How to test your alternator with a multi meter for functionality / shorts / damage

I've got a 370 and on occasion (usually on rainy nights) the following day when I start the vehicle it has a no charge situation. Usually starting to charge after about 45 seconds to a minute, almost as if it is building resistance or drying something out. Would I need to test the alternator in this case or could this be related to a dirty ground?
