Good clear video. Worth noting that you are only testing with the small voltage from the meter. When checking for faults to earth ideally use a Megger which generates a higher voltage and will expose faults not shown on a multimeter.

Yea when I went to work at a power plant a long time ago , there was a pump motor that was given problem. That was the time I watched the plant manager a old navy electrician use a megger to test . He found the fault and sent the motor out to be fixed . I bought one of those on e bay for my uses

Great job! But please note those test are basic without a megger. Insulation resistance test or integrity are very critical, hence, can only be achieved by visual inspection and using a megger 🙏🏽….

Apart from continuity and short circuit that the multimeter can measure at 100 per cent, It may be difficult for the meter to detect insulation that has just begun to wear out Yes, Amegger would be needed for the insulation test. Thanks for watching.

The motor should be completely disconnect from supply. Remember when carrying out insulation resistance the Mega ohm meter has 500DC volt that it apply to the winding.

Remember that any time a multimeter is used for continuity testing the device being tested must be deenergized. To test a motor for continuity, first isolate, or disconnect, it from the circuit. Then use the multimeter to check the resistance between phases....thank you

Hey Paul, You can not megger a motor connected to VFD, that voltage can easily rune the drive and that can cost you money to replace. The only best option is to disconnect the motor from the terminal box or from the Drive terminal. I understand also that in such circumstance dealing with large motor like 100s of HP can be a lot of work and also its bad idea opening those terminal periodically. I think the best way is to create a disconnect position, it may not be a good idea but its better than disconnect everything every time you want to megger. Thanks for watching.

A normal low voltage multimeter will not find all the faults that you can find with a Megger, a multimeter is great for testing of winding continuity or opens & dead shorts but that's about it. You really do need a Megger type insulation tester for serious fault finding especially on 3 phase motors. I've been doing Commercial and Industrial fault finding for over 40 years and never go to a fault finding job without an insulation tester.
