In addition to testing your charger's voltage, you also need to test its current (amps). It's entirely possible for a charger, or any electrical device, to be putting out proper voltage, but little to no current. Testing for current is an entirely different animal than testing for voltage.

VERY IMPORTANT - just incase they want to check other chargers you should tell them about the little symbol on the back of the adaptor that shows if the possitive (+) is in fact the center! Some are reversed (+ on the outside). Things can seriously fry if you're not sure. I think you are safe using the meter though? Thanks for the video.

@@PC_Monkey A Samsung Chromebook worked faithfully until it suddenly did not. I tried to take a step by step approach. Absolutely nothing shows up when I try to turn the Chromebook on. thanks to your video...was able to fix my machine from not charging! I never thought it could be the AC Adapter that was the problem. Before looking at that, I replaced the internal battery, which for a long time was drained - I would get a startup warning msg, but I just ignored it. Then one day it didn't work anymore..... the new battery wouldn't charge - but it did power up the machine until it ran to zero. Thought maybe I got a dud and was going to exchange/return it. Then I saw your video. I tested my old/original power adapter and it shows 19.5V stable on the multi-meter...but I had already ordered a $12 replacement adapter on Amazon. Thought, what the heck - I'll try it anyway.....and it worked! Yet, the old/original adapter does not - even though it tests at 19.5V. Not sure what the deal is....

DCV stands for DC voltage. It is the same thing. The main thing to distinguish is that you are measuring voltage (V) not current (A). This often involves both a dial setting (as was shown in the video) and proper placement of the probes (if you look in the video you'll see that the black probe is in COM - common or on some multimeters it will be GND for ground; the red probe goes into V NOT A).

The wire end near the connector can be worn inside but still show voltage plug in the computer and wiggle if you see the light go off or flicker at the same time you bend the end right near the 90 degree plug end that is your issue you can repair solder but if your really desperate sometimes a bit of cable surgery and an alligator clip or even a paperclip can make the repair if your not worried about a fire but it is low voltage DC. If there is poor connect some laptops will flash the charge lights or just shut off, if you enter safe mode or the bios startup mode F1 F2 etc then you can charge without drivers installed or with duplicated or corrupt drivers that the short might have triggered a reset or duplication of or some other internal protection circuitry etc. So it might only be able to charge in this mode until properly repaired by reseting the bios or getting a new charger battery or both but try a different charger at the computer shop first the battery and charger are pretty cheap. I have even spliced a different charger with the same approximate voltage and it works fine for a fair period if it heats up there is too much load maybe not Enuf watts etc bigger is better if you charge 4 cell phones in your USB etc or any extra loads. If it runs without battery and doesn't short u can leave the battery out as charging the battery is the biggest load usually. So unplug any USB loads and the battery plug in charger but leave computer off or in bios boot mode before the drivers load then use a USB load to verify power stays on like a cell phone that dings when it charges if it dings on you. Have a solid charge connection if it keeps flicking on and off you have a poor connection or very corrupted drivers. Delete all drivers and their duplicates From device manager before rebooting past bios start or safe mode if no flickering then it's software related if flickering still. You have a bad connection somewhere check external. First but could be pin in or internal. If it charges off fine then you can only run until the battery dies as the battery power is a different source location but tees in somewhere inside. But it works half the time lol. The charge onky load is less than when running with charge and USB load total a weak Or low output smaller charge cable might still have Enuf juice to run without battery and without major USB loads you can properly splice in a larger charge cord of simular voltage with more watt output on most laptops if the internals do not accept it can. Still charge the battery when turned off. The battery lights usually will turn Color when charged do not overcharge unless you enjoy a good fire always check. For heat at battery and at charger warm is ok but hot is troubke heat indicates load or excessive load like an internal battery short always test in a safe place. Do not. Leave unattended unless 100 percent safe from fire. Solder it up properly using heat shielding or cold solder techniques with proper fire rated insulation etc. If you. Short circuit the charger it can be destroyed quickly with open circuit wires inside the box usually. Not repairable. Get another and test continuity and polarity before plugging it in. Do not reverse polarity usually the pin is positive and the outside wire and outside pin. Are negative DC remeber AC is converted by the charge coil and any electronics inside the charger cable box. Sime even have an led showing DC power out but the connector end can still have an incomplete circuit to the computer or battery charging system. So the volt test is not always accurate but a good start. Enjoy all and be safe

