How to test and replace the alternator on an 06-10 Hyundai Santa Fe/ Kia Sorento 3.3 v6

In this video I show how to test the battery and how to test and replace the alternator on an 06-10 Hyundai Santa Fe/ Kia 3.3 v6. I have the alternator wiring diagram included also. This should be the same for 06-10 Santa Fe's, 06-08 Azera's, 05-05 Sonata's, 07-09 Kia Opirus', and 05-09 Kia Sorento's

Yes, a lot of the codes were generated from low-voltage so I cleared them and the check engine light stayed off

I understand about getting "this lady" back on the road (i am assuming you are talking about the customer and not calling the vehicle a lady) but the obvious (or should be obvious) issue here is that you are installing a brand new alternator only to be ruined by the leaking valve cover gasket? Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Tell your customer that she has to bring you her car back to you next weekend to repair the real issue or that she will pay double when this new alternator becomes useless like the other one you just replaced. Other than that, thank you for the detailed procedure it was very helpful. A pain is the ass but very helpful. Excellent

That valve cover leak and alternator were subject to a recall notice - Hyundai “fixed” mine for free ( but their customer service is awful). Looks like I’ll be replacing my alternator for the third time on my 79k mile 07 Santa Fe

@@danwilliams3579 my 08 is going in the shop in 2 to 4 weeks because of backorder on alternators (in Ontario Canada anyways)..the dealer will address the alternator,valve gasket and there new and improved 😉 fix of putting a plastic cover over the alternator to let the oil drip over the alternator and down the block..🙄..

It took about 3 hours start to finish, it would probably be a great time to replace the serpentine belt and change the coolant since the lower hose is easy to get to when doing this job, thanks for watching

Thank you, I'm currently trying to diagnose a problem with the charging system - the alternator wasn't working when I got the vehicle but after charging the battery it started working, I'm guessing the replacement alternator it got was sensitive to low battery voltage but I'll leave it for now. I'll just try to find the parasitic draw for now as it was pretty substantial (75mA). Thanks for showing the process, was a little worried taking things apart as I don't have too much spare time to figure things out (or maybe I'm just too worried about not knowing the job 🤷‍♂).

I would, I use the clear plastic funnel system that has adapters that fit onto the top of your radiator or cooling bottle

Testing is key, do you have 12v going into the alt & 13-14 volts coming out, is the alt case ground good, it's probably a computer controlled alt and you need to know how it's controlled by the ecm

When you started the car up, I noticed you could hear a strange sound, I think coming from the belt? It was only for a few seconds and then the car went back to sounding normal, any ideas as to what that is? It was from 1:16 to 1:18. I have a 2010 Santa Fe and mine does the same thing

I listened to it 3 times and can't pinpoint it, It sounds like an exhaust shield is banging around at high idle, that one would take 2 people- 1 to start it and another one to listen to figure out I think

It is probably timing chain rattle. There is an issue where the timing chain tensioner is faulty and you hear rattle until the tensioner builds up hydraulic pressure. It usually lasts 2-5sec. It's an expensive fix as it's under the timing chain cover.

My friend just did one on my sister in laws 2010 and it was easier to remove the front passenger wheel and liner. Then he removed the lower radiator hose.

Would you know why a brand new alternator wouldn’t hold a charge? I have the exact same male and model put in the new alternator but it won’t charge the battery

You'd have to make sure the ecm is turning it on, make sure the alternator has a good block ground, and test the voltage coming out of the alternator, if all of that is good then you most likely have a bad new alternator, you could also take the new unit to a parts store and have them test it

Yeah I had the wrong alternator. The 3.3L Hyundai requires a alternator with a 2 prong connection cable on it where most cars you’d find tutorials on have 3 i accidentally had a alternator with the 3 prong connector and that’s why my battery wouldn’t hold a charge

I too out the drivers side 1st and then slid the passenger side fan over to the drivers side and pulled it out

No, you only have to release the tension on it to get the belt off of the alternator

@@jessiefromteamrocket6444 you probably need to put a ratchet on the tensioner with the ratchet handle towards the front of the car and then start pushing the ratchet handle towards the back of the car and then put a piece of pipe over the ratchet handle for leverage, then take the belt off of the smooth pulley (not a grooved pulley) since there is no lip on the smooth pulley. This also help when reinstalling the belt on the smooth pulley, because it seems like they give you just enough room for the belt to fit. What area of the country are you in? If you're close to Lake county Illinois I'll give you a hand

Please follow up with your client and let her know there’s a recall for this. She needs to go to Hyundai and let them put her a new oil gasket on and check to make sure her new alternator is in good condition as well as try to get some money back for the repair she had with you.

I have an 09 & struggle with getting the fans out only to realize that it was a hook bolted to the driver side fan holding the lower radiator hose & this also made me realize to never buy another Hyundai
