@@TwoWheelRocco so I cleaned the tank, changed petcock, bought and mounted a new battery, filled her up with premium gas. Started with start gas spray and got her running as long as I throttle a little. After a few start ups I didn't need the spray and she started on full choke, but on idle she dies. Watched your other clips about issues so I located the the idle screw(?) and tweaked back and forth just man guessing (it's a swedish term for not actually knowing how to). So it got both better and worse but not so she worked without a little throttle. I have a sportster från 1997 and the petcock doesn't have a vacuum hose, is there something else I can do or another screw to tigthen or loosen up or is it in the carburateur the problem is? Thanks!

There is a black rubber washer that goes between the screen and the petcock. It will leak without that. I always replace that screen along with the petcock. See how brown/yellow that one is? A new one is white. The reserve tube is built into the screen. It's a very cheap part, and they tend to get brittle after a while being always soaked in gas, especially with ethanol gas. I put just a tiny bit of oil, or WD-40 on the tank and petcock threads before putting everything back together. It helps prevent galling of the threads. The petcock is not that expensive, but the tank is. In fact you will likely never find another tank that matches your original. H-D no longer makes new tanks for carbureted models, but even back when they did they cost a fortune. I also completely remove the tank and turn it upside down to pour out any remaining gas. Then I lay it upside down on a soft towel or blanket while working on it. I'm a mechanic at an independent Harley shop. We do better work than most dealers, and charge less for it.

Would it make more sense to just replace the P/C and vac line on a 04' Sportster 1200C with almost 50k miles instead of renting a Vac gauge to test it? The bike starts fine then the idle drops after about 5 min, start to see a little black smoke out the pipes the wants to die a misses when I give it throttle. Always starts and runs fine when cold. Took carb off and cleaned it good. Would the mixture setting cause my symptoms. I never messed with my carb settings except when drilling out the screw cover when new. Bike ran perfect for almost 50k miles without touching the carb. So far I cleaned the carb, replaced coil, plugs and crank position sensor with no luck. I did notice my old plugs were fouled black and chalky even after I cleaned them, so they fouled quick just by idling. Also I just filled my tank up right after I noticed the issue because I was going down the road and it felt like I was running out of gas but still had a half a tank.

@@TwoWheelRocco 1996 xl1200s, i had problems with my bike cutting out at wide open throttle for a couple minutes. i deduced that at WOT, there is no vacuum to open the petcock and fuel bowl ran dry. Yes, I run WOT for extended periods, at least for 90 miles as i need to refuel. If i ride hard, 35 mpg, if i lock throttle at 60mph, i can get 60mpg and that is 180 miles.

As always, wonderful video Rocco. If one decided to go manual petcock, what would you do with the vacuum line? I understand you would plug the carb, but what would go to the VOES? Merry Christmas to you, and blessings
@TwoWheelRocco5 жыл бұрын
I would not go with any after market petcock. From harley the diaphragm and screen for your petcock is very reasonable. Turning gas on and off can be a pain with aftermarket petcock. They are not cheap for a good one. Now if you do chose too, just put a gulf tee in your vacuum hose on the gas tank side. Hope this helps. Let us know how this works out. Have a great Holiday/
@halmorse58795 жыл бұрын
I Changed mine But put the petcock on off Ran the bike till it used up the gas in line and Carb, then I drained the Tank first into a 5 gal container. then changed the Petcock. did have to raise tank and did not spill a drop of fuel....also...I always use a screw clamp on my Fuel Lines on Both ends....that way line stays tight on nipples and Vibrations and bumps while riding will not allow line to slip.

How does your Sportster Run now?
@paulst-pierre91312 жыл бұрын
Hi Rocco Thank you for the Link here. Now do you test with the valve on, off or on reserve??? Thank you Pauly
@TwoWheelRocco2 жыл бұрын
Does not matter, you're testing Petcock Diaphragm for vacuum. your motor produces vacuum that opens the diaphragm and lets the fuel run freely. don't matter, reserve off or on. you're testing the diaphragm for any vacuum leaks if there's a vacuum leak fuel can bypass the diaphragm and work its way into your intake causing a very rich running condition as in too much fuel. Any questions just ask. Hope this helped

converted my stock petcock to non-vac by plugging the vac line off the carb and vac inlet on the petcock, also put the spring in the petcock in front of the diaphragm........it was stalling out at high RPM when vacuum level drops. I've read that this is a common modification, like going to an after market non-vac petcock, just remember to turn it off.

Two Wheel Rocco it’s a 2002 sportster xl1200. The fuel line from the petcock to the carb has some gunk near the fittings so I am going to replace those lines since they are 16 years old now, figured I would do the petcock while I’m there. I see online a lot of people have been replacing the vacuum petcock with a manual and just plugging off the left over vacuum line. I’m assuming the logic behind this is that it’s a simpler mechanism and less can go wrong?

I would replace with new diaphragm kit at dealer for $32 dollars...or so....hope that helps...my reason...when motor is not running no free flowing fuel to carb...That can start other problems...I know you will shut off fuel........Bitch I forgot....cab. flooded garage smells like gas station...Ride safe and have a great day..Let me know how this works out.

Hey Rocco, so I've read through the comments and seen a few people have the same problem as me with spark plugs fouling with soot, and also issues you describe in a video about the bike not running right so it's led me to believe that my pet cock valves is not operating properly. I should also add that the bike was running but not very well, so I followed your video about cleaning the carburettor last week the bike started up and ran for about 2 minutes before the revs increased and then the bike stopped and i have been unable to start it again since. on closer inspection before taking everything to bits my petcock valve does not have a vacuum hose on the back so I followed the vacuum hose from the carburettor back through the engine and it goes to an electrical connection which I believe may be a "v.o.e.s", the bike is a 1989 883 sportster. do you have any advice ? can this switch be bypassed by adding the stock part like you or is this right for my bike to have this switch? i made a short video to make it clear .... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYLZmaimjauHga8 p.s love your content.
