04-06 are the bastard years, first years of rubber mount and last years of carbs... There are only a handful of custom tanks out there for that year range. We currently only have one in that year range that is bolt on directly - www.lowbrowcustoms.com/collections/motorcycle-gas-tanks/products/drag-specialties-diamond-pattern-gas-tank-2004-2006-sportster-xl-models Now mind you a lot of these other tanks can work with your bike but will take some fabrication to mount correctly and reconfigure how to mount your seat.

I like the large capacity tanks like the 4.5 axed tank and idk why nobody likes the offset cap these days but im still a huge fan of the offset fill cap on the right too corner of the axed rank. They are just getting hard to find with the tabs that fit the 90s sportster but 4.5 gallons really is nice to have for long runs. I dont need to full up nearly as much as buddied with the normal smaller sportster tanks. Mine actually came off a different harley and it has a bayonet cap ( but i just ordered a weld in bung to make it screw in ) but i cant remember what one haha i got it back in 2007 haha 😊🤘

As you do standard narrow ans extra narrow have you thought of doing a wider Sportster Tank? Would go well with fat wheeled bikes especially customs with really wide wheels.

I currently own a 2000 HD 1200 sportster with the stock tank and I would like to upgrade to a bigger wider tank so I can do longer rides. Nice! I’ve been sitting on a tank I ordered from you guys a couple months ago. I thinks it’s time to mount. Do you recommend a tank sealer or am I good to go without?

I never run tank sealer... I don't think it is needed, as long as your tank doesn't leak! All of our tanks are pressure tested, BUT it is recommended to pressure test your tank before painting just to be sure. A small pinhole in a weld can lead to paint bubbling from gas vapor making it's way out. Better to be safe than sorry! Also, we DO sell Caswell gas tank sealer which people rave about, so it is personal preference to seal or not seal.

Wait. Do you ride on reserve then switch to on. Or do you ride on on the switch to reserve when you need it. Newbie here just want to be sure

U ride on “On” position and only switch to reserve if you are running low on gas so your engine wouldn’t shut off. Make it a habit to head to the nearest gas station when u r on “reserve” position as their will be no back up to that unless u have a bottle of gas laying around.

Sorry ya Tyler misspoke here and got the two mixed up. You want to ride with ON position and then when you are running out switch to reserve. He does these videos off the cuff and sometimes mistakes happen! sorry about that! We made an editor note in the description calling it out too!

How about adding a fuel guage to a 2006 1200xlc sportster. Everyone tells me its not possible and to use trip odometer. But I found a sight Guage on a forum but in order to install it I have to weld onto my gas tank. Is there any other way of installing a fuel guage

82-2004 not 86?

86-03 is Evo sportster years before rubber mount frame. 2004 starts rubber mount frames and has completely different way the gas tanks mount. 82-85 were still Ironhead motors and different frame.
