Battery store will test for free to confirm that it is bad….

1. 12.2 is normal in the morning depending on weather, cold area drop to about plus/minus 12v 2. You should have a charger to verified the battery and also maintain if not use 3. Check for voltage drains, ie dirty posts or bad cable(s) 4. Age of the battery

tad misleading. Unless you have left the battery unused for a minimum of 15 minutes, ideally longer, and is at a suitable temperature it will give you a very misleading voltage. A bad battery can present a good voltage, but not provide a suitable burst current to start a car. A battery in the cold will not work quite as well as one in room temperature, so bringing the battery in to the warm allows the battery to work significantly better, remember a battery is just a chemical reaction in a box and temperature is a reaction catalyst, it can speed up or slow down the reaction. So bringing the battery in to the warm without charging it will usually provide a higher nominal voltage without a load. With this in mind, 80% of bad batteries are discovered in winter because thats when they are unable to provide the current needed, while the summer time the heat has given the battery enough help to keep that chemical reaction going enough for you to start the car, the alternator taking over. Warm climates therefore dont require nearly as much battery as you do in colder climates - a big car could start quite happily on a small motor bike battery while a small engine in the arctic might need a much bigger battery than you would at home.

Yes, 14v is normal when the car is running as it indicates the alternator is charging.
