How to tell the year of your Farmall by casting letters

I have a Farmall M with a casting code of 2*11*X can anyone tell me what year it is?

1939 and early 1940 M's (4-digit serial numbers) have the serial also stamped into the frame rail of the tractor.

good day. I'm in my 60's grew up with IH knew about serial nos. 501, never knew about casting. so can tell me more about it also I jump the gun on other video about Farmall M having M& W hand clutch having live power. I live in Ont. Canada never heard of live power up here on M & W-6. also looking at many videos a super H/TA thanks.

They went to 1958 with using the letters on the casting codes. And started over with A again in 55 until 58. In 1951 they use U and W .On your 350 they were probably using up parts of what they had left over. Ive got a 1950 my that according to the casting codes is a Super M but is labeled a regular M . IH was know for using up parts before the next model. Some of the last farmall C's had c-123's in them. Great video and understanding the casting codes and part number system IH used is awesome

I thought W was 1952. We have 2 1952 WD-9s and the casting codes on both are all W, I'm sure about that. They were built at Milwaukee Works, not Farmall Works like most of the rest of the tractors were at that time, so that might make a difference, although the rest of the 9 series tractors we have seem to be consistent with the rest of the tractors.

The serial tag read that it was a farmall M but the engine was a super M Engine , rear end front bolster and all were Super M . I read that some of the later M's started using super M parts. Kinda of a odd tractor. Ive read up on it and its crazy but its what they call a transition tractor.

I have a farmall A with no serial # tag but on the block it says 6342 db? so is it a 1942?

6342DB is the part number of the block.

OK . I have to chime in here. On Farmall, IH ... the casting number ON THE ENGINE BLOCK has nothing to do with the PRODUCTION DATE of the tractor(s) itself. I had the same assumption but the ol boys on "Yesterdays Tractors" and "Red Power" soon set me straight. I was looking to ID my 43/44 T9; one old timer sent me some pics of his Uncle working at one of the foundries for IH producing the bare blocks, in the 40's. I too though of using the engine casting numbers because the military had removed the ID tag and sold it as parts. The guy said his Uncle would start casting one style of block, let just say for the H tractor, the casting date is changed daily. When they were done casting that style of block they would retool for casting a different style of block. As the blocks were cast they were sent to a warehouse for a "minimum" of three months for the castings to cure (who would have thought of that - not me). After which the blocks were drilled, milled and line bored. Now we have to add more time on the end of the block(s) casting date. So on my old T9 the block casting reads 12.4 L which reads Dec. 4th 1943, (memory seals are leaking a little here L might be 44, but you get the idea). So in reality the tractors PRODUCTION DATE is "at the earliest" in March or April of the following year but that is just a general rule of thumb at best. Great subject thanks for posting. thumbs up

I know a few of the later Ms had disc brakes. What was the difference in the Bolster? I know the SMTAs had different boltsters thant the Super Ms

I have a farmall 12-12-p what year is that. I just started to restore it. I took the head off and found a crack in the top of the water jacket between the two center cylinders. Can this be repaired?

1946. You might be better off with a different block.

Was wondering if i could get help reading a serial number off a A i am restoring. The seat was totally tore off so i don't know the actual year. But on the block i found some number . Couldn't tell if the first number was a 3 or 8 but the following numbers where 04200. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It would help if you can find a letter casting. That's the best way to date a Farmall with out a tag. Dads B had a different seat on it but someone took the plate off it and riveted it to the fender. My email is [e-mail] if that will be easier to contact me

All engines except for the cub was an over head valve engine. Some f12s had a flat head wakeusha in them.

W and X in 1952. If it has disc brakes it would be a Super A. Or the casting was off of something else. Some say W can be 1951 as well.
