If someone says to me "everyone is a bit autistic" I always reply with "everyone is a bit neurotypical but it doesn't mean that I am neurotypical." If they say I don't look autistic, I ask them (nicely) what they think autism looks like. It's a conversation starter and a great chance to educate how one person with autism can be very different to another person with autism.

I appreciate the nuance on self-advocacy and disclosure.

Whenever I've tried to explain the autism spectrum to people, it starts off as a line, that becomes a circle, that becomes a 360-degree/3d pulsating radar!

Urrgghh ''high-functioning autism" 🙈 Yes I've been married, yes I have a child, yes I work (part time) but autism and adhd create huge challenges in my life. I hate it when people tell me I'm 'high-functioning'.

Hope you're keeping well. I'm gradually receiving support around being Autistic & thinking about how I may say it.

Personally I hardly ever have to tell people that I’m autistic, because our school pretty small and everyone knows me as “the autistic girl” I don’t really like that label, because people kinda assume I’m dumb or they baby talk me and it’s annoying. I believe it’s because I have the tendency to meltdown and I often go nonverbal and I sometimes wear my ear defenders

i thought the law says that a person can disclose when applying for a job, and there should be appropriate measures in place to support them. I'm sorry you haven't always found good workplaces. and thee places frankly have been illegal as much as unethical.

When we told friends of ours on one occasion, the response was 'everyone is a bit autistic' I didn't respond. This was an ex teacher 😳 lack of understanding completely. But, not someone who would listen to reasoning either. Never mind ☺️

I might start a volunteer work in a thrift store and they call to me on Tuesday. Should I tell about my Autism before the phone call with email or during the phone call?

It's completely up to you and what you feel is most comfortable :) it could even be after you start the role, whatever time feels right to you. I'd probably wait until the phone call and see if I can fit it into conversation during the phone call, or I would tell them after the phone call but that's just me. It will be fine whatever you choose! 😊
