was upset because I thought for sure these glasses don't have UV protection. I took the glasses back and the Optician sent them out to two labs and both tests resulted in the lens having UV protection. The Optician even let me test them in her office with a UV Photometer and lo and behold they were blocking 98% UV! So weeks later I was still skeptical about my new Blue Light blocking glasses so I went to another Optical store and their machine also said they block 98% UV. So after my experience with my new Blue Light blocking glasses, I don't think the UV light test on lens is as accurate as we make it out to be.

Thats correct. It really depends on the power of the UV flash light. Most sunglasses have UV 400 blocking filter (altough plastic lenses block even more because of the material). And even if the lamp is declared for 400 nm it perhaps limits over 400 nm. So it is not very accurate. My sunglasses did fail the Uv flash light test (glass lenses uv400), but testing uv index under the sun they let in 0,0 uv in very intense uv index.

It also depends on wave length of the UV light, not every UV light is of same wave length.

I'm sorry but... are you confused? Blue light is not UV. UV is ultraviolet. This is light that normally cannot be seen by human eyes.

Cool tip. I tested a few of my sunglasses, and my clear glasses with both a UV LED flashlight and an older tube style black light and a $20 bill. The clear glasses didn't stop either light (as expected). The sunglasses still allowed the bill strip to glow with the LED flashlight, but not when using the black light tube... I also heard UV lamps only emit UVA, so you'd have to find a different way to test UVB?
