Sorin, your charger has an option for Li-ion 3.8v (i think it's an 8) that should charge the battery to 4.35v. 10:00

Sorin your testing method is 100% correct. M. Dimitris and Roman Vasiliev are also correct. The normal discharge rate for a cell phone in talk mode is probably around 75 milliamps, however the standby mode of phones is probably around 10 milliamps. I think the discharge TEST RATE should be lowered to 100 milliamps but this is probaly not practical as the test would take days. However discharging the fully charged battery at 100 milliamps would probably prove that the manufacturers rating is correct.
@andrewmorton9683
@andrewmorton9683 Жыл бұрын
Is 500 mA a realistic discharge rate? More energy can be extracted from a battery at a lower discharge rate, so perhaps even reputable manufacturers use a lower rate, such as 200 mA, when they test the battery capacity.

Samsung does not hidding that, this is my battery info: Battery capacity 4500 mAh (typical) The typical capacity has been tested under third-party laboratory conditions. The typical capacity is the estimated average considering the deviation in battery capacity among the battery samples tested under the IEC 61960 standard. The rated (minimum) capacity is 4370 mAh. Actual battery life may vary depending on network environment, usage patterns, and other factors.

Hello. I think you should check the discharge rate. When I do a capacity test on a battery, I calculate the battery current / 12 hours. I set the discharge rate to 12 hours. The best way is to get discharge rate information from the manufacturer if possible. Either way, the mobile phone battery is destined to be discharged in 24 hours. Normally, for me, the test should be done with a discharge rate in 12 or even better 24 hours.

When I played with cells capacity testing - I noticed: the higher discharge amps are applied, the less is the capacity. Your typical phone would never suck 0.5Amps all the time (or its uptime would be limited by 6 hours). It drains less current. So, what capacity will you get, if you lower discharge amps to 0.2 Amps? 0.1 Amps? And manufacturer is not lying - they simply measure the capacity with different discharge amps.

Cred si eu ca e adevarat ce zici. Acum mai ramane intrebarea: ce capacitate are bateria daca o descarcam cu 200mah? Cred ca 200 ar fi o cifra care reprezinta realitatea; 100 ar fi mult prea putin
@user735_
@user735_ Жыл бұрын
You're very right. The manufacturer of the battery provides the 'standard discharge current' in the datasheet and that should be used for testing. I'm sure is far less than 500 mA.
@will_doherty

Exactly this - you'd have thought Sorin would know something this basic. Even car batteries are quoted at the "20 hr" rate - which indicates the discharge rate used for comparison purposes from battery to battery.

and one more thing, at what voltage the test ends? the iphone dies around 3.5, you need to double check that and stop the test at that voltage, also the bms is not perfect and lose some mha too...manufacturer say battery capacity without anything after the cell i suppose..

Hi Sir Sorin, I like your way of testing battery capacity. I use the antutu app which has a capacity measurement in a way that you turn on the application and connect the charger and when the mobile phone is fully charged, after that you use the mobile phone. After charging and discharging the device a few times, the application shows the actual capacity. I bought a "new" battery from a local dealer that was worse than the original one in my device. That new battery was at 46% capacity, and the old one at 65%

What you did wrong: the discharge current. The spec is probably lower than 500 mA as the idle current (screen off) of a phone is much lower.

Sorin Nice tools to compare I did ask Apple. Answer is 8 to 10% marching because the can’t make it exactly the same always. The batch can be a little different than a new batch and they always printing the best capacity batch on the battery. So it’s normal also Samsung and more brands do it.

I watched a car battery test video explaining what the actual Ah number means. In short, to get that capacity you need to step down the current output over several discharge cycles.

Li-ion/LiPo batteries have different internal resistance when full than when empty. Then, I concurr with other comenters that lower, 150-300mA discharge current should be used, but between 150mA and 500mA you will not (should not) get more than 10-15% capacity skew (for a good battery).

I think 500mA discharge is too much/unreal. I remember when I had brand new Iphone 11, I had 6hrs long regular call + video recording + video calls and in 12hrs total, I manage to spend only 50% battery. This device is measuring capacity, ok, what about transfer losses? I would like to see result from some reasonable discharge, like 250mA or even 100mA.
@fendysuryanto
@fendysuryanto Жыл бұрын
Agree realistically it should be 250-300 mA at continous discharge, although sometime the phone itself can squeeze as much 500mA or more when the tempererature sensor doesn't reach certain level and thermal throttling start to kicking. So 500mA is still fair enough to test the worst case scenario..

The internal resistance can get you the general health of a (Lithium) battery, if ... if you know the values and tolerances of a healthy and a bad one. The power wall communities have their own 18650 databases, but i know not of one database for battery pouches, because their size is not standardized. And the internal resistance values on the manufacturers datasheet is probably the least wrong one. ;)

I'm pretty sure there is a capacity battery tolerance like there is a hard drive capacity of 1TB but you only can use 950 Gb. Battery health system is not precise you can test for yourself, use a your battery with for example 88% health and plag new battery and after this replug old battery and very often battery doesn't show anymore 88% instead it show 91%. How this is possible i can't explain, so that teach me to don't look battery healt. Battery can be 100% health and be very bad causing restarts/crashing. For me does battery takes 4 hours or 4 hours 25 minutes it is notimportant at all.

But what voltage is the battery designed to be charged to? The batteries always tells what voltage the capacity rating is for. For example samsung batteries usually list capacity when charged to 4.4v If I only charge the battery to 4.2 like most chargers do, I get 3300mah out a 4000mah battery. If i use my bench power supply to charge to the full 4.4 I'll get the extra capacity.

In the battery of iPhone 11 there are 2 connectors, because there is effectively 2 battery connected to the BMS, maybe it's because only one connector was plugged that you have a wrong reading.

Hehe, funny comments about the discharge rate. Yeah, maybe ppl are not wrong about to follow the manufacturer's spec, if it's available. But discharging a 3000mAh battery at 500mA means a 1/6C discharge rate. That's pretty low for a lithium battery. Maybe even less than what you would pull during a gaming. More than standby use, but still not impossibly high. Lead acid batteries are usually rated at 10h or maybe 20h discharge, yes but those batteries have a completely different chemistry...

My only exposure to lipo battery folk lore has been in the toy aero field. When they first came out it was said that capacity increased over the first few charges and that battery life was increased by limiting the charge voltage to 4.1v. 4.4v was a definite no-no! How times change!

Sorin says in this video that the iphone battery pack also contains a battery management chip and I think it is that chip which requires that the pack is fed with a slightly higher voltage than you would expect for a simple cell.
@fendysuryanto
@fendysuryanto Жыл бұрын
@@Hereford1642 IMO that because new material for the electrode that enable higher fully charge voltage, basically with different material it has better volumetric or gravimetric energy density therefore it needs higher voltage to enable squeeze even more energy. Obviously when you need higher voltage then you also need different Battery Management IC..

Battery capacity is normally specified at C/10 or C/20 rate, so a 3000mAh battery should only give you 3000mAh if you discharge at a constant 150mA, if C/20.

Manufactures are not lying, it is your discharge pattern that isn't realistic. NO phone battery last only three hours, that is not an average, realistic use. Never do a liniar high current discharge. The phone battery was NOT build for that use. Your way doesn't give the cells any chance to recover. So make a realistic discharge pattern that is within the manufacturers timeline. Your conclusion is faulty...
