Thanks for the video about this. I had not checked the relay and was looking at a fuel pump replacement. Sadly, the relay checked out OK and I am still looking at a pump replacement,. Even so, knowing the relay will not turn out to be the culprit after the pump is replaced is worth a lot. Thanks again.

get a new fuel pump online for as low as $20 at carparts.com, or rockauto.com Alternatively, if you do not have an access door,you do not need to drop your tank. You can make your own access door with a hammer and chisel, grinder, nibbler, saws all, etc., but first look at some videos on how to do it safely kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2qpla2bd7WhpMk and kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYCyfZiprs6JhMU and kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3_RY355eNeJisk

Dave Nevotti There are 2 relays that control the fuel pump. On my 98 Taurus it was the 2 on the top right side looking from the front of the car. you might also try to jump start the car, as more current will sometimes start it. If it does start with a jump, then your fuel pump needs to be changed.

Thanks for the video. I was going to swap relays in a 2001 Ford Taurus - and I thought I tried once to take out the Fuel Pump relay. I broke a plastic tab. After seeing your video I got more brave because you seemed to just grab it from the sides and pulled it right out. So I did too. Tested it with Bench 12v Power Supply just like you showed and it clicks and gives good continuity between the right other 2 pins. Still don't know why car won't start sometimes ... but now beginning to suspect fuel pump ... or connections on the actual fuel pump. Seems to favor having more gas in the tank. For awhile it had trouble at 1/4 tank. Now it seems to have trouble at or below 1/2 tank. Used to just leave me stuck somewhere - spitting and sputtering and not starting, to start 1/2 hour later. To now sometimes not starting on Cold Start after being parked all night long. I hate the prospect of paying over $400 for the mechanic shop to drop the tank and fix it by fixing connections or replacing the pump.
@MrDidrill10 жыл бұрын
Alan Spicer Sounds like the fuel pump just go weaker and weaker. When it starts after a 1/2 hour it is your fuel pump armature cooling off and contracting enough to make a connection again. When it does not start when it is cold, sometimes a battery jump will give it enough extra electric juice to kick the fuel pump on. Sounds like a new fuel pump is over due. I got one for my 98 taurus for $10 at @qzq9stz an changed it out myself. You need to take the gas tank off to change it.
@MrDidrill10 жыл бұрын
Alan Spicer I'll try that link again. if it does not work this time, it is in the next comment down below this one@qzq9stz

I am working on a '98 Taurus wagon. I have found the relay to be good and there is power going to it. I have removed the fuel filter and turned the ignition key and there is no fuel being pumped. Is it safe is call the fuel pump bad so I don't drop the tank for nothing? Fuel inertia switch is pressed in.
@MrDidrill5 жыл бұрын
Instead of dropping the fuel tank, you might want to cut an access hole in the floor board above the pump. That is much easier, and quicker. There are several videos on youtube, about ways to do that, but if you can;t find one, I would be glad to link to a few if you wish.

Edward Quintana Than would be nice, but it does not exist. If you decide to do it yourself and save $300-$400, you can buy a new fuel pump cheap at the following online parts store. I bought one for a 1998 Taurus for under $11 and with shipping only paid less than $17 using the following link tinyurl.com/qzq9stz - Good luck

Hi Mr DiDrill, okay. I am going to try to test it again after watching the video again. I cannot find a spot on fuel rail to test psi. It is a 2003 Explorer Sport XLT 4.0 SOHC built 12/02 I do not know if it has fuel psi regulator or if that is in pump/tank. Any help on how to test fuse block as a whole both inside and out would be great. Also, I want to try to check grounds. But I cannot find how they run through to back. I also do not think trailer light attachment has power/ground not sure which but I couldnt get test light to light. So I was thinking a short or not grounded or broken wire? Thanks so much

Thanks for the video it helped!! :) I tested my fuel pump relay the same was as you did in the video. Of course I get the click meaning the relay is working. But when I tested the ohms from pin 3 to 5 I got 0.00. I tried it several times to see if I would get 0.01 or any other reading. Does that still mean its good? I am testing a fuel pump relay on a 99 Ford Ranger. The relay's are identical.

My car doesnt have a box like that under the hood. the relays are mounted on the side next to the battery. And I can't simply pull it out like that. They are connected to a bunch of wires. What do I do? I don't even know if the fuel relay is the reason why my car doesn't start and I have no way of knowing. It's driving me crazy.
@MrDidrill7 жыл бұрын
What is the make and year of your car? The video is of a Ford.
@doulikepie27 жыл бұрын
It's a '93 Plymouth Grand Voyager LE. There is no fuse box under the hood, but it's underneath the steering wheel.
@MrDidrill7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct about there not being a box under the hood, however where the fuses are wired in, the replacement fuse seems to detach from the top portion by clips. If you look at a picture of the fuse, you will see. If the following link does not work for you, then go to the autozone web site, and you can find a picture of it there. Here is a link the autozone replacement fuel pump relay. www.autozone.com/electrical-and-lighting/relay-fuel-pump/plymouth/grand-voyager-2wd/1993/6-cylinders-3-3-0l-mfi-sohc

Thanks a bunch, but I don't have any way of knowing which one is the the fuel relay. The repair manual I have only gives general information on them and diagrams I have looked up give the wrong image. Or it simply doesn't show everything I need to see.
@MrDidrill7 жыл бұрын
There should be 5 relays, and the fuel pump relay is the 4th one from the firewall, as seen in the following diagram. www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/12900_fp_29.jpg I just put "1993 plymouth voyager relay location" into the Yahoo search box, and went down a few results, to the image results.

@MrDidrill Жыл бұрын
If it does not shut off it is probably not pumping anything, as the fuel pump pressure is what turns it off.