You didn't check the amps. Should you be checking amps?
@ericwhudson4 жыл бұрын
Can't really check current. These are voltage controlled power supplies. That is, they supply a constant voltage. When you put a load on them (e.g plug it into the computer) then the supply will need to send out current in order to keep the voltage where it wants to be. If you tried to measure the current just of the power supply you'd be "shorting it" (attaching the +19V signal to ground through your multimeter) and you'd likely end up damaging the supply. DO NOT MEASURE CURRENT from a constant voltage power supply (pretty much any standard power supply). It is a similar effect to attaching a wire from one end of a battery to the other - you'll just end up draining your battery. Except for a power supply, depending on its design, you have a risk of completely frying it.
@olo-burrows3 жыл бұрын
True. It could put out 19 Volts just fine for the meter with no load, but when plugged into the laptop a bad capacitor in the power brick could cause excessive a.c. ripple that upsets the computer. Or the power brick simply can't put out the full 4.74 Amps any more for whatever reason. If you can borrow the same kind from a friend to test that would be one test to make.

Here I have a Dell laptop that shows an error - it does not recognize the AC adapter and, accordingly, does not charge the battery. Otherwise, with this charger the laptop works - it loads Windows, the applications open. On the back of the power adapter it says that the output has 19.5 V and 3.34 A. The charger voltage test shows 19.75 V, but the current test shows 0.57 A. Isn't this charger damaged?

in my case, I tested it the way you did and I got 19 vdc but when I inserted it to my desktop, it didn't work and when I tested it, there's no power. I unplugged it and discharged the output terminals and turn on again, there was 19vdc again. I repeated the process and the result is repeatable. there is something that tripped in the charger every time I use it in my desktop but, it works on my laptop. it seems that there is something in my desktop that trips my charger off

1. For a computer that does not turn on, try this video first; kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYClimehZ7Khlc0. Let me know how that goes :) 2. Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?

My adapter has a stripped cord at the junction where the rubber 'ribbed' part of the cord about an inch and a half before the insertion point. This seems to be a regular place for the failure on my computers. Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid this and have you made/do you plan to make a video to show how to fix such an issue? Is it even worth trying to do so?
@PC_Monkey2 жыл бұрын
I would replace it rather than try to fix it. With power to the computer, your always better off safe than sorry. Best way to not let cords end up like that is to have little to no stress on it.

Hi. I know this video is old, but I need to test a laptop adapter that has a rating of 19V and 12.5A (it's a big Dell Alienware). The Multimeter I have is only rated for 10A max My question is, if the meter is set to measure voltage, and the leads are plugged into the voltage socket... do I still need to worry about the amperage? -- don't want to blow up my meter, or anything else 😅
@PC_Monkey Жыл бұрын
Usually Amps are not a huge deal. As long as the Amps are at least what the computer is calling for. It will pull the Voltage as needed :)
@thrivingbranch Жыл бұрын
@@PC_Monkey thanks for replying. So I should be good as long as I am only measuring voltage on the voltage input of the meter, even if the AC adapter of the laptop has a higher amp output than the multimeter supports, right? I haven’t really used a multimeter before, and know next to nothing about electricity, so this is all new for me. Thanks for answering my stupid questions.

Hi PC Monkey. My ASUS Laptop will not turn on with or without the battery connected. The ASUS Laptop states 19V & 3.42A and the non-genuine power adapter, that was given to me with the laptop, states 19V & 4.74A (Is this difference a problem?). I have tested the power cable as you have shown in the video & I get upto about 19.6V. Is the Amps important? I tried to test the Amps and (assuming correctly tested) initially received around 2.6A now I'm only getting around 0.6A. Do you think this makes my problem the power cable?

Is it necessary to remove the battery for discharging the static ?

The testing worked perfectly. However, I jammed the red prong in too deeply and this bent the internal prong. Then it would not go back into the laptop. Almost ruined my power supply. You may want to warn viewers about this.

I would test the charger as seen here to confirm its healthy. It also may be your power jack, as it needs to be at a certain angle. The jack could be damaged. If the charger is heating up severely, however, I would guess it needs to be replaced. Do you use your computer with a surge protector? You should.
