Had one of these today on a 97 Thunderbird. Came in with some EGR codes, low power, and a wicked noise. Found one of the EGR DPFE hoses missing. Replaced it and retested. Had a similar noise but not as loud. The small diameter EGR pipe fitting was broken from the EGR pipe and the EGR valve was wicked hot. At this point I hooked up my pressure gauge to the EGR DPFE hose to check the exhaust backpressure. My pressure gauge literally shot off the car when I started it. At this point I removed the O2 sensors and used a borescope to find one catalytic converter completely melted inside.

I would like to add some information with respect to backpressure testing. Infact it would be helpful to distinguish between psia (absolute) and psig (gauge) whenever we talk of pressure. What these pressure gauges show is actually psig, it means its the pressure above atmospheric pressure. If the backpressure is 2 psi (infact 2 psig) then it is equal to 14.7psi+2psig = 16.7psia. If we don't specify psig or psia, then it can be confusing because 2 psia is vacuum and 2 psig is positive pressure.

great videos, i just bought this same gauge on amazon, but it says vacuum/fuel pressure gauge...it has 0-30 psi for vacuum and 0-10psi for fuel( the part you were just using to monitor the dpfe was the fuel side)....my question is why did it not go on the vacuum side of the gauge? why did it use the fuel pressure side that is ment for carburetors? thanks ive been watching other back flow videos using the same gauge and everytime it always showed readings on the vacuum side of gauge...

+ScannerDanner Hey quick question, is there anyway to check the back pressure without the DPFE valve?
@SteveRobReviews9 жыл бұрын
Nice 👍 Paul the swing on that needle at idle going up an down, I had a Silverado last week doing the same thing on a fuel pressure gauge, well I thought the gauge might be chooched so I hooked up another one and same thing , would swing from 45-55 psi at idle. Took me a while but I remembered a question I asked you years ago about how could the fuel boil in the rail , well I let the truck cool down and the gauge was steady as a rock at 52 psi. Never seen this before but it was real hot out and the truck was real hot too. Thanks.....

Steve Rob Was there a fix for this issue or just a side note for data that may have distracted you from the real goal?
@SteveRobReviews9 жыл бұрын
Customer concern- rough idle only , runs great otherwise. No CEL , no out of range data pids. Plugs and wires recently changes. I smoked the engine no leaks. I cleaned the injectors thru the rail with a pressure canister- no change. Put fuel gauge on and got erratic needle swing. Let sit 1 hour and needle was now steady to do a injector balance test- each dropped to 42 psi. After all this I get a pair of pliers and pinch the pcv line and the engine smooths out . Two things noticed the pcv did make a high pitched rattling sound and it was a 2057 , wrong pcv only good for up to 2000 trucks - this truck was a 2002. All fixed now and runs great. BTW I did hear the high pitched rattle from the start but it sounded like it was coming from the hydro boost. I wish in hindsight I scoped the pump wave form during the erratic gauge readings but it was super hot out so I decided it was Miller time instead :)

Hi scannerdanner. Love your videos. Need some advice please. I've got a vauxhall zafira b 1.6 petrol 2008. I've got p0171 lean code. No vacuum leaks, done smoke test. Checked all fuel system, perfect. Changed stuck open evap purge valve. No exhaust leaks. Both 02 sensors perfect. Change electronic accelerator pedal and new throttle body. Changes intake air temperature sensor. I changed the cat converter about a year ago. Changed map sensor because scan tool was reading 7.5in hg at idle. Done vacuum test. Getting 22 in hg. Done snap throttle test, goes down then up to 25 and quickly settles at 22 in hg again in the green area. With steady acceleration goes to 25in hg. Dont know if this is normal. This problem started 3 months ago when I replaced a stuck open thermostat. Changed the egr valve. Had several machanics look at it. They just took the money and left. All parts I replace were genuine parts from vauxhall. I've ran out of ideas. Please help 😭

Without DPFE you'd have to make your own O2 sensor bung to vacuum port adapter right? That would probably get really hot really quick. I know I've seen you cover that in another video somewhere. It could be helpful to link to that video from this one to extend to people who do not have a DPFE. It's certainly not easy to access and tee into most EGR's. What do you think about using a temp gun to measure before/after cat?
@ScannerDanner9 жыл бұрын
***** It would but I've done it and it works. I take an old O2 and punch it out and saw off the ends, then adapt my gauge to it. Did you mean this one? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpLJp2WZaditkLs A temp gun to find a restricted cat? I've never tried it and I do not think it would be a 100% accurate test like this one.
@DENicholsAutoBravado9 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner I've heard of the tests and tried the tests with a temp gauge to verify good or bad catalytic converters. Scanner data works so much better. Nothing I did with a temperature gauge on my old or new cat actually matched any prescribed tests.

master tech cody It ran to the passenger side exhaust manifold on this particular truck. It provides exhaust gas for the EGR system and the DPFE sensor is used to monitor flow.

under load backpressure measurements are completely different than this test. Think about how much throttle opening it actually takes to run an engine at 3000 RPM in park (it's not much). Compared to a WOT run at redline. Huge difference
