Its been a while since I built one, this video and explanation was very good. I have seen it done without installing the cooling fan, for example if you are using a AIO cooler it could get a little awkward, but and big but, better shut it down soon as it posts. CPU gets hot real quick. Obviously with cooling fan is the safe way.

Thanks man. I'm doing my 1st build and wished I'd seen this video before I started putting it together. But you did help me figure out the power issue I was having. My brain was fried after trying to get all these parts installed (11 hrs!). The leads from the case weren't right because the system fired up using the power button on the motherboard just like you said. It still wouldn't post, or at least I can't see anything on my TV. I've been using my big screen and it's HDMI on the HTPC I'm replacing so I figured that would work on the new build but nothing is coming on the screen. Probably something simple. Thanks again for the video. Props. Oh and I liked and subscribed!

thanks for the sub man. i hope you get your problem figured out. hdmi to a tv should work for a post. try taking out all of your RAM except one stick and see if it posts then. also does the motherboard have a read out display on it. if it does what does it say when you turn it on?

Cool guide! Question, if my computer won't post or beep when switched on after build what could be the issue? Fans don't spin either. CPU, 1 RAM and graphics cards are connected and working parts from another pc. The lights on the MB are on to say it's receiving power and everything is plugged in and seeded well. CPU fan is the only one connected into the CPU fan slot.
@HighTechRetrospectV9 жыл бұрын
some motherboards have a little speaker that needs to be hooked up or it wont beep. check that first. if you can, try another RAM stick. or just try putting it in another slot. if your mother board has on board video then plug that in instead of the video card you have installed. other than that i really cant think of anything else to check out. If i knew what cpu/ motherboard you have i might know more but let me know how it goes and i'll try to help you out the best i can.

hey there, i had a question, i have a computer that i built a few years ago, when i tried to turn it on the other day nothing came on the screen, pitch black,it also wont beep,i swapped a known working CPU and nothing happened, i also tried a brand new power supply and nothing happened, im guessing the board is toast correct? its a gigabyte that i installed new back in 2009 and it has served me well, also all thats needed to test the board is the 24 pin connector, the other 4 pin power connector and a CPU right? the hard drive is not needed (even though i do have it installed) what i mean is basically the hard drive is not needed to at least get a screen right? thank you much for any help!!
@HighTechRetrospectV10 жыл бұрын
you need to have the CPU and at least one memory module (RAM stick) installed in order to get the MB to post. you may also need a video card installed if your MB doesnt have onboard graphics. I know these are stupid questions but have you checked to see if there is power coming from the outlet? use a lamp or something to check this. Is the switch on the back of the power supply switched in the right direction? Is it plugged in? those are things i always check first before changing out parts but sometimes people forget about that kind of stuff. let me know how it goes and let me know what MB and CPU you have.
@dntlss10 жыл бұрын
HighTech Retrospect hey thank you much for the fast reply, yeah i have checked all that , the computer will actually turn on, all fans running everything normal, just no screen, right now i have it hooked up exactly how its in your video and im gonna test it that way, now i have used my onboard graphics card before and it worked perfectly but i cant remember if i disabled it in the bios awhile back, is it ok to test the board with my radeon card just in case or do i have to use the onboard card?
@HighTechRetrospectV10 жыл бұрын
dntlss you can test it with the radeon card. have you tried hooking it up to a tv or another monitor
@dntlss10 жыл бұрын
HighTech Retrospect hey, the monitor in question is perfect as i have my little spare dell c521 connected to it, i just tested the motherboard exactly how you tested yours and not a peep, i even removed the battery from the cmos for a few minutes and nothing so im pretty convinced the board is history, its like 6 years old and i did have a water leak in my home that transferred to the carpet under the PC about a year ago, the motherboard didn't get wet per se but maybe the moisture had something to do with it, my best friend built a PC about two weeks ago and he installed a new asus board thats a beauty, i might go along that route,my video card is about two months old so i wanna get a board thats pci express 16 to go with it , i mainly do gaming,not online but by myself, what would you recommended board wise? i have a 700w corsair supply and a barracuda hard drive with 300gigs of memory, im sure i could use a newer processor since i have a amd Athlon which is pretty old however it works perfectly

@HighTechRetrospectV10 жыл бұрын
you have to install a CPU and at least one stick of RAM in order to test the MB. if your MB or CPU doesn't have on board graphics then you will also have to install a graphics card or you wont have anything to hook up to the monitor. I hope this helps and if your using an Intel CPU with integrated graphics on an Intel MB then do exactly what i did in the video or it wont work. thanks for checking out the video and good luck :-)

Hello. In minute 9:50 u said "this is bad dont do that". What would it happen if you do that? will u burn your motherboard? I was wondering that because i want to build my own pc and i am kind of worry that i can make that kind of mistake in my first try. Thanks
@stevo9469 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what would happen, but I wouldn't worry too much about breaking the parts you're installing as long as you take your time and are careful. Here's a few simple things to remember. Don't touch the motherboard when there is power running to it, especially if it is on, besides the power button; wear an anti-static wrist strap or ground yourself by touching something metal frequently; watch lots of tutorials before you start; and read the instructions carefully of any any parts you don't know how to install, like the CPU cooler. It seems scary and complicated at first but the hardest part of building a PC is picking the parts. Assembly is very straightforward if you're following a KZbin video or you get somebody who is experienced to help you.
@syrus2939 жыл бұрын
If you plug in the power and you're still installing parts you have a chance of your system frying parts due to electrical arcing. When doing builds or replacing parts always be sure to have the system unplugged. It will save you money and possibly getting hurt.

This was very helpful even years later, thanks! I suppose people gave you negative ratings due to blowing on the CPU, but other than that i don't understand a downvote here. Again, VERY helpful, i will be testing my motherboard out of the case right now to give it one last chance before I return it...they are out of stock :( I do have 2 questions that maybe someone can answer though... 1.) I thought my motherboard has serious problems last night because every time i turned it on, it flashed a whole sh1tload of error codes very quickly. BUT, when HighTech Retrospect turned on HIS motherboard in this motherboard test video, his ALSO flashed a whole bunch of error codes!!!!! So, am I wrong? Is my board not bad? I am going to test bed this thing and try running stress tests on CPU on the cardboard! 2.) What is a TP cloth??? Tissue paper??? If so, i didnt think that was a good idea... 3.) I did NOT wipe my CPU prior to installing thermal paste. Is that a problem? 4.) I watched a different KZbin video when building my computer. It told me to install power supply, plug power supply into surge protector with the surge protector OFF and the power supply OFF, plug surge protector into wall, and run anti-static strap from screw or stand-off on power supply to keep me constantly grounded. It did NOT say ANYTHING about unplugging from the surge protector or wall before plugging into the motherboard, so I didn't. could this be the source of all my motherboard problems? This was an open box motherboard from a computer store.
